The series might have ended decades ago, but it will always live on in our hearts. One of the greatest shows ever made. RIP Paul Eddington, Nigel Hawthorne and Derek Folds. Thank you for bringing us so much joy
Hear, hear.
It’s story lines are still incredibly (sadly) current!
Aw man, Derek Fowlds is dead? Sorry to learn that.
@@DodderingOldMan he died in 2020 all the best are gone
@@DodderingOldMan Believe it or not, 3 years ago.
As a retired civil servant, I found this programme particularly entertaining especially as it was much closer to reality than many might think.
The saddest part of watching these brilliant programs is that nothing has changed except that politicians are even more inept and the bureaucrats do not have Sir Humphrey’s skills. Nobody writes like this anymore.
Sad
What super shows they were
40 odd years later, practically everything in this series is still relevant. One of those rare moments where writing, acting, direction and chemistry come together perfectly. My favourite sitcom. Thank you to all who made this possible.
The scary thing is - it was relevant and accurate at the time - but even more so at the present time where politicians and civil servents are even more full of shit than they was then
Blame the civil service for it for stalling for years
Sad that, around 35 years on, this show remains almost as topical and devastatingly accurate as it was when first broadcast.
That's because many of the stories are actually true.
This show gets as close to perfection as any show, I have ever seen.
Casting 10/10
Writing 10/10
Acting 10/10
Directing, spot on
Producing, spot on
38 Episodes in total, nowhere near enough.
That isn't close, it is perfection
As a Civil Servant (then) I could see that the reseachers had done a great job. It was so true to life. I watch it now, after many years away from the Civil Service, and it is just as true today as it was then. It has been uncanny, watching the repeats in 2024, how episodes are broadcsat at a time which reflect actual activity in the country today. RIP those great actors (and no doubt the writers now as well)
For decades I have wished that I had the expertise to speak the English language as did Sir Humphry!
I used to think there could be a special after Paul Eddington died, with Sir Humphrey and Bernard meeting at or after the funeral of the PM, with shenanigans and skullduggery to follow, of course!
Though all three of these wonderful actors are now gone, at least we can still enjoy their work and the great scripts which made this such a terrific show.
‘Honesty always gives you the advantage of surprise in the House of Commons’. And indeed of many legislatures!
Two things stand the test of time.
1. This series.
2. Everybody commenting “this series is as true today as it was all those years ago…”
And probably you comment too
Beautifully written, beautifully acted, the best of the best! And as relevant today in so many ways, even though life, politics and the Civil Service have all changed....
This is my go-to tonic when I need cheering up.
Politics & the civil service may have changed in some ways, but in others they have stayed the same. Many current political incidents can be explained by this programme which was made 40 years ago.
I feel such warmth and affection for the three of them. Thank you Paul, Derek, and Nigel ❤❤❤
My favourite comedy show. I watch these regularly, on repeat, they never get old. Masterclass in acting and comedy.
"Epistemological?!? What are you talking about???" HILARIOUS!!! 😂😂😂😂
The ability to be truthful unless it impacts ones career or reputation is superb comedy, a great piece 😬
One of the best written and acted shows of all time
Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister was one of the funniest shows I've seen, Being a politics guy I immediately was glued to the show
You might check out "The new statesman" as well! Late Rick Mayal just brilliant!
@@Beautiful_Redesign
I just started watching, It's hilarious. Thanks for the recommendation.
@@Beautiful_Redesign Also 'The Distinguished Gentleman", an Eddie Murphy comedy taking a slightly different angle on US political corruption, directed by the same Jonathan Lynn who co-wrote Yes, Minister.
@@TheRip72 thanks for recommending. I don't really like Eddie's acting, he's not funny to me. I'm hopelessly devoted to Brit actors, acting, humor, Tv, film, everything lol
Pure brilliance decades later, great actors ,the best writers ever
Capturing the bitter essence of modern politics and adding a sweet layer of comedy to make it palatable.
One of the greatest tv series ever 🇬🇧
I thought Sir Humphrey was annoying at first, Then I saw the genius in his character
Likewise. I felt the same way about the even more stuffy Sir Arnold, but I have grown to love every one of his scenes. John Nettleton is one of the last surviving cast members too.
I believe the writers were often fed stories from WH insiders, some of which were so outlandish even they dared not write them into the script as virtually nobody would have believed them back then.
Today of course, given what has transpired over the past forty odd years we’d be only too willing to believe it was all true, however totally fucking crazy the story line was. It’s not so much that the truth is stranger than fiction these days, it’s more that the truth has become indistinguishable from the fiction and quite bland by comparison.
It gets to be like that when crazy conspiracy theories one after another keep turning out to be true.
He did those monologues on first takes almost all the time. Him memory for remembering those lines are almost genius.
I saw it as a kid and even now it's as fresh as morning tea!!
We could all join them at any given moment.
in death or in the government?
Honestly, the series was both informative and entertaining.
Wonderful cast, wonderful script.
I just find myself wanting to go over the scenes again and again.
Someone else said this, and I completely agree, this is a documentary, not just a comedy. Genius.🌄
Still the best ever documentary about British politics 😁
Best public money ever spent was in the production of this series.
It was off the record!
IT WAS ON THE TAPE!
Iconic dialogue 🧠🤍🇬🇧🇩🇪🇺🇸
Absolutely wonderful 😂👍😂
The most brilliant series ever....anywhere!
I have never appreciated the beauty of the
English language more! And how prophetic
in the episode about Sir Humphrey ‘s
explanation about why he was in favour
of Great Britain joining the EU!
O
Sir Humphrey was against the EU ("Sir Humphrey: It could be argued that given the absurdity of the whole European idea that Brussels is doing it’s best to defend the indefensible and to make the unworkable work."), I believe the episode you're referring to is about the European Identity Card, and he was only in favour as it would make things easier administratively speaking.
This is the perfect ending for the series: The Rt. Hon. James Hacker has become an impersonation of Sir Humphrey, but now on the most exalted stage in the United Kingdom.
I trust I made myself obscure. [Sir Thomas More according to a Man for all Seasons
This was a wonderful comedy classic all of them fantastic actor's who are sadly missed a masterpiece in every way GREAT, WONDERFUL, BRILLIANT.
Why do you believe that apostrophes play a part in plurals?
One thing in this show is very important and relevant. Government bureaucrats staying in background have the same attitude across the world and they are always winners with good perks and secure jobs. It is the politicians who come and go and bear the brunt.
Sir Humphrey should know that an interesting interview can only be a bomb.
Superb show, well observed and beautifully acted.
The most unusual aspect of this fantastic series is that if anything it got better over time, the opposite of almost every other show. A class act, outstanding humour that is something the British do better than anyone.
It still, to me, seems to sit in a grey area between satire and documentary.
Brilliant in any case.
Sheer genius.
Great cameo by Ludovic Kennedy.
" I always handle Ludo rather well"
Still remains one of my favorite series ❤️
Aging like fine wine
Comedy genius
Yes Prime Minister morphs in to the Thick of It and the comedy continues!
Brilliant Satire on how Government, and the World, really works. The writing and characters are superb.
Absolutely superb.
My favourite comedy of all time.
Brilliant show and cast
"you lied ... I know this is a difficult concept to get across to a politician."
it has always been like this and it will be forever be like this.
And there will always be media spreading politicians' words and there will always be countless fools believing politicians and their media.
Wicked old Humpy. Got his just deserts.
It is ever true then as today across the pond in America.
The best political stair show ever great writing great acting and best of all it is still relevant after 40 plus years God bless them all
Interesting that Trident missile test failed recently and the only previous test firing in 2016 it failed too.
I still think of the episode they were talking about Trident and Bernard said IF IT WORKS
I suppose we should feel lucky that there wasn't an enormous new bunker on Sandwich golf course!
Could have been filmed this evening…..l🤷🏼♂️🙄🤔

Actually Sir Humphrey telling the PM he lied was also laying upon the English language an error. To be a lie the speaker must know it was untrue. So while Hacker did not tell the truth, and indeed misled Parliament, he did not tell a lie as he thought it was the truth.
But he lied by claiming he knew it wasn't true when he didn't actually know if it wasn't true, he even admits his logic was "why would we be doing it?". The funny thing is Hacker did indeed lie (and knew he lied) earlier when he asked his opponent to refer to a speech that didn't exist.
@@MrSniperfox29 He thought it was true, therefore it wasn’t a lie. Look up the definition of ‘lie’. To be a lie you have to know (or be reckless as to the truth), and often definitions include a malicious or bad motive for telling the untruth.
Edit Most definitions require intent to deceive for an untruth to be a lie.
@@brontewcat He lied when he made a statement claiming to know something he didn't actually know about.
He even then lied to Humphrey when he said it was an honest answer because he then had to admit he didn't actually know they were doing it, so it wasn't honest it was just him speculating because he saw no reason to do it.
Edit - The fun part of this all is, he claims he would never "knowingly mislead parliament" after doing exactly that multiple times in his previous statements (I have seen no evidence, haven't looked, they haven't told me about fiddling figures, because he never asked etc)
Did you go to a Jesuit school?
you told a lie - brilliant
Maybe he hasn't heard, you live in abject poverty, on eighty one thousand pounds a year....😁
Beyond brilliant. Beyond masterful. Only the true documentary "Rats in the Ranks" outshines it as Rats is reality and Yes Minister is a comedy, all be it, written by a couple of ex public servants.
Watching Yes, PM should be mandatory for all children 16 years old.
Me, I was a bit younger when I saw it, and I thought it was a weekly documentary.
3.15 😀😃😄Epistemology, the philosophical study of the nature, origin, and limits of human knowledge. The term is derived from the Greek epistēmē (“knowledge”) and logos (“reason”), and accordingly the field is sometimes referred to as the theory of knowledge. Epistemology has a long history within Western philosophy, beginning with the ancient Greeks and continuing to the present. Along with metaphysics, logic, and ethics, it is one of the four main branches of philosophy, and nearly every great philosopher has contributed to it.
I'd far rather have these people in government than any of the ne'r do wells we've got at present (2012 - 23). At least they understand the concept of 'public service'.
Fiddle the figures😅
Great.
Gillian Keegan - take note about running tape recorders.
I wonder how many " tapes" are hanging around in real life?
Unfortunately, although the answer was indeed clear, simple, and straightforward, there is some difficulty in justifiably assigning to it the fourth of the epithets you applied to the statement, inasmuch as the precise correlation between the information you communicated and the facts, insofar as they can be determined and demonstrated, is such as to cause epistemological problems, of sufficient magnitude as to lay upon the logical and semantic resources of the English language a heavier burden than they can reasonably be expected to bear.
Describes my ex perfectly. Thought she was the price and expected princess treatment.
If only our current scavengers were people with integrity!
Back when Diversity meant a range of well written characters with clashing personalities and priorities
Epistemological
Not a word of Humphrey's speeches are wasted, even when we don't understand them.
These days referring someone to a speech you made on a certain date would be political suicide
This is a farm and the house commons.
COAST of Malabar song
He was not a well man at this stage.
This isn't the last ever episode, it isn't even Yes Prime Minister
What?
Yes it is & yes it is. It is the final episode of series 2, "The Tangled Web".
@@TheRip72 That isnt yes prime minister, that is yes minister
@@neddyladdy Sorry, you're wrong. I have just checked my DVDs to double check. Discounting the Christmas special double-length "Party Games", the last Yes Minister is "The Middle Class Rip Off", where Humphrey blocks Hacker's plans to sell a local art gallery & us the proceeds to pay his local football club's debts.
"A Tangled Web" is the final Yes, Prime Minister. (Not "The Tangled Web", which I wrote earlier - sorry). It was even in a different set. The room with the long table at the beginning of the clip is in No.10 & never featured in Yes, Minister.
Plus the fact that Jim Hacker is Prime Minister is a hefty clue.
That wasn't the last episode of Yes Prime Minister, Its an episode of Yes Minister.
No, it's "Yes, Prime Minister" -- I remember it from the brief stretch (several months) when WLIW brought it back.
Definitely Yes Prime Minister - the Cabinet Room set wasn't used in Yes Minister.
The clip opens with Jim, in the Cabinet Room, recounting his performance at PM's Question Time. The last part has Humphrey and Bernard sitting in the PM's private office.
brilliant
For reference, ₤81000 back then is worth about a quarter of a million quid these days, which indeed is in the ballpark for a Cabinet Secretary.
in abject poverty... brilliant
