Nigel Hawthorne is simply brilliant in the role of Sir Humprey , amazingly long dialogue of complicated information that amounts to nothing ! Perfect 😉
Read his book then, it will be revealed to you how brilliant is his gentle stroke of words that conveys true literal beauty than some masterful play of gibberish.
This series was absolutely brilliant indeed. The dialogue was so very clever and huge kudos would go to the script writers and the actors for the way in which they carried it all through. I don't think there has been a TV series ever that was as clever and funny as this one was. It is only the British who could have carried this out so magnificently.
Oh I don't know....The Goodies, Kenny Everett, DangerMouse, The Two Ronnie's and Dave Allen were just as brilliant. Was undoubtedly the best era for British television though.
This series and Yes Minister will surely go down in history as being the best and most brilliant of British humour. They made me so proud to be English. Sadly the state of British television has fallen to new depths since then and I doubt that it will ever find its way back. Truly sad indeed.
I would not say that these are the greatest moments of the show, because every part of the show is magnificent and equally great, the greatest show ever in human history.
@@ObviouslyKieran There are no hyphens in the word "nowadays", and OP was saying that Hacker is a better fictional leader than any current real life one, so your observation is asinine.

Best of Series 1 - Part 1 | Yes, Prime Minister | BBC Comedy Greats 2138pm 16.8.22 shows you what little power she who cannot be named had when dealing with the vast crank shaft that was the civil service... especially if the script writers ae, seemingly, dictating governmental policy... i agree, though, a very fine show. and does also prove that sit coms have dropped in quality over the last 2 decades...
Curious note that Scene from 19:17 till 21:02 was taped on site has the (at the time PM) Dame Margaret Tatcher was a big fan of the series consented that they could film that section there.
Actually it goes further back, way to the pilot episode in 1979, where Prime Minister Jim Callaghan gave permission for Yes Minister to show Hacker entering Number 10 when he was appointed Minister for Administrative Affairs. Reason was that Bernard Donohue a Labour Party adviser was friends with the writers and he gained permission from Jim Callaghan. Thatcher loved the show and she continued to extend the offer to use the location when needed.
@@johnking5174 Well far i heard she gave express permission for that section to be taped. If that had been allowed previously,. What MT did was a renovation. Plus if you look around in here you will find a sketch of Margaret Tatcher, James Hacker and Humphrey Appleby like has they were on a cabinet meeting, this happening during"Yes Minister" in 1984. The script of that special sketch was written by her.
@@arturs2436 Yes, let me just clarify. The 1979 pilot episode was filmed before the 1979 general election. During production, permission was granted by the then Prime Minister Jim Callaghan to allow them to quickly film in 10 Downing Street. Then when Thatcher came to power, show loved the show even more. When Yes Prime Minister was being planned she gave the production team permission not only to film in Downing Street, but also the production team got a tour around the inside of Downing Street, they saw the cabinet room, Prime Minister's office etc. They were told they had permission to recreate these interiors for the show, however they MUST change the layout of the corridors and some of the rooms for security reasons, which the production agreed to.
9:31 I always wondered about that in Social Security, even as a kid when I first heard about it, it never made sense how it was sustainable indefinitely.
In its original construction, Social Security was most certainly sustainable. What threw it out of balance was when LBJ merged the FICA tax revenue into the general budget AND expanded the beneficiaries without them having to contribute to the system. Furthermore, the Social Security Wage Base is capped at roughly $160K in 2023. That means all income up to that limit is subject to FICA taxes. After that, the fat cats run free. That means it is REGRESSIVE TAXATION. One good way to fix SS is to remove the Wage Base cap and begin creating a floor on the bottom end of the base where meager incomes are taxed at a very low rate i.e. 1%. Just enough for admin cost and to ensure that everybody has skin in the game.
I live in the USA. I wonder if there is a similar show base of this British tv show in the USA. Is this on Netflix or other social media TV beside UA-cam?
I believe the movie "Veep" is similar and focuses on the role of vice president, it was a spinoff of the TV show "In the thick of it" (and follow up movie "In the Loop") but only focusing on the civil service. I'm pretty sure they are all written and directed by the same people, so quality should be relatively consistent and similar to YM/YPM.
What would I give to have been in one of those studio audiences. They must have left the building holding their sides! “ you mean you’ve lost your key” for a start.
Even the smallest roles are played to perfection. Nobody mentioning the Police Constable standing guard at the actual door of No. 10? He appears like a pillar of resoluteness yet he hides it under his quiet, polite but professional demeanour. You can tell he truly is sorry that he cannot admit Sir Humphrey. Humphrey cannot pass untill further notice.
I hope Mr Sunak has been bingewatching these excellent series before taking up his position as PM. It's still as actual as it was atb the time of its first airing...
Out with the shovel Debbie and when you're done come up and help me shovel the driveway in Yonkers....( Still having nightmares about snow in NY...🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
I always thought that Big Tobacco, Alcohol, Big Pharna and now legalized marijuana, should pay all the expenses associated with Nationalized Health Care.

You're mistaken - he meant he lost his key :D
Absolute top of british professional comedy. Clever script, great comedic touches and amazing chemistry between truly skilled actors.
Yes I agree & can't help but feel at times that it's a shame they got old and died on us!
I’m 😊
There won't be another prime minister like The Right Honourable James George Hacker, saviour of the British Sausage.
Hole in the wall
Sausage toad
Made by the nurse and numbers of sausages
Chop chop a bit off
And you better believe it 😂🥳

Amazing writing and acting!
My dad was a huge fan, and watching these I can see why.
Tks for the upload.
brilliant can watch them again and again , never boring.
Best line in the entire show’s run is right at the very end:
“You mean you’ve lost your key?” 😂😂😂
Why use 6 words when 160 will do. 🤭🤣😂
Without doubt, one of the greatest Prime Ministers this country has ever had.
I loved Yes Minister when I was a young teen back in the early 80s, I still love it the same way today. The series is timeless.
Three great figures, embodied by three fantastic actors. But I think Sir Arnold hasn't been given enough credit. He's so adorable. And so is Annie.

Can't thank you enough for continually uploading these clips;)
Jim Hacker would be a better head of state than the vast majority of presidents/PMs nowadays
Look what happened in Ukraine: comedy star one day, brilliant crisis leader the next

Top acting by Humphrey especially at then end of this video.......and so funny....I could watch this again & again!

I love the way Sir Humphrey can change his opinion on a dime to apease the PM's statement .
OMG the part about The Key Is comedy gold.
I so wish you'd show both series again! There should be a Classic BBC channel and this would be ideal for it.
BBC Four did a repeat run of Yes Prime Minister in 2021 and early 2022. It used to be repeated on GOLD but not recently.
It's NOT so much the Cast/Acting, but it's the sheer BRILLIANCE of the Scripts!
