  • Last year I built the Conversion Hive and used it to migrate bees from a Langstroth nuc to Layens frames. Here's an update on how that colony is doing, now.

    I really do love this hive. you have created a very flexible hive that fascinates me with the possibilities.

    Just wanted to say thanks for the Sub. I appreciate it. 😊 I came over to check out what you had going on here on your channel and saw it was bees 🐝 which made me so happy! I’ll be watching some more of your videos and following your beekeeping journey. In the future I want to make this type of hive as well. Best wishes to you and your bees! Take care!

    A little late to the party but I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy the videos and info!! I would like to get a Layens swarm trap built for my place and get a hive started. Central Kansas I think would be good to have that type of setup! Going to be my first hive so doing all the research I can!! Thanks again!!

    YES! YES! YES! I'm in the process of building a horizontal hive quite similar to this because (even tho' I'm a new beek) I just knew that a Layens (or mega-frame) + Langstroth "supers to the side" arrangement would work very well for my bees, my old back and my budget (no special Layens extractor needed since all the honey would be extracted off the Langstroth frames). I'm planning on using Jim's (Vino Farm) mega-frames for the brood, and any honey in these frames belongs to the bees. The only unresolved question is whether to position the brood frames in the middle of the hive, with supers potentially on both sides, or to one side. It looks like your bees would happily build out honey frames to both sides, given the option.
    Big thumbs up on your "conversion" hive that converted itself into an awesome "supers on the side" hive.
    Vicki Lynne in N.C. (looking to start/further a new hive trend, y'all...... Now repeat after me: supers - on - the - side! 🙂 🙂 🙂

      Although I kind of stumbled into this approach by simply leaving the Langstroth frames in the hive after conversion, it's similar to Jean Hurpin's design for an "improved" Layens hive from the 1940's. It's attractive, and practical, to use larger frames for brood & overwintering while using smaller frames for harvest. In fact, the first hive I built (now "Taj Mahive" seen in other videos) was originally made as a double-deep long hive to use large "Lazutin" frames for brood and deep Langstroth frames for harvest. But, although it was based on plans from his site, Dr. Leo convinced me that managing such a hive can get complicated. It was after I saw him work his Layens hives and I recognized the simplicity of the design that I was sold and converted to Layens.
      I may continue managing the "conversion hive" with two frame sizes, or "super on the side", as you say. But I will say that while this might seem practical there is a simplicity to using all one frame size. This may be why Hurpin's designs never really gained traction. Every beekeeper should decide what's right for them and I certainly value experimentation, so I wish you well on your journey.

    Hey thanks for your videos love them great job, just wondering how many entrances do you leave open when you were trying to get them to migrate to the layens frames and then now after they are filling the Langstroth with honey do you have an entrance open over there ?

    • @SuburbanSodbuster
      @SuburbanSodbuster  2 місяці тому

      I only open one entrance, on the end by where the brood frames are (or will be).

    What about the squirrel? So your going to get to try out your Layens extractor have you unboxed it yet? Look forward to seeing it in use even if it’s with Langstroth frames. I’ve decided to build an extractor that will hold two Layens, two Langstroth or four medium or four shallow frames.

    What about the squirrel? What did you do with the comb that you cleaned off the bottom of the one layens frame? Thanks again!

    • @SuburbanSodbuster
      @SuburbanSodbuster  2 роки тому +1

      I set the comb out for the bees to clean out any honey, then it went into a bucket with other old comb to be cleaned and rendered later.

    Just have to say I really appreciated your migration hive videos. Here in UK, I successfuly did a similar thing with a British national frames nuc into a Dr Leonid Sharaskins layens hive.The complicated difference being I had to set the Natinal frames at 90 degrees to the lasyens frames due the the narrow width of the hive. The migration was a great sucess except I now have hony over empty brood cells which I can't use like your are for honey storage in your Langstroth frames. Any sugestions as to what I shoiuld do to restore the layens hive to its orgiginal format? Maybe I should just cut out the comb and honey and rubber band it into the Layense frames. What di you think? Loving your videos but the way.

    • @SuburbanSodbuster
      @SuburbanSodbuster  День тому

      Did you put the National frames on the end farthest from the entrance? If so you could wait and see if they'll fill the remaining cells with honey. As long as the frames haven't been exposed to treatment there's no reason that honey couldn't be harvestable. But if that's not feasible you could cut out the honey comb and put it in a pan in the open end of the hive. If you're in a dearth period I recommend doing this a little at a time, in the evening, to avoid attracting robbers to the smell of liquid honey.

    Tell me, is it normal to have a douzen or so brood cels that didn't hatch with a couple of bees that started to hatch but gave up the ghost with just their antenia and partial eyes showing?

    • @SuburbanSodbuster
      @SuburbanSodbuster  День тому

      This sounds unusual. Earlier than emergence I might suspect that the brood got chilled. At emergence I wonder if there is some toxin exposure. As long as the incidence is limited and the hive is otherwise healthy I wouldn't be too worried about it.

      Hello, Todd, and thank you for your concern about the squirrel. The first winner that I drew has not responded so I drew again and you've won the second chance drawing. If you will send an e-mail to me at contact@suburbansodbuster.com, with your shipping info, then I'll get your prize to you. You won't be added to a mailing list (I don't have one).
