    It should say a lot that your favorite part of the friend ad was where the person actively decides to not use the product. Great job guys, really selling it here!

      I think the purpose of that part of the ad was to show that the person wanted to talk to FRIEND in a moment of discomfort. But at the same time the person was trying to balance that with not wanting to make it uncomfortable for the other person.
      To me the main purpose of the scene was to show that FRIEND is there for you in your uncomfortable situations.
      Interested in your thoughts and whether you have changed your mind or not :)

      @@loading2660 I 100% understand what they're going for! They're trying to make the social anxiety equivalent to a nicotine patch, slowly acclimating you to social situations until you dont feel you need the assistance.
      The problem is that this product as-is will not do that for a few reasons. The first and most obvious is that it can't physically speak back to you like a real person. Receiving a text message is not an adequate substitute for a real conversation. Secondly, talking to your necklace and then burying your head in your phone for a response would pull you out of any conversation you're trying to have with anyone else, meaning it makes no sense to wear it in public. Third, AI chat bots don't think like humans, they just word vomit in a way they think sounds like a human. It can't truly understand what it's saying, and tone is incredibly difficult to convey correctly through just text, which if you haven't noticed is a huge part of social interaction.
      I understand that what I said was a bit tongue and cheek, but as it looks now I feel that it's less of a tool and more of a crutch, a very shaky one at that.

    An "AI wearable necklace" is just so confusing to me... Isn't that just your cellphone, that you already keep with you at all times? Especially if you need something like a reminder for later you can just use Hey Google or Siri. "Solving loneliness and anxiety" by talking aloud to an AI is also a wild idea. I do like Stanz's takes here because both Nik and Avi are cringe as hell but I have a bit of disagreements with some of the framing around open source/hackathon projects.
    Regarding security, end-to-end encryption not being implemented is obviously not good if you're selling a product and going to market. However, if you're building a product in a day, this is very low on the list of priorities, and Nik is framing this as something that you would host yourself. I.e. in non-tech speak, Nik is not selling you anything, and Nik would not be able to see any of your conversations because you would run this on your own computer(s).
    Regarding stealing ideas: I think this is a line that's different for different people, but generally I don't really care if an individual is "stealing" an idea from a company because the company always has more resources to make their product better than anything a single person or small team can make. Like Nik's framing is actually something I kind of agree with, which is that AI wearables that you buy for 100$ and then pay 20$ every month to use is really cringe when the actual tech is so shoddy. Implementation is 99% of where the value proposition of tech lies ("I have a great idea for an app", etc): like youtube copying tiktok might be scummy, but also youtube shorts clearly is worse product, so it's clear that the idea only gets you so far anyways.

    • @KlausKlass
      @KlausKlass Місяць тому +2

      I agree on both points. I actually think a self hosted always listening AI agent would be useful if done right. Imo chat bots are kinda corny, but a search bar for things that happened in your day would go a long way in helping people with bad memory. It's going to be a while until someone gets it right but I think Nik's version at least was an attempt. Avi's companion idea just seems useless and dystopian at the same time.

      Lemme preface by saying i think the product is not good. But I think the idea they were trying to show is that she used friend for a long time bringing it to the secret spot talking to it etc. And then it "helped" her work up the courage to talk and begin communication with others. Kind of a bridge between loner and first real friend

  • @KlausKlass
    @KlausKlass Місяць тому +5

    I might be in the minority, but I kinda want an always listening AI model, as long as it isn't connected to the internet (which both of these fail). It would be cool to have a database of summarized versions of conversations, what I was doing, who I met, etc that I could later search through. I could just look up anything I happened to forget. I don't even want a chat, just a really good search bar. I think my memory is pretty ok now, but I know its not going to stay that way forever so I feel like such a system would be useful for a lot of people. I don't think privacy is a huge issue if you never store audio recordings and never let data leave your device. Also even though Nik may not be a good person I think its morally ok for people to copy tech products like Nik did if they are making them open source. I don't see him copying Avi as a problem - most tech products are a copy of something that came before.

    seperate from their dumb and useless products, Avi and Nik are individually cringers. It's obvious why Nik is, but Ari seems like the exact guy who just knows how to attach himself to successful things even if he's not doing that much work. The covid website's a great example: the numbers are what matters, and the presentation is mostly marketing and UI design. Obviously those things matter, but what he did isn't hard to do, he just happened to do it soon enough and bubble to the top. "I'm will solve loneliness and anxiety in one product" says it all. He seems like yet another smart person who's actually as dumb as the average person in most domains but has the social capital to do a wide range of things he doesn't really know about. He will likely be fine after all of this, maybe move onto some other project about LLM solutions to interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal issues. Wouldn't be surprised if he's on a project like "making therapy more accessible via AI" which is just AI therapists, then acquired by BetterHelp for 30 mil 1.5 years after establishment.

    The commercial at 5:33 is actually a bold statement. The product is kinda dumb for most people but for those people who have high social anxiety and find it difficult to start new friendships I could actually see this being useful. The boldness of the commercial comes from its message of being a product(not unlike how vapes/fum are advertised) that you will eventually not need to use. I honestly see this being a welcomed, albeit niche, medical device that could be given to you by a therapist.

    These wearable ais definitely need to be iterated further before they have any actual use, so an open source version sold for little profit is far better than the super overpriced garbage that other companies are trying to sell. A cheap open source device is at least much better than basically buying a second phone without all the features of a phone. I guess phones are too large and heavy to be around your neck all day and couldn't hear you from your pocket... But we have earbuds that most people are already using that have microphones built in that go for cheaper than this device, wired or wireless.
    I don't believe we need a permanent ai assistant to listen to your entire day, but I do think that this could evolve into something of use to some group of people - maybe something like intelligent noise control for people that get overwhelmed easily, filtering out background noise but relaying conversations directed to the wearer, and possibly summarising or slowing down those conversations for people with intellectual disabilities. Edit: Stanz mentioned the possible benefits for such people, but that tools already exist in that space, which I guess makes sense but I'm not aware of those tools so maybe an ai necklace would still be redundant.

      For an always listening device you kinda do need a separate device. Your phone won't let you continuously record and even if it could it isn't optimized to do so, so it would drain really fast. It's reasonable to say "why would anyone want an always listening device", but I think it wouldn't be a bad thing if done correctly (i.e. with no data leaving your possession and no audio recordings being saved).
