I have good news. An English translation patch of Melfand Stories is recently released. The game translated by an online entity called Gan. I was in the 8th grade at the time of the game’s release in Japan. It was released in Japan about a week before Final Fantasy VI.
You're the best channel on UA-cam for finding all these (forgive me for using this term) "hidden gems". Like you've talked about it before too, other channels call something as well known as Demons Quest as a hidden gem. But THIS game, this cool Japanese beat em up, is an actual genuine hidden gem. You're constantly talking about games no other channel does and that's part of why I love this channel and binge watch your videos one after the other
Heck yes!!! I have a modded wii with most snes and genesis games. I watch this channel to find the next game I can try . It is difficult to choose each game because there 2,000 games to choose from on my wii
Without a doubt the best retro gaming channel on UA-cam. Unlike so many others you immediately get to the point and you don't ramble or constantly repeat yourself. Thank you for that, and also for informing me of incredible games such as this. Your channel is the main reason why my retro gaming shelf is what it is today, and why I have so many "pipe dream" games on my Switch wish list. Thank you.
About the music, a lot of developers weren't used to the concept of managing PCM audio samples for instruments, since before the SNES basically all Japanese console and PC hardware used sound chips with NES style waveforms or a combination of wavetable synthesis or FM synthesis. These all generate mathematically perfect frequencies for notes of the standard 12-note scale. With samples, a single sound file has to be manually tuned to a base frequency to be resampled for different notes, and a combination of it being the early 90s (less availability of automatic tuning software) and this being a totally foreign concept for composers and sound programmers resulted in some games where the frequencies of different instrument samples were not tuned uniformly. Like a piano sample might be tuned more or less to C natural, while the string section sample might be tuned somewhere in between C and C# or B. Which led to some noticeable off key dissonance in some games, a good example being Breath of Fire 1.
I wouldn't say it was atonal because the voices still lead correctly. The use of dissonance here is liberal but the notes were part of the scales tonally.
I've been patiently waiting for this to get a SNES reproduction since a friend of mine stopped making them before I learned about this game a couple years back. The music sounds fine to me. Great review, this game looks sweet!
We are now close to the point where you are gonna have to start making new SNES games by yourself in order to have something to review. Do you need a hand with sound design?
Well, that’s harsh. As far as games to review, between Japan, North America, and Europe, over 1700 licensed games came out for the system. Currently he’s been through like 600-700
The characters look super cute, and I love that the status pic has an animation for when they get hit. Also, did anyone notice that they were fighting a Giant "Warm"?
I love this game and can’t believe there’s no patch yet. That carriage mode 7 board looks great. The controls aren’t perfect but I’d suggest this game to everyone.
Could this be a Super Famicom gem that is *truly* still hidden? In 2019!? Unbelievable! Good job finding this one! It does indeed look a lot like Popful Mail(also Wonder Boy). I would not call this a beat-em-up though. In my opinion, games like these would be labeled as platforming/action RPG hybrids.
I read that title as "Welfare Stories" and my mind immediately conjured images of anime dudes at the Corn Crib gas station asking if aqua net was covered by EBT, and anime ladies waiting for the first of the month on the front lawns of their trailer homes smoking salems and cradling wedlock babies.
Sting? As in, the same Sting behind Baroque, Riviera, Yggdra Union, Knights In The Nightmare, and the rest of the Department Heaven series? Hot damn, they have quite the track record.
It definitely sounds like they've used two different synths that haven't been set to the same root frequency and therefore are out of tune (with each other). Btw your channel is AWESOME
I love Snes drunk and usually whole heartedly agree with whatever he says. But I must say, I thought the music sounded great and also a lot of variety.
This looks great. I am reminded of Chiki Chiki Boys art style on the Megadrive (Though not quite as nice).Especially the skeleton enemies, very similar design.
The music sounds like it was inspired from other games more so than having it's own identity. For the tracks you had playing in the video it sounded more like if I were close my eyes and only listen to the sound track I would think I'm hearing different games instead of one.
The music sounds to me like they were going for a Middle Eastern vibe, I don't know if that means they have it in a different key or what, but that's what those combinations of notes invoke.
You should consider doing a switchdrunk series. Seeing as a hoard of classic arcade games are on it, new games that would have fit in way back when the classic consoles were out not to mention some of them would have been considered all time greats had they came out back then. You’ve done steamdrunk and I think that the Nintendo switch is much more of a prime console to this for over steam. Also going into sega Saturn, psone, Dreamcast etc. would be a great way to branch out and id love to hear your opinions about games on those systems.
Whoa, what an awesome looking game. Ive never heard or seen anything about this one before, Nora is adorable :D. Id really love to try this one sometime. Thanks Drunk!
For some reason I get a castle crashers vibe from this game and I don’t know why. Also I highly recommend castle crashers for Nintendo switch, or even xbox 360 or ps3. Highly recommended.
Guess I'm a little more sensitive to notes being out of key than most commenters here, but would be a pass for me for the music only. Yikes. Little tuning would've helped
I wonder if we’re ever going to have another generation and gaming as good as the super Nintendo and Sega Genesis generation you really can’t go wrong with either system and both have amazing titles that are completely different from each other you don’t get that shit anymore and I wonder exactly why with all the technology and all the power we have nowadays everything seems very cookie-cutter and quite frankly boring.
It's because of all the technology and all the power that things have become very cookie-cutter and frankly boring. We need some limitations. We need to think and work outside the box.
The indie scene is where the creativity is at nowadays. I honestly think that we're having somewhat of a new 2D gaming era or renaissance with some of the fantastic games have come out lately. The messenger, katana zero, blazing chrome, 19XX, cyber shadow, gun lord x, there's so much. But I agree with your comment!
@mio mia I think there's just a lot less creativity in many games these days, and from AAA developers in general. Games are a multi-billion dollar industry now and they're just not as interested in taking risks these days. A lot of modern games do feel pretty derivative, despite all their graphical shine. When you combine that derivative feeling with the whole "appeal to all audiences" aspect and a lack of desire to cater to specific niches due to needing to squeeze every bit of cash flow out of a game... yeah, it can come across as bland. I find many modern games to feel "samey" to one another.
Leetha K7 seriously buy a nintendo switch(preferably the full one not the lite as it has features that I know are going to be used more in the future that the lite won’t have.) its host to a plethora of old school arcade games, classic games and games that could have been considered all time greats when the snes and genesis/mega drive were out. It also always has really good deals on good games too. I’ve literally got a $20 eshop card and got 9 games that were all really good.
Slightly off key notes or even whole instruments are somewhat common in SNES games. Some instruments can sound fine at one octave but worse and worse the more they're pitched up

Drunk makes me want to go play these rare japanese games right away. I have a bunch on the list already. He is awesome
Most people who make videos or articles about "hidden gems" just search other people's lists and pick their favorites.
It's also because those games were hidden gems in the days of that console. With internet the hidden gems are constantly getting fewer.
Heck yes!!! I have a modded wii with most snes and genesis games. I watch this channel to find the next game I can try . It is difficult to choose each game because there 2,000 games to choose from on my wii
All facts
One of the only channels where I can confidently smash like before watching the video.

The music is just advanced polytonal jazz, even if it was accidentally created
Time for an Adam Neely collab :D
Well damn. I just commented almost the same thing. That'll teach me
@@RoboBoddicker that guy sucks
LoL It's not even remotely jazzy. Sounds fine tho
Music sounded mechanically correct to my ears.
It is. Sporadically there are disonant intervals, but everything fits.
I think the timbres themselvres might be -cents off tune, but the notes themselves are all 'agreeing' with each other
“There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.” epic channel you have sir
This has been my favorite channel for years
Love the art style on the thumbnail. Brings me back to the 90s
I just wanted to say thanks for being so awesome. Watching your reviews always helps to brighten my day.
The last song you sampled has an atonal melody. It's compositionally solid, just hits the ears awkwardly.
I wouldn't say it was atonal because the voices still lead correctly. The use of dissonance here is liberal but the notes were part of the scales tonally.
Thanks again for all the awesome vids man.
Watching this first thing in the morning to maximize having a great rest of my day 👍
Hahah right on brotha! 😁👌
It almost sounds like the soundfont they're using has overtones that don't harmonize well with the formants. I see why you think it sounds offkey.
Do you ever try to make chords with your intros? Everytime you say SNES Drunk it makes me smile and laugh.
Looks fun. Keep up the good work SNES drunk!
Looks like Crono is still traveling through time and showing up in games.
Good work my friend! Well done! Your dedication to the cause is appreciated.
Thank you for spotlighting so many games I have never heard
Thanks again, SNESdrunk! Keep up that Famicom line, some of us have HUGE game lists for our PCs and SBCs that we don't know all the games on!
This is one of those games someone would describe to you they played one day and you would never guess what is.
Killin' it with the game choices, Drunk. I got this one put on an NTSC SNES cart a while ago. I love the branching 'easy/hard' paths.
Looks beautiful! Thanks for the great content!
When I saw this, I thought it was gonna be a game like Tales of Phantasia or something.
I thought the exact same thing!
Dude I've watched soooo many of your movies, just want to say thank you.
*You’re the BEST SNESDRUNK!!!*
I've been patiently waiting for this to get a SNES reproduction since a friend of mine stopped making them before I learned about this game a couple years back. The music sounds fine to me. Great review, this game looks sweet!
A beat em up that's totally my style! Thanks Drunk!
Sick harmony in the intro
I have to admit, i did here some notes that sounded off to me as well. Great review. Keep up the good work Drunk.
We are now close to the point where you are gonna have to start making new SNES games by yourself in order to have something to review.
Do you need a hand with sound design?
Maybe I do. Do u have any experience with Unity?
How about you go fuck yourself?

This looks like a cool game! I will give it a try. Thanks, SNESDrunk! You too have a great rest of your day!
Music sounds ok I'd say. Love these vids about lesser known games.
Going to try this one today. Thanks for the recomendation!

adding this to my flash cart never even heard of it

@@Three_shorts3 Man, buy a cheap wii and softmod it, get gamecube or classic controllers, play away...
Sounds like when the music is affected by an overclock or something
Really great visuals.
Sometimes I do the SNES drunk entrance sound along with the video and I try and guess when it will end. I never get it.
This sounds like a fun game. I'm going to try this too from now on!

Loved the not that Sting or that sting joke. I thought of the wrestler when you first said it.
Watch out for the Giant Warm!
Sting? As in, the same Sting behind Baroque, Riviera, Yggdra Union, Knights In The Nightmare, and the rest of the Department Heaven series? Hot damn, they have quite the track record.
Sting is known for JRPGs too. Riviera the promised land, yggra Union, knights in nightmare

Thanks, I will have a great rest of my day!
Yet another game I’ve never heard of before brought to my attention. Thank you SNES DRUNK.
It’s generally harder to enter through the back door, just saying.
Those ax wielding guys remind me of the ax wielding guys from Zelda II
is quite a charming game, perfect for a 90s comedy-fantasy anime on a saturday morning
never heard about this b4, thanks man!!

This game looks fun and unique (for the SNES catalogue) - shame no one has translated it.
This is one of those games I keep hoping gets an English patch. Yeah, you dont need it but it really would make it feel complete.
Beat'em Ups are the best
Whoa, what an awesome looking game. Ive never heard or seen anything about this one before, Nora is adorable :D.

Now you're playing with power super power
Yes awesome!! More cool japanese games!!!
I thought that guy's name was Corpse at first. It's Corse at a second glance.
FYI good people, their is an English Patch now!
With the green and orange outfit and purple hair I weirdly can't stop looking at the Nora character as a genderbent Trunks
So you have to save the kingdom from...the Iron Sheik?
Either way, the sprite work here is really good.
I will have to add this game to my list of games to find. It looks decent enough and I come for the pixel art anyways.
For some reason I get a castle crashers vibe from this game and I don’t know why. Also I highly recommend castle crashers for Nintendo switch, or even xbox 360 or ps3. Highly recommended.

You need to make a play through video one of these days +SNES drunk
How does the guy with the trident have the shortest range? Logic would say it should be the longest.
