this was such a valuable video to watch. I took a class in university that was an entire semester, and all we did was build ONE of these "art Bibles" from the ground up (using a script we were provided). Everyone in the class had to set the story in a different city (I think we were restricted to real-world locations), and do all the research, illustration, and design to establish the art direction of the story. Actually going through the process is something else, and it's a tremendous challenge. I'm so grateful to have such a succinct resource to help me remember and get excited to do it again for one of my own projects!
Awesome, that is an excellent semester long project to do, and I'm glad you found my video inspirational, hopefully there's a tip of two in there that enhances what you already learned in that class.
Thanks for this! I've been recently tasked to make an art bible for a small indie game project, but I honestly had no idea where to start. This helped a lot!
Thanks Jeff, that's one of the inspirations behind me making the video, I wish I could find other videos on the topic, and since I couldn't, figured I'd do my best to make my own.
This was so informative and extremely helpful for my own project. I'm so used to going through a certain pipeline when it comes to doing concept work and having to try and understand how to format an art bible was super confusing (for context, i'm studying games art at uni). Thank you so much for this!
Nice! Getting ahead of the demand. With the progress on IA generated content Art Direction is proably one of the top tier demanded jobs in the close future, so it is nice people covering this right now!
Sadly, no. Getting the Art Of Books sometimes includes some art bible materials, but there is very little out there publicly available on art bibles, which was one reason I made this video. I did see a great talk though the other day which had some art bible discussion about Halo Infinite. It was for Gallery Nucleus, and they said they would post the video in a few days. May be worth following them on twitter.
Thanks Neil :) Do you find these get made for shows more "grounded" in Earth? The closest to one of these I've ever been given was on Snowpiercer, and it was just all the concept art from the last season next to the sets that were built based on the concepts.
So the majority of the projects I've worked on have been animated features or videogames, and in those types of projects you get art bibles a lot. Haven't done a ton of vfx films / tv shows, so don't know how common to see these sorts of things there. But I think they would still be super helpful.
@@ArtOfSoulburn Right on. I think it would be awesome to have...I think one of the reasons it hasn't been as big is because the art departments for TV is often so incredibly controlled by the production designer in terms of vision that they haven't felt like there was a need...but I really agree with you, it would be very helpful.
@@eldritch48 is think that as the production designer, you make the art bible and it makes it easier for the team to follow that vision. But I also know tv can be far more chaotic than animated films, so many may not feel they have the time to make one. I mean, I didn’t finish mine in time for the book production, so I empathize :) but I’m gonna prioritize them from now on, I’ve seen all the good they can do
@@ArtOfSoulburn Yeah, and there's not a lot of great communication often between the writing room and the art department, so you end up playing catch-up a lot to the needs of the story. I love art bibles and worldbuilding, so I definitely agree with you. The variant of the idea I'm most interested in is what gets made for a pitch package to sell an idea to the network.
@@eldritch48 I have a written tutorial about what a pitch book is: www.neilblevins.com/art_lessons/pitchbook/pitchbook.htm may be more high level than you’re looking for, but may be worth reading
Great insights. I’ve picked up the digital copy of the book. I like the look of your Megastructures book as well. Do you think you will release a digital copy of that?
Thanks for picking up Inc Brian! Yes, there will be a digital copy of Megastructures, but it'll go on sale after we ship all the physical books. So early summer likely.
Yickes, that's crazy! UA-cam is getting too aggressive with it's monetization. Found a setting and kept the ads at the beginning but removed all interior ads, hopefully that helps. Thanks for letting me know.
Everything is amazing however the robot designs kinda lack in design appeal and goes against design aesthetics, it should have many designs features that would eliminate heat, like heat sinks, a slender design, external hoses for cooling, etc.

Awesome, best of luck with the project, so glad this can help you with some formatting ideas.
This is amazing, thanks! Incredible information, top-tier Neil!
Thanks Galileo, glad you liked it!
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, these are topics that aren't commonly touched on in other tutorials. Great stuff!!

i love the Inc Book. And these videos are really inspiring me to tell my own stories. Thank you!!
Thanks Garry. If this inspires you to tell your own stories, then I am so happy as this is the exact effect I hope to achieve :)
Thanks for the informative video, now i'll have to check out "The Story Of Inc" for sure!
Awesome, glad you found it inspiring!
Thanks Neil ! Very useful and well explained, as usual !

Clean and simple. Thanks for sharing Neil :)
Thanks Pascal. It's a hard topic to summerize (hence the longer than normal run time), glad you felt I was able to keep it straightforward.

3 ads by the ten minute mark. Makes it tough to follow.
