  • WARNING: please read bellow for your safety:
Try removing this in a hot summer day when the plastic is much softer. In winter time, it gets so stiff, it will be hard to remove. REPLACE the clip if you break it or if the small tabs that secure it to the frame get damaged, or you will get injured by the flying trim in a crash - check the main dealer or a junk yard for this part. It takes very thin fingers and some patience to put the clip and trim back in place, but it goes the exact same way, just reverse. Notice at 1:07 how the clip sits: the thicker piece goes inside the metal pillar, and the longer 'strap' goes towards the engine. See this other updated video • Removing the A-pillar ...

This clip keeps the trim attached when the curtain airbag deploys, otherwise the airbag explosion will project the trim piece towards the passengers and can hurt them badly to the face (the airbag is right under this trim piece and deploys with great force, it's basically an explosion that can project the A-pillar trim with force). I recommend replacing the trim piece and clip with new ones to make sure they are safe. The clip has several small tabs where it attached to the frame, these tabs can get damaged upon removal. There are at least two clip sizes, depending on the car's VIN number. This clip is only sold with the pillar cover. The clip for the left pillar may also be different than for the right pillar. This is just an example for the right pillar clip, look at the fitment description for the VIN numbers www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-a-pillar-interior-trim-panel-genuine-volvo-39856779#fitment

Thank you! Exactly what I need to know! The cloth covering on the trim is coming away both sides, so I needed to glue it back, but impossible with the trim in place. Thanks again!😊 2005 V70.

Thank you for sharing this ! I got it off an XC70 without damaging it , thanks to you ! I had a leak & wanted to inspect the hose . I also had peeling fabric on it, Your The Man .

Very welcome! We can also replace the fabric pillars with regular non fabric ones - just need to find ones with identical clips

Use a thin 17mm open-end wrench (like a Park Tool for bicycles) to rotate the clip - much easier than fingers.

Use a large screw driver to turn the black plastic clip. Its tight and hurts your fingers. When replacing the trim look from the outside to ensure the yellow clip half way down will locate in the hole. Use plastic tools to pop the door seal if its under the pillar trim.

Thank you truly, this has helped me. I had to remove the trim to glue the fabric.

Welcome. The peeling fabric is a common issue indeed. I'm not sure but depending on the year you can also swap the A pillar fabric trim with a non fabric one - I know it was already done on forums. But it depends on the year, much find a safety clip that matches, etc.

Most welcome. A small pliers can also help (better than fingers), just needs a bit of attention not to force on anything.

Thank you so much. Now I know why mine won't stay in place: that clip was broken. It's been driving me crazy.

Good find. This clip is important: if ever there is a crash and the curtain airbag that sits under this cover will deploy, this special clip will keep the cover in place so it doesn't fly and hurt a passenger. I believe it's possible to replace only the clip, but don't think Volvo it's selling the clip separately. However it's very easy to source a pillar from the junk yard or even from Ebay.

My 1999 S80 fabric started to pull away from the a-pillers and I wanted to renew them. The 99 S80s have a wire safety catch not the plastic ones in your video. I can’t get that wire to lay flat to snap the piller trim back in🤔

If I don't forget, I'll try to make a video next time on a S80 with this wire

Thank God I'm not the only one. It's been driving me absolutely insane. It seems like there's no way to properly orientate that damn wire hanger to allow the clips to snap into place. Mines a 2001 s80 t6. I've been driving around without it because it looks like crap just hanging there.

If you have the trims with peeling fabric, it is tricky to fix the fabric. Some people suggested buying new fabric and using spray adhesive, but other people say it won't last. You can also replace them with the full plastic trims, they should be compatible but you have to find the ones that fit your model year and have the same safety clip. If you are looking for new fabric, this product 'may' work - I haven't tried myself www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Headliner-Headlining-Fabric-2mm-Foam-Back-IVORY-Sold-by-the-Metre-140cm-Wide/292727578033?hash=item4427ec5db1:g:w2YAAOSwzyBbm-PE

The fabric on mine is also coming off, so I was thinking about removing the trim pieces, removing the fabric, sanding the residual glue and spray painting the trim pieces to match the dash. And re-installing without cloth. What do you think?
