    How disgraceful, that publishers have a 'slush pile,' where they put unread manuscripts, which they regard as junk, simply because the author is as yet unknown.
    Writing even a short story to the point at which it can be offered to a publisher takes an immense effort - and these bums can't even be bothered to give it a chance. The fools who passed up the 'Harry Potter' tales deserve all they failed to get.

    • @Joy6168
      @Joy6168 8 років тому +14

      @Offshoreoreganbuilder: I too am angered at some publisher's not giving new authors a chance, however, that isn't always what the 'slush pile' is used for. The 'slush pile' is where all of the manuscripts that don't fit the publisher's qualifications, such as genre and category, are put, most of the time.

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder 8 років тому +6

      432mag Interesting!
      I can understand why publishers would want to keep to a certain types of manuscript - the ones they have had success with in the past - but there should, surely, be some better system than the 'slush pile.' There must, for instance, be some who will return the copy with suggestions for another publisher.
      In any case, the comment made here was that the Harry Potter manuscript was 'noticed' on the slush pile and its value recognised - but only by accident. So it must have been appropriate material for that particular publisher, yet it still ended up on the 'pile.'
      Maybe this is a reflection of the very large number of manuscripts being offered by unknown writers?

    • @Joy6168
      @Joy6168 8 років тому +2

      Offshoreorganbuilder Exactly, I couldn't have said it better myself. You'd think someone would return the copy with suggestions for another publisher, unfortunately, if an editor or literary agent isn't interested in your work, it'll just be sent back with a note saying they can't take your manuscript right now.
      Harry Potter was appropriate enough material because Bloomsbury had just opened a children's division, which is why it was 'accepted'.
      Yes, this is definitely a reflection of the very large number of manuscripts being offered by unknown writers, especially after so much success in recent years compared to in the late nineteen nineties when Harry Potter was first published.

      @minilopsided 7 років тому +8

      A story can be disreguarded for many reasons. For one, not being edited enough (TOO many basic errors) or interesting enough. If it cant keep their attention as someone who wants to read then it wont sell. It can also be too long which is a lot of the reasons HP book 1 got rejected. What ten year old would want to read book after book that is over 100,000 words? Adults have a hard time with books like that often. Now I like long books, like Stormlight Archive which has over 1,000 PAGES with big pages. But it took him years as even a well known and amazing author to get it to be published. Because say you publish a book that long but the author doesnt have a following, it might not make it big. Most authors dont make more than a few thousand a year if they do pretty good. Its not something you can rely on. They are so strict because unless you are part of the writing community and perhaps hate writing or just dont want to be an author and arent part of that community, you wouldnt know how MANY people want to be authors. And most of them dont write all that well. They need more practice. And to be honest, I wouldnt be surprised if a lot of those stories are by people with pride and overconfident. I personally write and I write a lot. I love writing, I even have one story finally done at 50k. First draft however and terribly written. Pretty much every author hates putting their work out there. They never think its good enough. Ask any author, even published authors. They are terrified. And yes, they get reject, but Im part of an online TEEN writing group and we have over 700 memebers with thousands more who arent part of the group. Imagine, every single one of those thousands of authors want to be published. Well, they can self publish or go through a company. If they go through a company or traditionally publish which I personally like better, just think how many other TEENS and ADULTS want to be published.They look through THOUSANDS a day. They cant read the whole book. And another main part is, it has to catch attention in the three chapters, if not one chapter or the first page. Now, this isnt to say you are wrong, I personally agree that they should take more care, and pass it on. And guess what? They do that! If you ask an author who is good, great, but got rejected, they just might have gotten an rec to another person to publish it. But its the sheer amount that they go through each day along with the emails, working with the stories they already have going, working with their published authors with a following. Its not as easy and a lot of times, its just interest. J.K. likely didnt just rewrite the first chapter because it gave too much away or maybe she did but guess what! Each time, it became better. It became more interesting. This is just my opinion and what I have picked up in the five years I have been writing. But hey, What do I know? I would even say ask a publisher yourself if you want to know other reasons for the "slush" pile. And guess what? The writing industry is lax. In the movie and TV, they /look/ a whole lot more for formatting errors. You format one thing wrong, and they say no. It is a whole lot harder to get a script published. Anyway, Im really not trying to attack you. Im just stating my interitation of the facts and I ask that you dont get mad at me. But if you really want to know or make a difference, ask and find out how it really works first. "Going into the slush pile" is simplifying it all way too much. I can even ask my published friends about it if you have questions. I personally, have only published one fanfic that is not done and maybe a short story and poem online. So I dont know everything, but I have done a LOT of reading because I think I like reading more than writing. Anyway, this is long. Sorry, really, if I offend you.

    • @Offshoreorganbuilder
      @Offshoreorganbuilder 7 років тому +1

      Minilopsided Thanks for the long and interesting comment; there is no question of 'offence' being taken. (People take, or think they should take, 'offence' far too easily, these days.) It's a pleasure to find someone who can actually *write* and express themselves (and grammatically, too!)
      I imagine that you are correct in what you say, but the bottom line is, surely, that the system should be better. If a publisher is not interested, they should say so, and give a reason. One sentence would do. "Thanks for your manuscript, but we found it too full of basic errors ...")
      I published one, short story, via Amazon Kindle, and was pleased with the response. Some liked it. Some did not. At one point, it hit number 6 in the 'Teen and Young Adult' category - no idea why! It 'sold' some hundreds of copies, which I felt justified the time taken to write it. As you point out, the number of grammatical and technical slips (which defied proof-reading) was remarkable. Maybe this is the way forward for the many, who just love writing and want someone to read their work.
      It is, however, evident that the 'slush pile' is *not* a good idea, when such a system rejects the likes of 'Harry Potter.'

      At some time in their life, every Harry Potter fan will eventually have to come to terms with the fact that JKRowling is a jerk and not a very nice person who treats her fans like crap. The sooner they figure it out, the better off they will be. The sooner they figure it out, the sooner they can stop trying to defend every stupid or wrong thing she says or does. The sooner they figure it out, the sooner they can look at the books as a good read but stop idolizing a very flawed person. You won't have to try to defend her involvement with the parents in the Madeleine McCann case. You won't have to try to defend her efforts to ruin the young man called PewDeePie by calling him a Nazi. You won't have to defend her adding things to her books that are not written in the books but just in her comments or other sources. You won't have to defend any of her crap. You won't have to worry about her blocking you from Twitter because you see one of her characters differently than her. You won't have to agree with all her political agenda and go around fighting with every one over her politics. You will be able to just enjoy the books and take them in perspective and think for your self. You will be free of the curse of having to try to defend this woman. Free, free at last.

    • @jcsgodmother
      @jcsgodmother 7 років тому

      I did not mean to jump to conclusions. Sorry if I did. If you have learned to just like the books but view her and her statements and actions with skepticism, you have made the adjustment. So many of HP fans totally idolize JKR and to them she can do no wrong. She is the standard of right v wrong and good v evil. It just seemed to me that your comment was a bit extreme and I thought you were one of her idol worshipers. The books are about witchcraft, and though I enjoy the books and even write HP type stories and collect HP items, I realize the books have normalized witchcraft and introduced an entire generation of children to witchcraft. Are people that don't like the books really easily deluded and in need of being locked away in an asylum? Maybe we should just let them have their opinion.

    • @IHaveNoIdeaWhatsGoingOn
      @IHaveNoIdeaWhatsGoingOn 6 років тому +1

      I'm letting them have their opinion, unfortunately. Maybe, my comment from a year ago was harsh but brainwashing followers and children to believe that a book is evil, is worthy of being put in an asylum. At least I didn't wish death of them. They're allowed to like the books, never said they couldn't, but burning and brainwashing are totally different.

But one weekend in my sister's new house without network and nothing to do, i have found harry potter and philosopher stone in my sister's wardrobe and thought "well i got nothing to do anyway" and start to read it. Almost instantly, the book really captivated me and I spent the whole day reading it. In the end I asked my sister if she could buy the rest for me, and she did so with pleasure because she was also a fan of the books. So Harry Potter changed my life and made me love reading. Okay, so I get it if Harry Potter's not your thing, but _burn_ them? Hate them with burning (no pun intended) passion? That's unacceptable. It's good literature! If you're going to burn a book, then at least have a reason other than religion.
    Anti-Potters, you'd better watch out. Sleep with one eye open. Set up guards outside your house. Put protective charms around your room. The Potterheads are coming, with wands and torches and torture contraptions. You can't burn Harry Potter. He can just protect himself with magic. Nice try, Muggles, but you can't burn the Harry Potter Generation down with just a small fire. You need a roaring inferno burning stronger than our passion for Harry Potter for that.

      Emerald Daffodils In this day and age book burnings have no purpose except wasting your time. I always wonder what they (the ones who burn books) see in this fruitless activity. Its not like they are going to wipe the written word from the face of the earth by burning a few books they get their hands on (with profits still going to the author by actually buying books). Why can't they see this simple thing is beyond me.

    There is a type of fairytale magic that is fanciful and obviously not real (incantations just made as nods to Latin words).
    People's unease about exposing kids to black magic is totally understandable, but people need to understand that magic in the Harry Potter universe is almost like technology (a wand operates just like a vacuum cleaner or a gun would), and that JK Rowling basically uses magic as a plot device to teach readers about friendship, sacrifice, and love.

      I think oftentimes, people see something being extremely successful to the point that it scares them. As a Christian, their reaction to the books makes no sense to me at all, and as Kinglovesyoutodeath said, the books use a magical world to promote really great qualities and teach such profound moral lessons. I'd guess that the vast majority of people who burned the books did not read them and it's sad that they never got to see how Harry Potter inspires people to be better

    Besides an enduring story that is Harry Potter, JK Rowling gave us single mother's a gift beyond measure...HOPE. Although we will never be billionaires, we have hope that we can use our own gifts to provide a living for our children, which I bet was all she wanted at the time. I am speaking as a single mother who at a time was homeless or jobless, struggling day by day, year by year. But I can succeed, because when you are at the bottom there is no where to go but up. For that I thank her.

Freddie Redmayne is playing him. JK is writing the script, David Heyman is producer. There isn't going to be anything related to Harry, but it is set in the Wizarding World.

I don't understand those crazy people who are calling these things like "witchcraft" and it has to be forbidden, but crazy people are everywhere :-) I have all the books and movies and i will buy the new movies when they come out too. And my children and grandchildren will see the movies and read the books too. :-)
    My friend also bought all the books (as a set) for his daughter. I love the potter books and the world and i really thankful to J.K. I hope she continues to wright some books in that same way. But let's start now with Fantastic Beasts and where to find them :-D

    Franchise isn't a great word as people think for Harry Potter. It's more of a saga telling a story, not some chain of endless segments stretching out on one original idea for the sake of money and merchandise, granted that's what Potter has made.
