My father drove a Rover 3500 SD1. We used it extensively to travel from The Netherlands, through Germany, into the Austrian Alps for the Winter Holidays. One night, as we were returning home, I was in the front with my father driving. I believe it was on the German Autobahn. Suddenly the car started bucking and trying to get away from my father's control, but fortunately the 3500 had power steering so he managed to keep it driving in straight line till he could stop the car. We found out the car had suffered a blow out. Thanks to the power steering, we came off well. Not that long after, I read in the newspaper about an upcoming Dutch music band, who were also driving on the highway, suffered a blowout but then their car had careened out of control, over the head before it crashed into a barrier. All inside were killed.
SD1 made other boxey shaped rivals seem out of date. I can see why it won european best Car of the Year 1977. it's pity it was unreliable when first started otherwise it would have been best seller.
It looked like the Granada that fell into the quarry had no engine. May had been an ex-taxi base Consul made to look like a Granada. Furthermore why did the Granada driver drive it over the quarry edge? Going back meant facing the Volvo pursuer & if the Granada followed Steed & Purdey would have been trapped for sure.
Blame red Robbo and his pack of hyenas for the demise of the British motor manufacturing ! 🤔 I know in all honesty the industry as a whole was poorly run by it's owners .
The problem with Rover at the time is they had some amazing designers and concepts but then given a fiver to develop them and passed to a pissed off workforce
Seemingly the Rovers used for The New Avengers and The Professionals were so unreliable the producers switched to Ford. Also the Jaguar XJS used in Return of the Saint was so temperamental they needed a spare one on set all the time. This was a dark era for what used to be two of our most successful luxury cars.
Just shows how way ahead of its time Rover were in 1976! WOW!
I love how that Volvo 240 crashes into a stone wall and comes off best.
I want a new Rover SD1 in the portfolio of Range Rover, please. The best Car of the Year 1977 !
The later Granada MK1 is the best looking now. I had an SD1 and used to go to work in the bosses 350SE
I'm surprised the Rover's doors didn't fall off already

You never gonna chase Rover. Never!
Don't think I'll bother checking the DOT site to find out if that Granada is still around...

The director threatened him that if he didn't drive over the edge, he'd never get a job in television again.
lol. I love the SD1 but thank fuck TV has advanced since this bobbins.
growing up, we had the '79 2600 sd1. Slow and underpowered, but spacious and luxurious with a fantastic engine and exhaust note.
The Volvo was and still is a tank but I think the rover sd1 has rovers V8 in it and some power to leave the Mercedes and the Volvo eating dust.
Hot as all fuck, not the Granada

Rubbish. It's because Leyland wouldn't supply the cars. Grow up and stop reading comics you fool.
What episode is this from?
tyre Pilot the lion and the unicorn. The fourth episode of series two.
Thanks
The SD1 would have overheated and had a sulk long before that Merc 😂
The SD1 was a write off after this 3 minute scene.
But worth a lot of money now. You couldn't afford one then and you certainly can't now prick. Stop liking your own comments it smacks of desperation
