  • With campgrounds closed right now, many people are looking into dispersed camping as an alternative. Understandably many people are concerned about the safety aspects of camping remotely on public land. It's a sad fact that there are criminals who will prey on campers and hikers out in the wilderness by intruding on and raiding campsites, breaking into vehicles or worse. Hopefully some of these camp security tips can help you stay safe and feel secure out in the wilderness whether you are living in an RV full time or out for the weekend tent camping on public lands.

One thing I do when I go camping by myself is bring two camp chairs and set them up around the campfire, that way if someone rolls up while your sleeping or whenever it gives the illusion that there's at least two people.

Hi Donnie, new sub here. The Second Amendment has been a pretty touchy subject to discuss openly these days and has caused even family divisions. I am a proponent for the rights to bear arms but I am more concerned about the variation of laws from state to state regarding transporting firearms across the country. I am a van lifer at age 74 having sold, donated or given away almost everything I owned. Now I travel for pleasure wherever the compass takes me. I left Virginia and traveled cross country and never encountered any situation where I felt threatened; however, I kept one of my firearms just in case and stored away properly separating the components. I also have other means of protection. An important element for my safety is using common sense and gut feeling. I taught survival in the military and those two aforementioned elements have kept my ass out of harm's way.

If I'm able to have my car right by camp (as opposed to hiking in), I'll park my car with the headlights pointing toward my tent. That way, if I hear something in the middle of the night, I can hit the unlock button on my key fob and my headlights will turn on and illuminate the entire area around my tent.

I spent over 30 years as a police officer in a major city. My advice is to ALWAYS carry a firearm, whether you're in the city or the wilderness. Whether you're in a crowd or alone in the middle of nowhere, better to have and not need than need and not have. If you don't need it, nobody even has to know to know you have it. I agree with Donnie completely in that you need to be comfortable with the weapon, so don't neglect training. My wife and I always boondock and seek out there areas that are way off the beaten path. We've on occasion run into some sketchy characters out there. I've never had to draw the weapon but it's a comfort to know it's handy. I've worked literally thousands of violent crimes during my career, and have NEVER had a victim say: "I'm so glad I didn't have a gun". Have fun out there, and be safe!

I’m a single, 59 y/o female and I always have a firearm with me when I’m camping. But I’ve been shooting my whole life and can break it down and put it back together quickly. I’ve taken safety courses and practice frequently. If someone isn’t comfortable with a firearm, it can be more harmful to force themselves to have one.
Love your dog! One of my favorite breeds. Their separation anxiety issues make it necessary that they be with you almost all the time but if you can do that, they’re amazing to have.

Firearm safety is easy. Kids learn it. Once it's there, it's there. The minimum skill/practice level to defend yourself safely is very low. Taking courses are far from necessary. It truly is common sense, other than specific firearm operation which for the vast majority of guns can be explained or figured out with fundamental knowledge.

A key element of Safety anywhere is situational awareness- being in touch with your surroundings/situation can often prevent trouble before anything begins to develop. Bear spray is a very useful deterrent- having it handy (and being able to deploy it in a few seconds) is a good alternative to firearms. Dogs are a deterrent too, and even a dog who appears friendly may be very protective when he understands you really need help.

I respect how you worded the firearm debate; it is a personal choice. After working in law enforcement for 15 years now, I wish I could go back to not knowing what goes on around us. I have friends who backpack in some really rough areas (land wise) and never carry anything. I love how safe they feel. In the mountains of Northern California thousands of people go missing or are found dead from the marijuana growers. For this reason I carry what they carry, an AR-15. And yes, I have known people who had guns pointed at them and told to leave. I also know people who have had to use their firearms to protect themselves.
Being said, it is a choice and we need to respect everyone else's choice to carry or not carry. If you do carry, know your weapon and the laws, and be prepared to use it if you pull it out.

camping was so different when I was a kid in the 60s. For one thing, you rarely saw RVs other than truck campers, or little pop ups. We tent camped a lot, had a truck camper a few years, then went back to tent camping. Other campers were respectful, quiet at night. We would often be visited by deer, but rarely any large predators. In 19 years of camping, the only bears I ever saw were raiding the garbage dump in Yosemite, back when they used to have a big garbage dump there. My dad always had a weapon stowed safely away and I doubt we even gave it a single thought as to necessity. Only once did I see my dad kind of get nervous about something and dig it out from where he kept it. Campgrounds were cheap and rarely full, except in the larger touristy spots. The peace and quiet of the mountains I still think of as the best nights of my life.

A lot have mentioned this point, but I've also observed it while hiking. I notice that most of the weirdos I meet in the outdoors are always closest to the parking lot, or in areas that are most accessible. I have quite literally never had issues in areas where I'm either in a tent only area, or far enough away from the trail where even hikers typically don't bother you. The further from the parking lot you are, the better the people often are. Chances are they're doing the same thing you are.

True, but around the Seattle/Puget Sound area, it's getting a lot more dicey in that regard. I was alone, camping on the primitive side of Baker Lake a few years aho, camp well back, when I heard a couple arguing about 70, ft away. They were setting up camp and noticed me because their dog was loose and was visiting me. They called him back and later I walked by the trail. They had been cussing and arguing for an hour. As I passed and said hi, I got eye-balled up and down pretty hard by a red-eyed dirty young guy and his equally dirty female companion. That's when he saw my fully exposed semi-auto and I could see the look change from what may have been "opportunity" to "screw it." I was at least 35 years older than they were and maybe looked like a mark. They left a half hour later and went back towards the parking lot - 4 miles away.

My two items are a good , solid , wood hiking staff and a large can of Bear Spray. The Bear spray is rated for Grizzly Bears and will go out over 30 feet. The benefit is it's a non lethal item but you would not think that if you were on the receiving end of it. It's good for any warmblooded critter , 4 legs or 2. My dog is an excellent warning system but so far, I cannot tell whether she is smelling a deer, javalina, human...if she refuses to go forward, then we turn around and my hand rests on my sidearm. Good video and agree, if you don’t want to take the time to be proficient with a firearm DON’t have one. Another bit of advice, if you are going to have a firearm for safety join USCCA (the insurance policy) this is a good idea even if you have one at home for personal protection. In today’s society if God forbid you ever have to use that gun for self defense right out the gate, right or wrong, you are automatically the bad guy until things get sorted out. USCCA tells you what to say and what not to say when law enforcement arrives and lawyers in your area to contact because you are going to need one. One more point, when you remote camp, during camp setup, always be parked pointing towards your exit. If you need to leave in a hurry, just leave. Forget for now all the material things you may be leaving behind, they can always be replaced.

Just my choices, but i will say to anyone who carries, if you are not prepared, in your mind and intent, to defend yourself to the maximum and the knowledge of when it is that situation, don’t carry. And by the way, those 30’ wasp/hornet sprays are very effective to an intruder. Whether it is animal or human. and not lethal.

The deeper ya go the cleaner things are typically. My thoughts on a gun are, I always have a large hand gun but, this is for protection from bears and cougars more than anything else. My advise to those new to to camping would be to start on UA-cam and get some knowledge, then start out in the paid campsites to learn to use that knowledge before getting so remote there is no one to help in a bad situation. Even it the Midwest plane states where there aren’t many trees can be dangerous if your not minimally prepared.

It's been about a year since this video was posted but I still hear conversations regarding firearms when camping. I typically just listen except when I feel that it's necessary to advise campers to not carry if they don't have appropriate training. It's a very personal decision.
In my case, I spend a good amount of time in the woods in dispersed camping areas. To be honest, I try to avoid improved campgrounds. I do carry but not for the risk from people. I frequently go to locations where the risk is more from 4 legged critters or slinkies with fangs. In my many years of camping I have only needed to resort to my fire arm twice. Once when I was actually chased by a badger and the other when a bear was intent on occupying my camp. I had a bear bell and bear spray. Neither impressed the bear. I carry a Taurus Judge in .357 Colt. The revolver also accepts .410 shotgun shells. When in the woods I keep the 1st two chambers loaded with the .410. I fired in the air away from the bear and that got his attention and he left.
The point is, that my firearm is a tool configured specifically for my woods/wilderness travels. Oh yeah, if you choose to carry be sure to know the local laws regarding carrying firearms. For example. I sometimes find myself in the Sierra Nevada's in California. I don't carry in CA. The laws are just too wonky. Besides that, it's my understanding that the Taurus Judge is illegal to possess in CA. So, do your homework.
If you are camping in improved areas and are considering carrying please make sure that you get proper training and follow the laws while traveling and while at your destination.

Safety is very simple for me, I am prepared for any potential situation that may arise when I am in the middle of nowhere and when around people. All it takes is that one/first time and I do not want to be unprepared. Situations can happen with animals, people, weather and even a medical emergency. Just be prepared for anything an always have an exit strategy/plan for all. I have seen many fights, arguments and police being called at campgrounds; mostly because of alcohol intoxication. In the wilderness, my biggest issue has been with a huge ass mosquito this one time and he didn't do very well at the end!

I camped thru a 2 day blizzard, last February, without heat. (Start up the car, for 5 min, to change cloths…) That way, I can lock the doors, if I want.
I don’t carry a gun, EVER… If you’re keeping it loaded, you get digging thru your gear, “bang”…
I keep a hatchet, covered with cardboard over the sharp edge… I wack someone with that, the edge is cutting thru…
The other thing I do is have motion sensor lights, around my camp. If someone comes in, I have warning…
I ran into a big grey wolf, in April. After that, I got bear mace. I keep that handy now, but, NEVER keep a gun, especially loaded…

Hi Donovan, new sub here. I've been hiking, camping, backpacking, now van living since age 10...now 74. Only once did I feel threatened and it was an encounter with a mountain lion in Arizona. All I did was raise my hiking poles and shouted. It turned and left me alone. However, it's the two legged animals I'm more wary of and using common sense and gut feeling helps me to avoid trouble. I now live in a van to travel wherever the compass points. I do carry a firearm safely secured just in case. I've traveled almost 4000 miles in the last two months and have yet to feel like I needed to use any kind of tool for protection, even when boondocking.

I do carry when I'm out in the woods alone - which is most times I go. Like you, I have had more instrances of unpleasant people around than animals - except for one bear encounter that was very dicy. But, he walked away and I didn't have to shoot him.
I usually arrive into some area early, so I'm almost always the first person there. That said, number one Action Item is to pick a good solid, safe backstop, and shoot a rapid fire barrage into it so anyone within earshot knows I'm there - and armed. A couple more times during the sday to keep them aware, and another barrage just before dark.
If I hear a vehicle crunching around nearby, I sling arms so they see me if they go by. A friendly wave is exchanged and that's that.
"A Strong Fence Makes Good Neighbors."
    1) it's good practice, and 2) the message is obvious.

made an excellent suggestion below about parking your car with the head lights facing your tent so you can illuminate the tent with the press of your key fob. That's a good one since your tent is what you are trying to protect most at night, and that would enable you to see an intruder as you came out to deal with him...if it doesn't scare them off immediately. I've also heard of people setting trip lines (fishing line is good) around the perimeter of their camp. If you use 4 of them rather than one continuous loop, you can attach cans or bells on each and know what direction someone is approaching from...20' or so before they get to you. I'm not paranoid, but I'm not in denial either. A little prep allows me to NOT spend my time worrying about that sort of thing. Anyway, thanks for the great idea, Hitch11. I'll use that one.

And always, always, always carry one or more filled backup magazine and some extra ammo. That may sound excessive, but if you do encounter a situation where you need to use your firearm, statistics tend to show that you are going to end up firing several rounds. This is mostly due to a reduction of accuracy caused by fear and stress in the heat of the moment. It's not uncommon to miss with half or more of the shots fired.

First time i heard that with coolers, were they just any coolers or expensive ones or ones with beer
If someone needs food i will just give it to them if i have some extra to give
There are many times i leave my cooler outside my car, unless i feel it was very unsafe there n there was thieves in the area i saw with the thief look n energy
All the times i camped n that was many times, whole summers at times, i only had one camp chair stolen n someone stole my friends backpack once
But like 3 times someone opened my tent n searched for something worth stealing, but i had nothing in there worth stealing, once they went through my duffle bag in there

Use a lock for your hitch and other things. Putting solar lights up, around the top of your camper or van, is a determent too. Also, you can always, hit the hazard button on your remote control to your car, that will make enough noise to get people up and looking around.

A taser, air horn and whistle are other good defense tools. When away from your site, put dog bowls out, even if you don't have a dog, and/or leave a radio playing. Have exterior lights, with motion sensors. There are also satellite phone devices for requesting emergency assistance or even send text messages. Carry a well stocked first aid kit that includes a snake bite kit. Wear gloves, boots and a hat. Also, a good walking stick/staff can come in handy.

I'm going on 67 and have been camping in mostly Washington State my whole life. RV, backpacking, truck, tent - every way but in a hammock. Things have changed. Anyone under 40 probably hasn't noticed, because theyare living in the New Normal, but I have. IMO, the changes have been much for the worse, and a couple of my LEO contacts have confirmed it: The "Homeless Industry" in the Seattle/Portland corridor has spawned a secondary wave of persons who are the worst of the worst, and have been "exiled" from the encampments in the cities. Where do they go? To the woods.
In the last 10 years, I have encountered some very sketchy individuals - and couples, or groups of three or more - "camping" in dispersed areas that used to be empty or occupied by like minded people who were open and friendly. I make it a point to be seen - and be seen armed if they move in after I've set up. Of the three incidents where that has happened, all three persons didn't stay. Other spottings were a ways off from me, and I didn't have any problems, but I eye-balled them good and hard on the way past. I have a certain look, I'm told. But, I'm not the tough guy I used to be, so I take no chances.
Anymore, a firearm is standard equipment when I'm alone, or with just a small group of maybe two or three. I don't have bear spray, but that would be a good start, too.

And know the state CCW reciprocity laws where you are going. And have fun camping! The farther out you are, the less wierdos.

To go unarmed into a wilderness that contains wild animals and potentially wild people is extremely naive and careless with your own life and the lives of others. You never need a gun - til you need it. And there’s no worse feeling than that sinking feeling in your stomach when you suddenly realize some shit is about to go down - and you and possibly your loved ones (who look to you to protect them) are completely unarmed and helpless.

I am a BSA Scoutmaster and we camp at least once a months with the youth. We always have at least 2 trained adult leaders (BSA minimum requirment) and usually 3 to 5 with around 5 to 10 youth. We rarely camp in regular campgrounds doing mostly dispersed camping or back country camping like the AT and river trips, well past cell phone range. The only thing that hasever worried me are critters of the2 legged variety and those of the no legged variety way out in the woods and all of us adult leaders keep some form of protection to keep the youth safe.

GREAT VIDEO! You presented the issue of firearms perfectly. Personally, I choose to carry for my own safety. A medium-large dog is the perfect camping companion for safety. Bear Spray is great to ward off nuisance animals, but not aggressive animals determined to do you harm. Like you say, people are the biggest problem when camping. I too like to go deep distancing myself from all the shenanigans. I've never really had any bear problems with Black Bears. However, Grizzly Bears are born with a "chip on their shoulder" and will help themselves to you and whatever you have.

Those who travel multi-state would wisely study and memorize the various laws as each state has rules which could land them in jail with a felony record many miles from home. I have watched several full timers being greeted by police and all have been friendly fans. However, it only takes one statement of carried firearms witnessed by one not so friendly officer to ruin one's life. Everyone should be careful about statements or displays which may be legal when and where expressed but criminal in another state.
