I’m Dutch, so never made a conscious decision to move here. I did however make a conscious decision to stay.
As a kid I was always very interested in living abroad, even went to college for tourism, hoping I’d move all over the world.
But decided in the end that it’s better to stay here, and just travel abroad on vacation. (Completely ditched tourism for finance). Sure, it’s not perfect here, but I live a well balanced and safe life.
One factor I appreciate about where I live, South Limburg wedged between Belgium and Germany, is that I can go to either country within 10 minutes. 😅

      Hi Joy ce,
Thanks so much for sharing your own experience. The Netherlands isn’t perfect but it’s a beautiful country to live in.
Where you stay already sounds so cool. You would have the Dutch mountains (or sand dunes🤪😆😆) close by too. I’m hoping to visit someday🤗

Why did you not want to live somewhere else for a while? Surely that's a broadening experience.

@@snowbear1877 like I said, I love to travel abroad, which I can easily do. So I get to broaden my horizon, while also living in a comfortable country.
One of the reason I didn’t move around, was that I also decided to not work in tourism. The reality was that it was grossly underpaid.

Every time I come to the Netherlands with my partner who is Australian like me but of an Indian background, the Koninklijke Marechaussee examine his passport with a magnifying glass as though it's a fake. No where else in the world have we been treated this way. It's pure racism. My partner can see the hatred and suspicion in their eyes. If he were blond with blue eyes they would not treat him like this. There's a lot of racism in the Netherlands.

I am a software engineer from Peru and considered to move to pursue grad school in Europe, I have visited for short periods of time the US and Germany, and being honest, despite US has a big Latino community, I think I will be more accepted in Europe. Your first point really reasonates with me. I think, especially in this hard times, is so necessary to live in a place where we will be accepted and not judget by our race. Sometimes talking with my mom, we argue bc she thinks this topic is not necesary and is better for looking for cities with safety streets, but mental health is so important in this process. I was terribly unhappy as a kid in the Netherlands. I was badly bullied by other kids as well as by my teachers. They were sadistic.
I did have some friends at school and sometimes ate in their homes but Dutch food was so terrible it made me sick. There was one dish I had at a school friend's house that made me vomit. It was witlof, a vegetable they boil, boil and boil some more. Then, when it's all slimey and grey with all the vitamins destroyed, they put some processed ham and cheese on top and eat it. It's like eating bitter slime.

The food was terrible and he had to get on his bike and cycle to Belgium for a decent meal. Also there was anti-Semitism. And anyone who came from an English speaking country was humiliated and put down by the academics.
As someone from Africa, surely you must know the Dutch invented Apartheid? And that it has its roots in Calvinism and "Verzuiling", ie the pillorisation of society, where everything is organised and grouped according to pillars.

    • @snowbear1877
      @snowbear1877 2 роки тому

Also, another horrible thing Dutch boys did and the teachers stood by and did nothing. At the swimming pool, they would forcibly hold your head under water till you nearly drowned. They used to call it "koppie onder". It was very dangerous. The worst thing was that the teachers and other adults did nothing. It was always done to weaker, more vulnerable kids.
To this day, I remember it whenever I go to a swimming pool.
Thankfully in Australia we have beautiful beaches, not the oil-drenched brown water of the Hook of Holland. What a dump that was! And yet, to the Dutch, it's beautiful! They must enjoy oil slicks, pollution and a cold brown sea.

@@TessaRietveld Not as emancipated as you think. For instance, Australia had suffrage (women's right to vote) about 20 years ahead of the Netherlands.
Women have much more freedom and independence in Australia than in the Netherlands. My mother nearly died from an illegal abortion in the Netherlands in the sixties, when abortion was still illegal there.
In 1972 I returned to Australia and at age 18 had the right to vote. In the Netherlands it was 21.
Also I don't know any single women like me who own their own home in the Netherlands.
It's true it's a safe country, but so are many other Western countries.
As for being rich, to us as Australians it seems quite poor. The houses/flats are tiny and have only one bathroom for a whole family. There is very little space. The food is quite limited. For instance, I couldn't find a basic ingredient list ke ricotta cheese, or garam masala. Nobody even knew what it was.
On the upside, I love the beautiful cut flowers which are cheap. But then, here in Australia we have gardens and pick our own flowers. Of course you can buy in the supermarket and florist but more expensive than here.
I also like the idea of gezelligheid. Do people still sit in a circle at birthdays with one little cake pet person?
I find the Dutch men very condescending and arrogant. They talk down to you by which makes me cross.

I disagree. The Netherlands has a terrible history of colonisation. They are the architects of the Apartheid system in South Africa and left a terrible legacy in Indonesia. More Jews were sent to the gas from the Netherlands than any other European country.
It's also cold and wet with very little natural beauty or space.

I won’t defend the Netherlands past or try to say that the Netherlands has had a wonderful history. @@snowbear1877 Lol, an Australian complaining about Dutch colonization in the past while you actually ARE a colony. The way the natives were (and often still are) treated by the Australians makes the Dutch look like saints. In Indonesia and our other colonies there was no big stigma on mixed marriages right from the start and the Indos (mixed Dutch Indonesians) formed a larger group than the Dutch in Indonesia. In Australia aboriginal children were taken from their parents by force so you lot could show you how 'civilized' you were..... :') Apartheid was invented in South Africa long after the Brits (Australia was British then too) colonized the Boers (and put them in concentration camps). The Boers had good relationships with the Zulu. So it's more fair to say YOU invented Apartheid than the Dutch. Learn your own very bloody history before lecturing others about theirs. Because if you knew your own history you would never write a comment like that.

Well, I'm a Nigerian expat in the Netherlands. In the first month I seriously considered going back to Lagos.
For me it is crazy lonely, and since it's my first time outside Africa, I'm not used to the individualistic lifestyle here.
Let's face it too, people are friendly here, but they're not your friends. You'd mostly find it easier here as a couple, or even as a student, but as a working single person, goodluck breaking into Dutch friend circles. Expat communities helped me.
People are eager to help when you need, but no one cares to the level of friendship, like back home - that warm community.
Then there's the cold - I'm glad it's not as cold as some other places, else I'd have been in Lagos by now. There's also the cost of living - my monthly rent here is more than what I used to pay in Lagos yearly. Yes, the salary is better, but for half the pay, I would gladly remain in Lagos.
Also, there's the language barrier. English can only take you so far. My first time in the supermarket, I bought eye pencil remover instead of lip balm. Ya, everything is labelled in Dutch, and the street signs too. So, goodluck having a comfortable life here without learning Dutch.
In summary, it's not bad here, but for half my pay I'd gladly return to Nigeria. Also, as soon as things get even a bit better back home, or the first signs show, I'll be on the first flight back home.
