Cause we're tiny and we usually complain about everything that ISN'T right in our country. Through these videos, I've learned a lot about my own country and how it is being viewed. I think it's interesting to us to hear people boast about our small country, when we have yet to see those good sides of it ourselves. For me at least.😂

@@namitales Exactly. We complain a lot about our country, our government, the weather et cetera. It can make the Netherlands look worse than it actually is. It's good to sometimes watch these kind of videos to rediscover that our country isn't so awful after all, and find our appreciation back.

i think that may also be partially because the netherlands usually got confused with germany a lot. In a lot of 90's movies a dutch character would be introduced who only spoke german and that was like... so frustrating for some reason? 😂 we are getting more acknowledged rather then swept under the rug

Fun fact, bragging about money and designer stuff can kind of be looked down upon, as it is seen as superficial. When people get a compliment on their stuff, clothes etc. they love pointing out how cheap/easy/normal it was, as it makes the compliment seem more genuine☺️

Depends a bit on what strata of society you're from. And herein lies a truth even most Dutch people are not that conscious off. Yes, Dutch society is rather egalitarian but there definitely are classes around education, income, where you live and even ethnicity (which is of course very controversial). As you say yourself, wearing expensive clothes with big logos is seen as trashy. Why? Because you actually associate it with lower social classes. This shows that you are in fact conscious about class. It's all very subtle and not often discusses in public like in British society, for example. But it's there.

Another thing often misunderstood about Dutch directness is that it is only in the moment. Germans are equally direct, but if they tell you you did something awful, you know the will hold that against you in the future. Not in the Netherlands. If you bought awful shoes, we just tell you the shoes are awful, and than it is gone. Over. Done with. History. Fresh start. THAT is unique about the infamous Dutch directness. Many anglo-saxon and german people cannot understand this. They think that if you get such a direct remark, it is not only about the shoes, but also (a bit) about you as a person. No. It is about the shoes, nothing else. I agree that the same words can be rude. But then you hear it in the voice, the same words then spoken sharply, or sarcastically. That is true.

    • @josphineogugua
      @josphineogugua  2 роки тому +27

Thank you so much for clarifying this. I personal appreciate the Dutch directness. I’ve come to understand that most times it comes from a place of sincerity and nothing more 🤗

As 100% Dutchman I have to agree, on this comment. We say something direct. But than it's out of the system. Like he said, it's history already. We can say to a female friend, I don't like what you have done with your hair . It doesn't mean I stop being your friend anymore. Just an honest opnion

As a dutch person who's lived here my whole life, I wanna thank you for your video ♡ I agree with almost everything, yes all our education is paid for until you finish high school. Right now im in university and it is quite expensive for someone who's only 20 and pays for most of it myself ;) Again thnx for showing me all the reasons I should be gratefull for where I live in the world. ♡♡♡ (especially as I queer person, I feel really safe here as well and couldnt be happier :) 🏳️‍🌈) Everyone over here is equal and in the eyes of (most) dutchies it doesnt matter if you're royalty or homeless, everyone matters ♡

Thank you so much Robin for your comment. I can imagine that the school cost may be a bit too much for younger people who are just starting out life. I must say weldone for handling it like a boss🤗. I also heard about some student loan which you won’t repay if you complete education within 10years. Have you considered this, cos I understand sometimes it may get overwhelming to pay up all these bills and still go to school.

Hello Josphine, thank you for your video. It is always nice to see my country through someone else's eyes, if only as a reality check. I am very pleased to hear that, in your eyes at least, as a country we are doing ok. Of course, whatever someone says about someone else, says a lot about themselves as well. This video tells me you are an outgoing, sociable person with a very positive view on their surroundings. So yes, you are more likely to get positive experiences.
Of the many interesting takes that you touch here, one thing I would like to comment on. You say that Dutch society is very family-friendly. I totally agree, raising my kids here is awesome. So, a family-based country. But I also get to hear time and time again that Dutch society is highly individualistic (me, me, me, I want, I think, I feel...) as opposed to societies where one is a member of the group first, and an individual second. I hear this about many African and Asian societies. I wonder if your view on Netherlands being a family country might partly come from your Nigerian background that you took with you, sort of as a contribution to your environment? (I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud)
Anyways, I've found another rabbit hole to dive into, and will spend the near future binging your videos lol. Keep up the good work.

It’s weird because usually I’m more attracted to warm cultures in Latin America and south of Europe but there’s something about the Netherlands that stands out from the rest of the “cold culture” countries. Hi Justin. It depends on the location of your school. I think Den Haag is a cool city, with really interesting locations to visit. It also has a very big open market (largest open market in Europe)… but it will really depend if you will be studying there or in a city close by.

Love the video! As a Dutchie I do feel I should mention that the tax system is not quite as high as you mentioned in your video. The highest bracket is 49,5% for the share of the income you have that is above 69.399 euro's in 2021, everything below that is against 37.07 %. Even if you have an annual salary of a million euros, the first 70k is taxed at 37 %. This is called a progressive tax system, or in dutch: schijvenstelsel.

      Hi Martijn,
Thank you for pointing this out. And also for breaking the tax system down🤗
I think our concept of high may be different though😆. I most times compare the tax system to countries that I've
Lived in and it's higher than those.
But I think this is just me and my experience. In comparison to other European countries, it's not that high indeed.
