  • UPDATE: Some of the parts used in this video are no longer available. A community member has provided updated instructions HERE: www.simhubdash.com/community-...
    In today's video, I'm going to show you how you can build your own DIY Wind Simulator with variable fan speeds based off your in-sim speed! In this Part 1 video, I cover the hardware and software configuration and go for a test drive to see how well it works. In Part 2 I'll refine the design with better fans (linked in the parts list below and finalize the installation in my sim rig).
    A quick note on the fans. I've linked below to the fans I recommend (and have ordered for Part 2) based on their ability to provide maximum airflow and still fall within the maximum current tolerances of the Motor Shield. I've seen other people use Marine Blowers as fans. i do not recommend you do this unless you know what you're doing as they exceed the current limits for the Motor Shield.

    Will is a blessing and a real gem to the community. I am beginning to see the vision he has for sim-related content. I think it is only fair to hit that JOIN button, this man does a lot.
    Very soon his rig will be the benchmark of what a high-end setup should look like, with the immersion and all. My new goal is to someday have the opportunity to have a drive test in his cockpit, just to have a feeling of what it's like.

    Great minds think alike. Will, I'm working on this exact same thing. It's been in the planning stage while I've been trying to talk the wife into it. She thinks it's ridiculous and has been a hard NO. You have once again saved to day with your very timely video. So I'm moving ahead into the construction phase. This video has answered a lot of questions, as I to am looking for the immersion effect of driving open wheel cars. I have a new fan that will be mounted outside of my house in a mock dog house. This dog house idea I came up with will solve a couple of problems. 1. Noise, the fan I've chosen is a 110 volt, high CFM, 6" inline blower. At full speed it can move 500 CFM of air and makes a bit of noise. I plan on using sound dampening material inside the dog house. 2. Dust Free. the 6" duct work will come into the house using a large Dyer vent and will split into two three inch flex duct work, so that it can come into my rig just under the top deck, where each will end using a auto A/C vent. That way I can control the direction of the airflow. At top speed the air extincting will be traveling at near 120 mph. That is after I've regulated the blowers speed down a bit. It is capable of 200 mph, but that seems a little excessive for the dinning room. LOL. My point is, at those velocities anything pulled into the air stream would be very dangerous indeed. So the dog house will be a very large air filter. It will need to have enough filter area to supply the fans CFM intake requirements. I will send you a link to some photos as things come together. It should be insane. Cheers.

    I haven't read all the comments but I think someone mentioned higher rpm fans. I did the same as you and started with some old case fans that weren't powerful enough. Moved to some cheap bit coin mining fans. They still didn't impress but what did it for me is to decrease the pwn in the motoshield setup to around 600 (play around with it) from my understanding, fan speed is controlled by pulsing the fan motors on and off. At 1600mhz, it is pulsing so fast that the motors barely get time to work. Try this before changing fans. Also, if you do change Fans, I recommend trying this for a stronger effect. It also heavily reduced the whine from the fans. Sorry about formatting, typing on phone...

    Good news, today I got a real adafruit motorshield v2 instead of the broken clone, soldered the headers and voila - everything worked instantly like a charme.
    But holymoly.... the 4000rpm fan is wayyyyyyy to much. Even with only 10% of power in Simhub it makes enough wind! Danger of conjunctivitis!
    So if I do the math a 400rpm would be quite sufficient and I‘m wondering if the arduino and the powersupply could have been smaller as well. :)
    It happened to me a while ago almost the same: when I planned and installed 4 bass shaker and a 4 channel amp (for my „racing seat“ of course) which can shake my neighbors now as well.... a little bit oversized as well.

    Hey m8 I used the separate PWM feature in simhub to get it to interface my fans. The issue I have is that my fan spins only after reaching 120kph and it's at full speed. The fan never ramps up linearly. Any solution

    • @bertram-raven
      @bertram-raven Рік тому +1

      Yes. The set the minimum speed for the fan so it is moving when you are at 0 kph. Then add 5% to prevent the fan stalling. Use the "cabin air" feature which keeps the fan spinning when not racing to determine the slowest speed your fan will handle. All fans have a minimum speed. PWM fans will not move the fan until it reaches a safe minimum demand. Also, PWM fans have a maximum pp/s above which the fan will stop! You will need to determine the minimum and maximum values for your fan (and arduino) and then go 5% over the minimum and 5% under the maximum. Note: this behaviour is true of ALL PWM fans to protect them from damage. Further, if you push the demand close to the 100% mark, the fan will soon shutdown to prevent the internal electronics overheating. PWM fans move air well but ironically have no cooling for their own electronics.
      Finally, you may find you cannot reach the maximum continuous RPM for your PWM fan. The reason is one of a: the spec sheet is lying - this happens a lot, b: the Arduino cannot produce a clean PWM signal at the rate required to hit the maximum fan rpm. Again, this is very common. The maximum I have been able to achieve with a true 5000rpm PWM fan (they are expensive!) is 3600rpm because the 16MHz Arduino cannot switch the signal any faster with a clean rise/fall in the signal. It would need to provide a 43,000 (forty-three thousand) on/off signals per second to hit 5000rpm. A 16Mhz Arduino can only reach 23,000 pwm cycles per second reliably. Pushing it any faster makes the signal "muddy" and so the fan shuts down to protect itself.

But .... nothing happens when I press the test button. As soon as I press the button in quick succession, both fans start running. Now I have started iracing via simhub. But nothing happens at all. I can hear the adruino making noises but the fans are not going to run. Do you have an idea what it can be?

    Has anyone figured out if you have to cut the power cable like he does? Or just plug it in? Seems he just cut cos the power supply didn’t fit? Love to know reason why he connects that way rather than simply plug it in. Thx

    • @mmatthews90
      @mmatthews90 2 роки тому

      There are two parts to the Arduino: the uno and the motor shield; both of which require power. The motor shield obviously requires more power since it is supplying the fans. He is supplying power to the motor shield via the 12v adapter and is supplying power to the uno via the USB.
      If you don't want to cut the power supply, you can always wire a 12v female end to the motor shield.

    Have you thought about using regular table fans? Just set them on their highest setting and connect a SSR with zero-crossover switching to regulate the speed. You just need a simple PWM signal to regulate the SSR. 😙🎶
    For streaming just get a dead cat for your mic 😂

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  4 роки тому

      Good suggestion. I did look in to that option. Probably a bit complex for the video though. And far too noisy for my usage case.

    • @RubenKelevra
      @RubenKelevra 4 роки тому

      @@boostedmedia why too complex? It's just an AC fan and a relay which need to screwed in between the plug and the fan. Instead of running the full power for the fan thru your board you just need a PWM signal based on the speed. Everything smaller than table fans has way too less power to be convincing than you drive 200 kph 😂
      If you put a helmet on, you can put the mic inside, this should give your eyes a protection from the wind and a much better representation of actual driving.

      @@boostedmedia is this seriously and issue? I think there are a lot of channels out there making content about electricity. Just do a disclaimer and just show the final product, so just a wire running into a grey box and out again, and two wires running to your microcontroller.
      The point is, it's actually much safer to use a SSR since they have an optocoupler on board, physically separating the high voltage side and the low voltage side. And you don't have to deal with high current DC power, for a big fan, which is actually also more prone to errors than just using the AC cable included with the device you're using.

    buddy you have the wrong shield and the wrong fan going. try a monster moto VNH2SP30 Stepper Motor 30 amp along with a 12 volt dc motor with a couple small table top "clip on style" house fans. of course with a the arduino will work very well. make sure you have a 12v -24 volt fuse box to not over amperage the circuit. fine tune and you will have a very very powerful wind sim. oh by the way you will need a more beefy power supply to run this behemoth and im using one of two 12v 30a Dc Universal Regulated Switching Power Supply 360w on my motion rig. Enjoy :O)

      I went with a similar spec fan (but not exactly what Will recommends), but each fan has a max of 3amp, too much for that power supply and the Motor shield. Going to look at that monster moto, but if I want to try the desktop fans do you have an example of the type your are talking about? Can I use a couple 12v dc fans (like th kind you can plug in a car cig lighter, wired to the moto board? Higher amp 12v power supply. Where should I install a fuse?
      What I built runs but with both fans I get power drops at constant high speed, with one fan it works, but the v2 board says 1.2amp per fan 3amp total max, so I don’t want to leave it that way, even with heat sinks on the v2.
      And thanks, Will, your video was so easy to follow! I did have to solder the connection pins to my Motor Shield, but a fun little project!

    • @schoonerlabs4656
      @schoonerlabs4656 4 роки тому

      Using a brushless RC motor could be done but it's a different process over using just a motor shield. You'd need an ESC to control the motor which then can in turn be driven off an arduino like a servo. The sizing of the motor for the proper kv could also be some trial and error as that changes the speed and torque values and how big a prop/fan you can run. Also RC usually runs off 2S-6S and up lipos, so depending on the motor selection you may need to push more that 12V and at higher amps than a standard computer fan would do.
      Another option might be to use bilge blower fans for boats or actual racing duct fans but may be on the loud side.
      Just some feedback and thoughts.
