Since 2015 I've bought one from each year, with the exception of 2018 and 2019 as I feel the product was lackluster during those years, lacking in value, and the commanders of the decks from those years just didn't interest me. Now in 2021 with the Strixhaven-themed precons, every one of them has caught my eye as being interesting and potentially fun to play and upgrade, with a very good value in reprints alone (at time of reveal). I'm glad they went with foil-etched instead of the regular foiling process because my 2020 Commander foils are already curling (2017 and earlier are still perfectly straight). The 40 dollar precons are designed to be somewhat balanced around each other and to be played against each other. Now they are supposed to be more of a board game to be bought as 5 and less to be played individually. Thats also why the big precons cost more, because they need significantly more playtesting. The cheaper ones barely do.
Lorehold is my first pick as well. I think that one thing I really like about those decks is the fact that while still going for mecanics that exists in their color identities, they are trying to do something different from the usual pre-constructed decks of those colors.

What's hilarious is that I never even considered buying the 20 dollar boxes, because I assumed that they were watered down and for new players. I'm part of the problem...
Yeah it does feel like that doesn't? But actually in a way we are correct about that. In these strixhaven versions the quality IS much greater than the $20 versions. Soooo technically we are right to feel that way.
I bought 2 just because I missed a bunch of commander staples that were included and added up to, i dunno, 15 bucks or so? decent investment and a couple of nights of fun with the precons. Well worth it.
Reap the Tide is a powerhouse without any upgrades. My brother dominated just using that deck for weeks. I got my own deck now and its gone 2/0. I honestly felt bad the first time I won with it because it beat everyone else at the table so bad.

@@acollectorslifeforme4201 Are these Strixhaven Commander decks worth keeping sealed as a case? I want to play MTG commander in the future, but currently I do know anyone to play with,.

Wow, this was altogether a very positive review. Even some of things the Professor tends to criticize (Amazon distribution, being set on the same plane, foils, etc.) ended up working really well. I'm not very interested in the School of Mages (the flavor doesn't resonate with me as much) but I'm stoked about how elegantly they handled the mechanics (and I'm super excited for the Mystical Archives!). That said, I feel like wanting (or even expecting) the price to drop from ~$35-$40 to ~$20 because a $20 deck was released is, in a way, getting an inch and taking a mile (not really a mile; more like a couple more inches, but that's the idiom). The price of one product is (IMO) not as directly related to the price of another, and you could make the case that the price difference is a premium for cards that are more complex and/or demanded more resources to design. Even so, $40 is still pretty steep, so I'd still be hesitant to pay the full price for one, and I wouldn't complain at all about a price drop.
I bought the lorehold commander through mailing with my old LGS and its arriving this monday. It was $15 more due to the shipping costs, but so worth it to help a store I loved.
I would be interested to have the Professor show us how much it would cost to buy JUST the new cards printed, for people who pretty much have all of the reprints.
You summed up exactly how I'm feeling about these. I've never been drawn to all 5 in one year before (I got 1 in 2018, 1 in 2019 and 2 in 2020) in the way that I have been this year and may actually end up getting them as a battle box to play with friends.
My MTG playing friends got me into Arena over the pandemic. We met up for the first time in ages this weekend, and one of the guys bought this full set to give everyone a deck. I picked Prismari Performance because I liked the idea of the magical conductor/orchestra, and while I definitely found I needed help getting through my turns when all the multiple-repeating-interlocking trigger effects started going off, I must say I thought the deck achieved its theme wonderfully and I had an absolute blast playing my first game of paper magic.
My LGS just closed this month and now I have nowhere to go to buy cards. The best place I can go is this massive store about 35 minutes away from me. This has really affected the way I think about products I will buy. I have missed the prerelease and I'm not sure if I will buy a commander deck. I really want to build gyome, master chef and I'm considering just buying the non foil extended art version. What do you guys think? Would it be better for me to buy the whole deck or get the single non foil gyome instead
I think you really have to consider how much of the contents you're actually going to use. I've been feeling more and more like buying the whole deck is usually not worth it because I'm a long established player and I already have most or all of the good reprints. If there's only one or two new cards that I want, I'd rather just buy those separately. But if you think you can make use of a lot of the cards in the deck, it might be worth it for you. Even if 40 is a reasonable value for what you get, it's still 40 dollars.
Without it no-one is going to make MTG cards in amounts for 100,000+ customer base. Also this is the wrong product to do an anti capitalism speech. The Commander pre-cons are arguably the most generous under priced products WOTC's ever releases. MUCH better than grubby cash grab from standard sets that rotate. Standard rotation is "capitalism bad". Commander not so much.
So, I did a search on UA-cam for ‘Tolarian any other comment’ and the first result was the one from a couple years ago about your regrets. I feel like there’s some kind of irony there.
As some one who doesn’t play blue/red I picked up the prismari performance and it’s a blast to play with. I thrown in some upgrades already and I can honestly says one of my favorite decks. Plus I like the classical music theme!

Professor: Type 'Tolarian' and any other word in the search bar
My hands: Tolarian goose
I bought the lorehold commander through mailing with my old LGS and its arriving this monday. It was $15 more due to the shipping costs, but so worth it to help a store I loved.
“held hostage by my hobby” really hit me a little too hard 🪦
thanks for making these kinds of videos prof. been a while and was planning on buying these. Great review as always! :)
Bonus points to Professor Brian for using the word, "whinging".
Usage of that word has increased dramatically ever since the Hound said it a few times.
good to see the prof happy. this is in the right direction for mtg products fs.
I would be interested to have the Professor show us how much it would cost to buy JUST the new cards printed, for people who pretty much have all of the reprints.
This is some reeeeally encouraging news, AND from what I've seen online / with my own foils from pre-release, the quality SEEMS to be improved!
I saw, I clicked, I watched.
Veni, tetigit, aspiciebam
Veni, Veci, Viewi
I saw, I clicked, I read, I liked, I watched, I liked
I just built Breena, the Demagogue and I absolutely cannot wait to Make Magic Great Again this weekend at Commander Night
You summed up exactly how I'm feeling about these. I've never been drawn to all 5 in one year before (I got 1 in 2018, 1 in 2019 and 2 in 2020) in the way that I have been this year and may actually end up getting them as a battle box to play with friends.
The professor is always fun to watch.
I'm taking AP Language and Composition right now, so when he said the words "rhetoric" and "ethos", I got the chills
Subscribed immediately! Thanks for the super review! The Lorehold Commander Deck becomes my first commander deck ever. I am so excited. 🤩
Finally my man! I waited on this video before i pre-order some commander decks!
Thanks as always.
5:29 Same Prof, same 😂
Looking forward to this video. The PO came earlier tho. Happy that prof approves this product. Makes me feel very excited waiting and a winner!
Proxy all singles you need.
Feel like the man behind the camera had a monitor with one of Profs loved ones held captive. All good, Prof. I got your extra vid.
“Capitalism, Grrr!” Made me laugh way too hard
I love that you showed my two favorite colors in this video
Makes me want the orzhov and sonic deck for me and my bros
Despite capitalism, I'm just going to start all my sentences with "Despite capitalism" from now on
Without it no-one is going to make MTG cards in amounts for 100,000+ customer base. Also this is the wrong product to do an anti capitalism speech. The Commander pre-cons are arguably the most generous under priced products WOTC's ever releases. MUCH better than grubby cash grab from standard sets that rotate. Standard rotation is "capitalism bad". Commander not so much.
I already ordered a few of these decks but I was super excited to get the profs breakdown of the decks
So, I did a search on UA-cam for ‘Tolarian any other comment’ and the first result was the one from a couple years ago about your regrets. I feel like there’s some kind of irony there.
I am excited about the WitherBloom commander Pre con.
Professor: type tolarian into youtube search thing
Crazy Eyes: i thought we were watching scoobydoo
As some one who doesn’t play blue/red I picked up the prismari performance and it’s a blast to play with. I thrown in some upgrades already and I can honestly says one of my favorite decks. Plus I like the classical music theme!
prof's hair is getting grayer every video... :c makes me sad
They're natural blonde highlights
When you have a love hate relationship with magic the gathering, it tends to make you go insane slowly. This could happen to any of us at anytime. It's been a great life.
