That spaniel is awesome. I don’t think I have seen a Boykin before, it looks and behaves similarly to the working cocker spaniels that we have here in the UK. I love your inductive retrieve technique too, the umbrella is a master stroke!
The Boykin Spaniel is named after Whit Boykin who first started crossing other Spaniel breeds to create the Boykin. I'm from Devon UK and have a Sprocker Spaniel, not yet recognised by our Kennel Club but he is a cross of the Springer and the Cocker which makes a Spaniel more like the original field Spaniel before they were separated and bred for their size. I absolutely love a Spaniel and appreciated watching the Boykin. Thank you 😊
I have a Boykin/ English Springer Spaniel mix but she looks like a pure breed Boykin except for a small white patch on her chest and is slightly bigger. She’s 38 pounds.

Hey Stonnie! Love your videos. I’m a guide dog trainer of GSDs and a herdy dog person but am looking at a field lab for my next dog. Love watching these videos. I do a lot of platform work for other sports but know nothing about hunting/retrieving. Do you ever use platforms to tighten up the retrieve in cases of a less retrieve-to-hand oriented dog like the Boykin? Thanks for what you do!
What a great video!! Can’t wait for part 2! The camera man must be a surgeon because that camera never moves or shakes. I’d be like a earth-quake if i were filming
I 100% agree with the heat coming off the fur of a black dog. I have a black lab/shepherd mix and we hike a lot, I now use the bArtic light therapy shirt by CoolvioLife and it is amazing. Keeps her nice and cool like she is in the shade while not in the shade. You can feel the difference.
I have an American Field Lab and she has a very strong natural hunting drive. We often walk with a group of people and their dogs on some of the back trails and she HAS to be in the front. Can't be in the middle and certainly not the back.
Stoney, what do you do to keep ticks off you and your dogs? I'm in northern Virginia and man this year is bad . I've used diatomaceous earth, essential oils ( don't judge me) , some crap from Tractor Supply that had citronella and pyrethrin in it, still picking those little b@$t@rd$ off my JRT's. What do you do or use on your dogs ?
Our dog recently passed away. She was 13. I’m going to be looking for a hunting dog soon. I’ve been really contemplating between these two breeds. They each have their own pros and cons and individual quirks but I love both of them. The English Labrador Retriever and Boykin Spaniel are the two best hunting breeds in the world. I’ve had the opportunity to duck hunt and dove hunt with both and they each did a great job. I say English Labrador Retriever because I prefer them over American Labs. We had an American Lab. He weighed 100 pounds and he was extremely hyper. He was trained to hunt but we unfortunately could never take him. A hyper 100 pound dog is not a good thing to have in a small hunting boat.
When American cocker spaniel? they are hunting dogs too people have them as ornaments in their homes but they also working dogs. and decent watch dog too.
awsome job in training and explaining how defferent breeds work . ¿do you ever use Ecollar? what do you think about using Ecollars? BTW, love your videos and puppy adventures.
Stonnie, I am going to purchase a lab for hunting and have heard Pros/cons for each American and British. Do you have a preference/suggestion for one over the other?
OK, every time I see a Boykin video, I tend to believe that they are derived from an American Water Spaniel. We had two AWS and this dog acts just about the same.
While enjoying this video we realized that our 2-year-old black Lab, George, was also loving it. He watched the entire video. We posted a photo on Instagram to let other Labrador owners that you are much more entertaining than Dog TV. 😉 You rock! (#nickadventurelab on Instagram)
Found out my lab has dysplasia… genetic issue. Sad news just hope he’ll be alright. You recommend I keep him alive ? A trainer recommend I put my puppy down 😔
@@Domyfz450 get a second opinion and give him some time to grow if he is not in pain. His bones are still settling and growing. Don’t put him down unless a licensed vet does an X-ray on him and says there is no hope. Hope this helps you.

@guins99 labs are great. I was having fun. Flushing birds in the field springers are impressive. At home, yeah, they are a handful. Need lots of room and exercise.

Can you show the same video comparing the British lab to your American field lab side by side thanks? Great videos Uncle Stonnie!
Thanks Stonnie!
Thanks so much. For many reasons I was interested in a Boykin but thus vid showed me this breed was just a little more independent than i want.

That’s a very good question.
Probably flea and tick treatments...
