  • (update 2018) This video was not uploaded to promote lift surfing or gaining access to lift shafts. I've removed all other videos that may incite others to follow this activity.
    'When' someone is killed on top of a lift trying to follow other channels, I don't want MY channel involved in the media frenzy and investigations that will follow.
    A life is a life, things become very serious when one is taken away whilst trying to follow what we do here on youtube.
    Imagine if that was someone very close to you? Then, it's not fun anymore, it's not funny, it's not clever, it's just irresponsible.
    #########
    I recorded this video in 2013 but never uploaded it. However, as it's connected with a movie that I have just uploaded for Urban Harvey Exploration about lift keys, I thought I'd make it public.
    This is dangerous stuff. Here I'm just showing you that, if you stand on a lift car roof just TWO of the dangers. There are many more dangers though, so please don't mess around with lifts.
    WARNING:
    Don't attempt anything shown in this video for your own safety. When things go wrong, they go wrong very quickly and if you are not in control you're going to be injured or could even die.

      Old lifts are amazing to me. They just have that feeling, but the talking ones are almost impossible to spot in my country (I think that they are not annoying, they just say the floor number), but maybe, in the future there will be some kind of smart AI lifts that will recognize speech and do a lot of other things, including making the passenger go 0-FULL ANGER in just a few seconds).

    Another safety tip: If you get stuck in the elevator itself and it's halfway off the floor when you pull the inner door open, DON'T try to get yourself out! When the repair tech or fire department comes, they will make absolutely 105% sure that it cannot move, before they start guiding you out.
    Without someone to verify the brake is engaged and the power to the motor is cut, it's possible the elevator could start again, you could get squished! If you were climbing "down and out" there's also the gap below the elevator that you could fall into.
    Usually if you're that far off the floor for climbing out to be hazardous, the interlock will prevent the outer door from opening anyway.
    Even if the elevator IS lined up with the floor, if the computer detects that the brake isn't engaged it generally won't open the door, to prevent people from getting injured or killed. Forcing the door open overrides this. Frankly the voice (if equipped) should start saying "please let go of the door and wait for help, self-rescue could cause injury or death"

    • @lucasthings
      @lucasthings 6 місяців тому +1

      Wrong on first tip. In old lifts you have to gain access to motor room and spin the motor wheel, On new lift you have to use the free fall button until its level with floor, then open door with logic cabinet

    One misstake, you must check if the shaft door protection works before getting on top of the lift ( when you send the lift to go down wait till it closes the doors and wait about few secs but make sure to open the landing doors before the lift got to the floor you sent it, if you do it correctly, and if evrything is functioning properly, the lift shoud do an emerg.stop)

      Could I please ask how you obtained this information (are you an engineer?). This is quite important as if you have not been professionally trained then you are passing on information and I don't know where from. Also, the information is irrelevant as at no time did I get on top of the lift. In fact, the video is about NOT getting on top of lifts.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 років тому +3

      Sorry about my previous reply, because I kind of knew already where you obtained the information and it wasn't a very friendly reply.
      I have had to remove your 'next' response because I don't want the person mentioned on my channel.
      This person is making assumptions based on his experiences which is not something I recognise. I respect people from the industry who have been trained over the years and witnessed the consequences of performing risks and what can go wrong.
      I'm appalled by some of the "supposedly safe" content uploaded on that channel, especially with kids surfing lifts which is naive, irresponsible and if any of those kids came to harm then I cannot even imagine the trouble he would be in with the parents of these kids (AND the police).
      So I'm sorry, but I won't be taking ANY advise from that channel.
      Anyway, thanks very much for watching and have a nice evening :) Matt

    Are blue doors lifts usually Otis? I remember when I was a kid there was a shop me and my family used to go to that had an old lift that I always wanted to go in but my mum was always saying "we don't need to because here's an escalator". My sister went in it once when she went out with friends but by the time I got to go back there, it had been upgraded to a new one.
    I remember it having light blue doors that one went inside the other as it opened, there was a small window in the left side door (left when seen from outside) and they seemed to clatter and squeak when the doors opened.
    From what my sister has said, it had square metal buttons which lit a dim (possibly red) square around the button but went out when you took your finger off, the floor was black and the walls were a dark metallic grey (possibly patterned steel from her description), the light had a fluorescent bulb and had a cover that was flush with the ceiling. I think it might be a Thysenkrupp now but I want to find out what the original was and if there are any left that are nearing their end of life date.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 років тому +4

      I had a few locations that I can think of with different doors, but were probably the same manufacturer. Years ago, there was a lift with red doors in an old cinema in Aylesbury that I can remember. Dimly lit inside and I think it had a carpet.
      The answer is, there is no rule regarding door colours as it depends what the customer wanted at the time of installation. Doors can be painted any colour I guess.
      The parts of a lift that can help determine who the manufacture was are: doors with windows (each manufacturer had their own style of window and position of the window) and of course the buttons and floor indicators.
      Thyssenkrupp I think is from the 2000s and used to be just Thyssen before that (1980s onwards). The square metal buttons you are referring to might be these...
      ua-cam.com/video/3NvQI2HJgXA/v-deo.html
      Most of these buttons don't light up (bulbs blown I guess) but these were very common throughout the 1980s and were used by a lot of "generic" companies.
      Where is the location you are talking about?
      Problem is, once lifts are removed then it's all about trying to find someone that knows that information. People don't really care a lot about old lifts, and wouldn't notice the level of detail we are talking about.

    • @charlotteclarke4665
      @charlotteclarke4665 8 років тому +2

      It had a door that half slid inside the other half, the window was one of those that is about 4 inches wide and 12 inches tall (only big enough to see if it's on that floor). I think the one there now is a KONE so not sure if the old one was by the same company but it has doors that split from the middle now and they are silver. I will try and get more details off my sister but she would've been about 12 or 13 when she went in it.

  • @xmsre

    You didn’t even verify safety or inspection ! when you send the lift to the floor below break safety with your key, then check the lift stops, then turn on inspection, close the doors and call the lift, if it stays, you are good. Also, when moving the lift for the first time, go up a little first, if you go down, you risk not being able to reach the door rollers to alight from the car top. Not a good demo, but you’re lucky to have a V key 🔑;)

You always should stop the lift before it is on the floor below you, so you can still open the door of the lift Shaft if inspection mode does not work

    Don't rely on any safety features! The fences I have encountered are often flimsy pieces of sh!t. I do believe that showing the dangers, and how to do it safely is important, otherwise the internet is flooded with people who think putting "my videos are not a tutorial" is enough to stop people copying, because if someone wants to go on top of a lift, they will likely do it anyway, so better that they do it somewhat safely than recklessly.

    • @mrmattandmrchay

      I disagree. If people want to take the risk, then it's up to them. But if they were attempting to follow a 'how to surf a lift video' and were injured or killed in the process, then let's hope it's not yours that they copied. Uploading a lift surfing video shows them things they may find interesting and then want to do. How many kids do you know that do everything you tell them? Sometimes, telling them the dangers may have the reverse effect and make them want to experience a bit of risk and adventure. Such as this...

    There was one part of this which i disagree on: "they will confiscate your key". No they won't. That's illegal. You should NEVER give someone one of your possesions just becuase they make you out to be in the wrong. You have purchased it, it is your item, they cannot take it from you. That is called stealing. Even if you were using it in a wrongful manner, even if the manner was illegal (which lift surfing isn't), they legally CANNOT take it.

      The only persons on top of a lift should be people that have been trained and are aware of the dangers AND HAVE BEEN TRAINED on the dangers.
      Lifts are very heavy machines. There are lots of things that can get you injured and killed, and I people on youtube are showing this as a FUN activity, and PLEASE don't get involved with them. The serious part is, we only have one life and things can go wrong very quickly when on top of a lift.
      Dangers are: Entrapment, being crushed against something that you've got too near, decending counterweight, falling, touching something electrical - electric shock. The thing is Adithya, during the training of being a lift engineer the trainer would tell you many more things that even "I" am not aware of. Some lift engineers have told me about trained lift engineers being killed doing their job when they thought they were safe.
      When ever I feel inclined to film on top of a lift (which hasn't been for a LONG time now) I put a tripod on it.
      Just wondering how old you are? Please don't consider doing anything inside a lift shaft.
      Have a nice day :)

      @griffster17 5 років тому

      Sounds like you really don’t want us to do it. And I do understand what you’re saying. But it is people’s rights to make the decision to take this risk. But what they need to understand is: it is a risk that they are taking. And if you decide to take that risk, don’t put anyone else in danger. It is very important for people who are making these videos, to have a bit in the description warning people of the dangers. And telling them not to copy what they see without prior knowledge on how to do so safely. I think that this is a very important thing and is done frequently on my favourite UA-cam channel which will remain unnamed. I am glad that you are giving this warning, many lives could be saved.

    have you ever come across a burnt out lift motor or one that is about to go bad?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  4 роки тому +2

      Good question, but first lets see what makes up a motor. It's basically a load of electromagnets powered by electricity. When power is applied to them, then yes, the wires that are coiled around and around to 'make' the electromagnet will get hot. It normally relies on the turning of the motor to create a fan that cools them down. A lot of larger motors have a separate fan mounted to them that is connected to a thermostat - if the motor is hot, the fan runs. So in extreme cases, if the motor had power and it never turned, then the wires could heat up enough to start burning through the insulation around the wires. Then you'd get some smoke. After enough insulation had burnt off, then you'd end up with the winding wires shorting out, which would blow a fuse in the cabinet. The other thing to consider are the bearings that keep the motor turning freely. The more wear and tear, the more fraction and there is another potential source of heat.
      So in answer to your question, the answer is no. A motor burn out is very rare and would result from years and years of lack of maintenance. But it's unlikely that a motor would just suddenly turn bad, there would be plenty of opportunity to see a motor turning bad before it did. Also, old motors are reused on lift modernisations as well.

      Good to hear that you have some kind of connection to engineering. Please do not mention the word "safety" and "that channel" in the same sentence because they don't go together. For my job I regularly work with lift engineers (proper, trained lift engineers) for installing card readers and cameras in lift cars AND low level (inputs and outputs) and high level (ethernet) for controlling lifts from the lobby card readers (enter the building - swipe card - calls lift X, sends it to floor Y of the cardholders normal floor - destination dispatch). You may not see the videos because I try not to mix my job activities with my hobby - it's a bad mix (also the lifts are modernised and I don't have a lot of interest in them).

      +mrmattandmrchay Can you access the bottom of the shaft, via elevator?

  • @DAVESOUNDSMATAMP

    NOT RECOMENDED! .. Your "Incident" will be logged in the Lift Control computer AND possibly reported to the building management software!. No one should ever enter a lift shaft illegally.

      +DAVESOUNDSMATAMP "logged in the Lift Control computer AND possibly reported to the building management software" Yes this is right, however, how many of these "door lock opened/safety loop opened" Events actually get investigated by an dedicated engineer? In a shopping centre with 24hour security on patrol where the control room staff recognise this condition from the management software, likely. Most of the time, the Event is sitting in the list with hundreds of other events which are waiting to be acknowledged, whilst security are on their iphones doing other stuff to keep them occupied. I'm in the trade and seen it time and time again! I've actually watched lift alarms coming up on the management software and pointed it out to security who are doing other things. Even Otis REM, by the time the Event has filtered through to the people that need to know, you are long gone! I do put warnings in every one of my videos about the dangers, and this video highlights more dangers of doing so.

      +benobve Ben, couldn't have said it better myself! I wonder how many lifts Otis monitor? Thousands! If just 1% of these generated a "safety circuit open" condition, that's going to be a whole load of alarms in the alarm stack!! And how many of these are security breaches rather than genuine faults that need a tweak. You'd be very unlucky to be found out by the lift monitoring system. You are more likely to be caught by someone that saw you enter.

    Are you an elevator mechanic to be doing this?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 років тому

      +DieselElevators Not officially, but I've been with elevator engineers in the past, both from doing my youtube channel and I work with lift engineers from time to time during my job. I am an engineer and understand H&S, electrics, electronics, I train other engineers also, but I'm not officially a lift engineer, no.

    Lift surfing? Firstly it was metro train surfing! I think it very stupid for one not experienced in lift design and maintenance to ride on top of cabins! Other things such as filth, God knows what diseases would be lurking on the roofs of these cabins!...
    Holding on to the traction cables is not good either. The natural skin oil that is secreted by the fingertips is acidic. This can begin to corrode the cables and slowly weaken them!
    Leaving the landing doors open also presents a hazard to the public at large as they may not see these opened doors and inadvertently fall into the shaft leading to quite obvious consequences!
    Inconvenience. Using the lift as a fun toy (surfing) ties them up from other people who need to make use of them. Frankly, I never heard of 'lift surfing' before, is this really a common problem in UK?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 років тому +2

      Not really, but it depends who is doing it. Kids with no experience or no regard to H&S, people that have no responsibility for their actions ARE a problem.I'm mentioning no names here, because it just seems to encourage them when mentioned
