Horowitz performed Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Concerto in Russia in his youth....if we could only find a recording of that too !

@@MaScalo4508 Yes !…… he felt that it was not well written for the Solo Part during the Big Melody at The end of the 3rd movement . He felt that the Chords were a big anti climax for the Soloist ( I rarely disagree with Horowitz on anything but I really feel that Rachmaninoff’s plan was perfect as written ) . During my years at Juilliard back in the 1970s ( when I received my Masters Degree ) I had the great luck of becoming a friend of The Great Horowitz. I used to take walks with him around his home on East 94th Street in New York City. I asked him endless questions about the Great Pianists and Composers. I have over 20 years of Correspondence with the Maestro that I have saved ...letters, notes etc. I was astounded when a year after his passing I received a Phone call from his Secretary telling me that Mr. Horowitz put all our Correspondence in The Vladimir Horowitz Archive In Yale University !…………… I truly believe that he was the greatest Pianist that ever lived. Best Wishes

I’d love to see your notes, unfortunately I live in Germany, that’s rather far away from Yale…

@@alanbash2921 I would love to know what he thought of Karajan, musically. I have a sense of what he thought of him as a person, but musically if those two and the BPO had've done the Rach 3, it would be the final statement on the matter. I think I once saw him say, in an interview, that he thought the BPO was the greatest orchestra "conductor doesn't matter", but I'm not sure if it's my memory playing tricks on me or not.

Oh god, thank you for this information! And also, I'm a bit envious that you and the maestro were friends! I wish i knew him...

It is my understanding tempi were much faster among the turn of century pianists than is now the case: considered more “eloquent!” They were also more individualistic than now, perhaps because they were closer to the Romantic era than more recent post-modernist musicians.

Emil von Sauer made his own piano reduction of this? Love this recording one of my first Horowitz 78rpms - My copy sounds much worse!!! The pianism always amazed me. Now I listen to a digital-CD version.

One of the best interpretations ever, although Horowitz made the orchestra to go with his pace, especially in the Rondo!
