I am close to finishing Claire Tomalin's very fine biography of Thomas Hardy. I will definitely read more of her. She writes with a mixture of deep critical intelligence and sympathy for her subject.
@@JoeSpivey02 I read it for Jane Austen July, and it at least somewhat approached the question you asked early in this video. And it is an enjoyable read, too.
That would be the logical answer to such a decision. Tomalin's thesis was an old one but a gold one; Austen was a remarkable and underappreciated writer who pinched the cheeks of her nieces and nephews whilst penning her peerless works!
I want to discuss your poll regarding God. As with most polls much depends on how you word the question. I would have to say no to a sky god, or one who micromanages. But yes to the God at the end of you nose.

You might enjoy Love and Marriage in the Age of Jane Austen by Rory Muir.
I knew you'd have an additional recommendation Hannah! 😜

I've heard mixed things about Tomalin as a biographer, but I still want to try something out to judge for myself.
This will work wonders if you're not scared of a little academic specificity!
A lot of Austen biographies seem to spend a lot of time on her relatives, maybe to add content or evidence to the arguments they are making.
