You saved my ass man, got this as a christmas gift and tinkered around with it too much to the point where it wasnt running smoothly and having some issues. I managed to get it back to its factory state with this guide.
Thank You very much, I had one day with Steam Deck and I had to do a rest because an update popped up and then my Slider for the Display Brightness disappeared… Just followed your video and my Steam Desk is ready ..
there few things people need know when doing this, when loading the usb it will stay on boot logo for several minutes, be patience, once on linux screen choose reimage install and wait until it finishes the reading/writing operation on the last line on terminal you will see there is something going on even thought it looks stuck, then another windows will poppup and choose proceed and it will finally restart and its done!!
I followed the steps all the way up to just past selecting the bootable media. Now it wont go past the logo screen to where I can select reimage. Waited for nearly 15 minutes with no change. Dont know what is going wrong. This is a fresh never used Steam Deck that I swapped out the SSD to a brand new larger 1tb SSD.
I’m also having this problem instead of going directly to the desktop to reinstall I keep getting all these mounting files and then the screen completely goes black
Works great true step by step. No unzipping needed. Just follow his steps I needed it after I updated steam deck software everything was in portrait mode.
Hello I'm trying to update the SSD in my device. I have swapped out the SSD, and flashed to a USB 3.1 USB stick. I then restarted the steam deck by holding down Power + Down Arrow, and received the boot menu, where I chose to boot to the EFI device. At this point the device gets stuck on the Logo and will not proceed. I have waited upwards of 2 hours to no avail. I have tried the following: - Force restart the Steam Deck. Press the power button for 12 seconds or until the Steam Deck shuts down. Then, press and hold the power button again for 2 seconds to turn it back on. - Boot into the BIOS. Hold the Volume+ button and press the Power button. In the BIOS, navigate to the "Boot" tab and make sure that the SD card is set as the first boot device. - Boot into BIOS, proceed to Power, switched to battery off mode - Tried using a different SD card. Tried 4 different cards, micro SD, flashing both from Rufus in Windows as well as from balenaEtchter in MacOS. - Re-flashed the image to the SD card about 4 times across 4 devices. - Made sure that you are using the latest version of Rufus. - Used a high-quality SD card that is compatible with the Steam Deck. - Formatted the SD card as FAT32 before flashing the image. - Tried using a different USB port on my computer. - Made sure that the Steam Deck is fully charged before flashing the image. I honestly am at a loss. I've tried everything. I simply can't get past that damned logo!
So I’m at the boot manager and whenever I click on my usb drive with the recovery data on it. It doesn’t boot directly to the desktop like yours it starts installing all these mounting files and then the screen goes black am I the only one having this problem
You are a life saver. I will implore not to install windows 11 or any windows at all. That shot fucks with d steam OS. Brooooo I lost all my games and data . Thank you 🙏 You are truly helpful. I didn’t get it at first I guess it was the memory card I used. I had to improvise in a very crazy way. Thanks Love from Nigeria 🇳🇬
Most likely it does not detect a boot option (aka bad OS or bad SSD). If you don't care about the data, just reimage it like i showed in the video. If it gives you any problems or doesn't detect a drive to install it on, then you may have a bad SSD
The first part was easy but after selecting my country, time zone and connecting with my wifi it just goes installing and the logo just keeps turning its been like that for half an hour now any idea?
I have dual boot on my steam deck. Windows is working fine but some software that I cannot fix on steam os is acting up. Can I just erase steam deck partition and reinstall steam os leaving my windows partition untouched? Ty.
ok so i installed my 1tb ssd and did everything but when I got to choosing the language timezone and wifi and then it sends me to an installation but its stuck on the installation and keeps saying error and retrys
I have a problem, I'm stuck, I don't know what to do... my steam deck is blocked when starting the logo and my steam deck alternates between logo and black screen with writing at the bottom left: "rebooting into firmware". What I just said concerns the reboot of the steam deck via micro sd SandDisk, which is read without problems. Without an sd card, the boot at the logo is just blocked, that's why I tried to reboot my steam deck to reinstall steamOS, I'm lost...
@lapfix so im upgrading my ssd once my steam deck arrives. do i have to also reimage or just download the os? i just downloaded the image thing off of the steam website and did the portable drive thing with rufus so its ready to go. i was just wondering wether i have to reimage the whole thing or just download the os
While updating my Steamos was gone after it powered off even gone from the eifi boot manager along with refind. If you want to get it back i just reinstalled Steamos instead of Reimage the OS. I also got my files intact.
Anyone have any issues with a bad reinstall of steamos? I went windows for a while and now after reinstalling steamos I have issues with the light blinking like it's out of power even when it's plugged in or fully charged. Just off and on
@@lapfix now if someone could modify recovery to work on a normal computer it’s based on arch so I wonder if it’s possible to just get steam recover to work on normal computer hardware by modifying with normal arch

I had problems loading websites or downloading any size file when the steamdeck is docked/in desktop mode and has an external monitor plugged in and yet when it's not in the dock or hooked up to a big monitor, the download speed are ALOT faster!! there must be some problem between the steamdeck and the dock... hopefully this tutorial fixes my download speeds while docked!!!
I need to know how to boot the usb on my Mac book!! There are no tutorials for this anywhere..😭 I followed the instructions on steams site but could not get the software they suggested to work at all!
The idea is to create the installer as a bootable. It would be a similar process to my previous video showing how to make bootable installers : ua-cam.com/video/QO3GoMfqOzc/v-deo.html Just use the steamos installer instead of the macOS ventura i showed
What are you doing with this video then? You installed Windows 11 on Steam Deck, thus turning it into a useless dummy, like GPD Win or Asus ROG Ally, for much longer than you could restore SteamOS, which is done in just a couple of minutes and literally with one click. I will never understand the logic of Windows adepts
How do you like your Steam Deck?
bought it days ago but still can use it , its not boothing up the install process since the day I bought it ,
I hate it

is it normal for it to be on black screen with mouse cursor for a long time
Not all the time, but could be slow to load up. Try rebooting if taking more than 2-3 minutes or force shutting down by holding the power button

does reimage steam deck also deleting partitions ? because i have at the moment dual boot …. and i wanr back steam os
If you clean wipe the WHOLE drive, it will. Otherwise you would need to select just the linux partition as a dual-boot means you already have 2

Steam OS is what comes with if you buy a steam deck, or is it steam's version of windows?
do steam games work as well as if it only has steam on it?
I have just done this in prep for when my deck arrives but downloaded the non portable version, does that matter?
It doesn't matter, just less clutter from the portable version. A clean install right away keeps the junk away =)

Yep, our method does a complete wipe
I got a weird issue where everytime I download the OS, Rufus ends up creating alternate partitions on my flash drive. Is this supposed to happen, or?
i had this too and i still dont know wether this is okay or not

I dl steam os through rufus. Plugged my flash drive in deck and dont get option under boot manager.
I got windows 11 already installed is it anyway can keep my saved data before I have to reset
Can I not do this from the steam deck itself ?
This works with a Micro SD Card too right? I was stuck on the Deck logo, so I think this is my only method for recovery.
What if non of your buttons work ca you use a USB keyboard?
