Thanks for your comment, David! Did you visit in Sydney or Melbourne?

I just realized you must have been a crew member, not an Australian visitor. Sorry for the mixup! How long were you on the Buchanan?

@@brucewebster5998 I was assigned to the Buchanan from September 1961 during commissioning, until August 1964. I was just googling around today looking at the evolution of DD classes when I came across this video. I had never seen it before. Are you related to Captain Webster?

@@dibjr I am his youngest son. My dad passed away in June 1999 and is buried at the Naval Academy with my mom, who passed away in September 2011. I have all my dad's letters to my mom that he wrote her during the various deployments on the Buchanan and, of course, many pictures from that time. I was only 10 (4th grade) when my father took command of the Buchanan up there in Bremerton, but I have many memories of that beautiful ship as the Captain's kid. We lived in Loma Palisades on Point Loma during that tour and used to watch the ship head out for exercises from the lighthouse on Point Loma. Mom would flash the car headlights as the ship made its way past the lighthouse and Dad would blow the ship's horn in return. Those were special days.
