Due to the style snd techniques that Mick Gordon encorporated in DOOMs OSTs, many fans have taken to dubbing this style of music "Argent Metal", which is fitting in my opinion, since Argent (more specifically Argent Energy) is a relevant term in the DOOM games. I think it's nice that this style has it's own little niche name, since I would say it has a few elements that make it a bit different from your typical metal music, one of which I would say is a shifted focus in the type of musical technique/finesse it displays. It doesn't so much feature advanced practical/instrumental technique, but instead relies heavily on the quality in sound production and editing (especially the synths and the, uh... home appliances) and the intricate use of tension/buildup, as you pointed out. If you end up listening to more music from DOOM, you may also notice that a great portion of it is simply meant to convey an uneasy feeling and a sense of lurking danger to the listener (or the player, in many cases), not so much as The Only Thing They Fear Is You, which just puts you in full-on chainsaw bloodshed mode. I would say the track Rust, Dust & Guts shows that very well. I'm not saying that none of these elements can be found in typical metal subgenres or generally other types of music, but I think that they are just especially dominant in the DOOM soundtrack and not found as much in other styles, or at least not executed in this manner. It's half past 5 am in my time, so I apologize if what I wrote isn't very well understandable or if I come off as pretentious or a know-it-all, that's not my intention and I would love to hear other opinions on this. Thanks for your video, I'm looking forward to seeing more awesome reactions. :) Oh, and once again, congratulations on going full-time with content creation Jesse! 🎉
The thing about the Doom OST is that it fits the game SO perfectly. It's music designed to make you want to fight. To rip and tear until it is done. It never so much as acknowledges that the flee response is even an option. It is music to kill demons too. Cannot recommend driving to it unless you're in a destruction derby.
This song is pretty good by itself, but in the context of the game it's truly sublime. This music plays while you're blasting, punching, ripping and tearing your way through endless hordes of demons and other hellspawn. It's like a shot of adrenaline directly into your brain, and just gets you in the perfect headspace for the action.
Late bringing this up, but the soundtrack is dynamic. The songs pick up in intensity based on button inputs, it's really cool to see. Devil May Cry implemented this as well.
I believe he was asked to not use guitars at all, which was silly and ultimately not something that would have worked. But he certainly took the OST places we'd not visited before with things like that chainsaw being used as an actual instrument.
Mick Gordon really does perfectly encapsulate the mood of Doom and Doom Eternal that they're going for. Like, the title of this sums it up perfectly. The hordes of hell are ravenous, cruel, and fearless... except for you, you are the thing that goes bump in the night and causes the hosts of Hell to quiver in fear.
What a good song to kickstart your full time youtube career. Nothing to share about the music, the song said it all by itself. Just want to congrats and wish you good luck on your journey
RIP and TEAR. Like BFG division, this music plays during fights. Those build ups are intense and just builds so much tension that when you are unleashed, you are hyped as hell to do so. You said "I feel like I'm gonna get punched in the face". This music makes me wanna punch evil everytime.
Take note that Mick Gordon uses an original Russian Polivoks synthesizer when making the synthesized bits. All the sounds were apparently accidental due to Russian labeling but worked out in the end when he first began.
I don't know why it's so hidden, it's my favourite out of all of them, the way that song just punches you in the face is incredible, also the lawnmower is very apparent in that song
Man, Mick Gordon is such an incredible artist. Just beyond just the DOOM Soundtrack. Though he actually gave a talk at GDC back in 2016 where he detailed how he created the sound for DOOM which was absolutely incredible, especially as a music enthusiast. Dude crossed a chainsaw with his guitar in a morph plugin. It's absolutely insane. I think he used a Lawnmower for DOOM: Eternal
Lets not forget the amazing easter eggs he inserted. In the 80's hes have been arrested for spreading Satanic Panic with the images he was able to insert, visible via spectrum analyzer.
8:20 It's a reference to a scene in the game where Doomguy is accepted into a group and they are chanting his war cry, "RIP AND TEAR!" as he walks down an aisle...
The tunes in Doom are very intelligently made so the game can adjust what part of the tune is playing depending on how much destructing you're bringing to the level. great vid brother good luck with your new career choice
As many have mentioned look up his talk at gdc to understand the rig he uses, the old soviet synth, and the 9string. but Liam Triforce did a great breakdown on how the music is composed and utilized in game from the first through eternal. The fact that its composed in segments which are arranged during gameplay to reflect the current chaos on screen which also makes arrangement for a sountrack difficult because they're just collections of indiviual "words" composing a virtual "musical" sentence thats never exactly the same each time you play that level or section. the drum march section is definite lead in and anyone who say otherwise is a liar. Its a lead in to listening to more music by Mick Gordon.
Basically, Mick Gordon runs sounds through a massive array of synthesizers and other audio devices to distort the sound and create randomly distorting feedback loops and. His guitar is also connected to a program that mixes the riffs with the sound of the chainsaw from the original Doom, morphing them into the unique style that makes Doom so amazing!
The way the soundtracks works in the game, is that every "track" is divided in segments, and according to the player's actions, the environement and the situation, the game reassemble the segments in different ways, so that the music is Always going according to the players actions If ther's only a few Demons in a small room, the music will be "mellow" (has it can be with these), while if you are in a huge arena with a shitload of Demons, the music will be Hectic and Brutal, and the way the players play also affects it, if you're mobile, and use divers weapons and score headshots or Glorykills. Thsi procedurial approach to the soundtrack is really well interwoven into the gameplay, and it just makes it so much better.
Been going through your channel, didn't realise you were doing this full time! As others have said, this being the song to kick it off is just golden. Going solo to the beats of demon slaying couldn't be more fitting.
My friend, the fact that Mick Gordon can use household items to make such BRILLIANT music, to the point where I now say, "Heavy Metal goes to Mick Gordon school to learn Mick Gordon" is a testoment to his composing abilities.
The "space invaders" version of "the only thing they fear is you" is by far my favorite mix of this song. Super Gore Nest (if you find the right mix) is one of my favorite tracks by Mick
The genre coined by lovers of DOOM's music style, Argent Metal, cause when Djent isn't heavy enough, you go lower, to an absurd degree, blowing out the bass, snapping the snare, hitting the guitar strings with pure violence. Argent metal is describable with only a few words, "Pure Violence and Aggression as Music"
I've been gushing on a few of your vids, and I love this as well of course... but I just wanna say I love that you have Fighting Game music in your intros/breakdowns. Congrats on leaving your old job - I hope it has gone well for you!
the ending chant is "rip and tear" its the gladiator chant for the doomslayer since thats where he rose to power and it just so happens that theres a theme called "gladiator"
When that drop happens it's like a mosh pit just teleported into whatever space you are listening to and you wanna just wreck everything like you are the last man standing against a hoard of demons knowing you are going to win.
It's not that the ending leads into something else, but rather that the DOOM Eternal song Kar En Tuk leads into this song so perfectly. Although the same argument could be made for BFG Division or Rip & Tear to precede The Only Thing They Fear Is You.
It's not a song, but I highly recommend checking out Mick's 2017 GDC talk he gave on his process of creating this soundtrack. It's both entertaining and really gets into the more technical aspects that a lot of "behind the scenes" don't touch.
The DOOM Array/Instrument is freaking genius. And it proves his point: to get different outcomes you gotta sometimes change the parameters and methods, sometimes radically.
2:30 is a lawnmower used as a high synth (as well as the high synth whine throughout the first "verses") and the guitar riff from the start and throughout is guitar over chainsaws, chainsaws being the low synths.
Obviously the synths? They're put through filters and chopped up a bit but yeah, lawnmowers and chainsaws. If people don't wanna go with "Argent Metal" I think it'd be funny to call it "Garden Metal" or "Yard Metal" because of the mower and chainsaws. That'd make me chuckle.
RIP AND TEAR! UNTIL IT IS DONE! also man... you're in for a treat if you liked this one THE WHOLE ost is a banger try meathook, super gore nest or cultist base i assure you're going to ENJOY them
The music is one of the main reasons doom eternal is my favorite games, if I feel epic doing homework with this song imagine what it feels like ripping demons in half
Look up Geoff plays guitar. He turns all kinds of stuff into what has been dubbed Argent metal. Mick Gordon even called him out to convert a song. His Ludwig the holy blade from bloodborne goes hard as fuck.
You should absolutely give The Partisan a try from the Wolfenstein The Old Blood soundtrack. It's an old rebel anthem song during WW2, and Mick did an amazing job on it.
Great reaction. Very insightful and very enjoyable. I was into DOOM awhile ago, but left -- until now. Like you I need more. So please do more. Congrats on your decision and much luck. Cheers!
Great track! Been awhile since I've heard this particular one. It's def up there on my top list, but current top fav is still gotta "Immora" (koma remix). That track is PURE raw power, its insaaane.
I really gotta say. Doom music is really intense and you did nail it, it's designed to really feel the music. And by "feel the music" I mean when you get into one of these fighting arenas. Where the doors lock, the demons spawn in to surround you, and the music kicks on. You start to really feel the music. You are reminded YOU are the doom slayer. After you really get used to the game, and get all your abilities in Eternal, when you end up in these fights it's like... Your brain turns off. The music just fills your head with the sound of your guns firing. It's like you're on autopilot and it just becomes 'rip and tear.' It felt that way at least to me and a few other people I talked to. Doom Eternal really gets you into that zone.
So far in my 31 years of life there are two sections in songs that make me bang my head harder than anything else, one is 4:59 in this song and the other is the section at 1:31 in Jerry was a Race Car Driver by Primus
Congrats going full time into UA-cam, I hope it works out well! Also good choice on music to react to, personally I'd go with BFG Division, Demonic Corruption, or Rip and Tear.
Early bird comment! I found you recently and loved your take on music that I love. Keep up the good work man, Congrats on escaping the grind and making the move!
"I feel like my face is gonna get punched" yes... But you make sure you punch them 10x harder when the drop hits and remind them why you are the only thing they fear
This is not the track to get your face punched to.. this is what plays when you're going to punch every face in a thirty-mile radius. And as Ryan Hampson mentioned on another comment, there are chainsaws and lawnmowers that were used before Bethesda said he was clear to use actual guitars, but he kept some of those sounds he'd created before then. As for the ending maybe leading into something, D4N5T3P was right, that part wasn't in the actual game's track, but the audio is a bit from 'Kar En Tuk', a very fantastic track. There's a behind-the-scenes for it somewhere.
Hoy dude, ty for the reaction, just wanted to recommend you checking the Doom Orchestral arrangement of Rush Garcia, it's still very heavy and gives a suite to the marching beat :P
Hopefully this doesn't get buried. Mick's work on the Doom OSTs is incredible, but Andrew Hulshult's work on the Ancient Gods deserves some recognition. The Heavy Fighting sections of the Blood Swamps is suuuuper heavy. I think you'd dig it.
That suspense you talk about? The track "Harbinger" from Doom 2016's soundtrack is literally 6 minutes of buildup with 1 minute of drop split between two different points. It's as ridiculous as it is amazing.
Just found your channel one your last doom video and I’m hoping you post more soon!! Also, when you are done reacting to doom(good luck lol), you’d love the games. The only thing is, the games play the music so it’d be a spoiler
Sorry for being late to the party. Congratulations for taking this big step and all the best for your future! Yes, this is not on Patreon, but I still have a recommendation, that you probably find enjoyable: Someone named proteh used this track and certain voice overs from the game, edited around and created a music video called "The Only Thing They Fear... Is Him". It's 6:15 long and basically functions as a long trailer to show what Doom's about and to precisely convey the feeling of the game, both in the overall atmosphere and the actual gameplay action. Like, if you want to know what DOOM is and what it feels like, this is what I'd show someone. I leave the link here. Have a good one! ua-cam.com/video/-kWeB4IJ7sA/v-deo.html
the reason the face is blurred out is because the only thing they fear is YOU, yes you, the person reading this, just like how the doom music is the boss theme of the doom slayer it is also the boss theme for you, the slayer is the player, the slayer is unnamed, the slayer is you, the only thing they fear is you, rip and tear until it is done. with that said, stay sharp slayers, ciao.
Also if the cuts sound strange in the song its because in the game the music basically changes and evolves based on your playstyle and what is around you at the time

@Red of the Man I disagree. This song is the only one I think is better without the gameplay version and in game. Same goes for BFG Division.
If a band came out with this as an original song, it would be revolutionary for the metal scene. Mick Gordon is a fucking God.

About his crazy modulations. I believe he used an actual lawnmower instead of guitars in some parts of this song.

That ending is kinda a reference to the song Gladiator, which is an absolute head banger.
The end of this song feels like beating an angry god to death with your bare hands.
I read all comments :D Good to know!
@@JessesAuditorium awesome! Grats on making this work full time. I hope you continue to enjoy it!
The more you listen the more you get addicted, and the more you crave it.
When mick Gordon turned 18, his parents moved out.
@3:26 if every hair on your body is not standing up you are officially dead
mick making ost accidently makes new sub genre. Argent Metal.
They fear him so much that they had to blur his face
Man doom is epic, no matter which time, this game will be always one the bests!
DOOM: the $60 album that comes with a free game.
Is a chainsaw an instrument?
Yes....yes it is.
If it doesn't feel like you're about to be the next one to be torn in half, you are not listening to a DOOM soundtrack.
crazy thing is that its not even my fav song personally. they're all so damn good.
I am a man who is his own boss, so I salute you to starting your own path!
Highly recommend Cultist Base next!
the guitar in this song is a chaisaw and the synth is a lawnmower
That suspense you talk about?
The track "Harbinger" from Doom 2016's soundtrack is literally 6 minutes of buildup with 1 minute of drop split between two different points. It's as ridiculous as it is amazing.
its actually based on DOOM 3's title theme
BLOODSWAMPS from the doom eternal OST. Its not mick gordon but its just as dope.
The last 60 seconds is someone headbanging a brick wall for extra realism in the audio design.
Good for you mate... If enough people start doing their own thing, corporates will be forced to reveal their true self which is ultimate disgust...
This is exactly what I been waiting for 😎
Just found your channel one your last doom video and I’m hoping you post more soon!! Also, when you are done reacting to doom(good luck lol), you’d love the games. The only thing is, the games play the music so it’d be a spoiler
You are going to love Cultist Base and Meathook from Doom Eternal.

I personally would like to think that the ending is to portray the endless, eternal fight of Doom Slayer against the demons.
Props on quitting your job and chasing the dream.
He used a chainsaw as an instrument: You gotta admit, the guy is crazily insane. :D
the reason the face is blurred out is because the only thing they fear is YOU, yes you, the person reading this, just like how the doom music is the boss theme of the doom slayer it is also the boss theme for you, the slayer is the player, the slayer is unnamed, the slayer is you, the only thing they fear is you, rip and tear until it is done. with that said, stay sharp slayers, ciao.
Also if the cuts sound strange in the song its because in the game the music basically changes and evolves based on your playstyle and what is around you at the time
