- Sharing my first impressions of Derwent's new Chromaflow pencils. While they were off to a bumpy start, now we all know these are around as a "test" from Derwent to see if they can replace Prismacolor.
As a big Prismacolor fan, I just had to try these out and see for myself. This is not an official review, that comes later, but I do share my first impressions.

I bought mine today. They are great 😊
As a Colour pencil Artist I can tell you that when you combine the prismacolors and the derwent drawing pencils you get pure magic
Oooh how do you combine yours? I def plan to try it!
@@ColorfullyOptimistic i usually do it in layers one of each and use the prismacolour blender pencil to get that smooth butter look
What many people don't know about Prismacolours is that they are CRAYON colours.. almost..
They are wax crayons in pencil form.. they are wax-heavy coloured pencils, not exactly as waxy as typical childrens' wax crayons, but almost there..
Theat is why they:
1- crimble easily.
2- wither easily.
3- Very soft and creamy..
4- highly blendable..
5- Cover big areas fast.
6- and.. wax-blooooom..
However, Derwent original colour recipies for their coloured pencils, are based on typical, orthodox colour pencil recipies.. they were staying away from the "fragile" wax crayon recipies.. :^)
I think with Chromaflow they've gotten closer.:^)0-
Makes a lot of sense. I do like the chromaflow but also don't know if it will ever replace prismas for me. 🤣
AS AN ADULT ARTIST!! I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HONESTY OF "YOUR PERSONAL OPINION, SOLEY!"
TOO MANY PEOPLE DOING REVIEWS OF PRODUCTS ON UA-cam SAY A LOT OF SILLY & UNTRUE STATEMENTS ABOUT ART SUPPLIES THEY OBVIOUSLY DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO EVEN USE CORRECTLY- WHICH I BELIEVE MAKES THESE TYPES OF REVIEWS I AM REFERRING TOO- BASICALLY, IGNORANT ILLEGITIMATE & EVEN HARMFUL PRODUCT REVIEWS, PERIOD! IMHO, AS AN ARTIST!
YOU HOWEVER, MADE IT VERY, VERY CLEAR REPEATEDLY, EXACTLY WHO YOUR CHANNEL CONTENT AUDIENCE IS ADDRESING!! WELL DONE & THANK YOU.
Or people who compare a wax-based with an oil-based pencil; or use a wax-based as an oil-based pencil 🤦♀️
@@Art_by_NicoleI think comparing a wax with an oil is fine as well as using one the same as the other as there isn't a "one size fits all" technique for pencils regardless of whether they have a higher oil or wax content. Also, all pencils are oil and wax based, just depends on what is a higher content. Oil doesn't equal hard pencil and wax doesn't equal soft. For example, the Derwent Artists are very hard pencils and those are "wax based" so you'd use techniques you'd normally use with the harder pencils like what you're referring to as "oil based" ones. Caran D'ache Pablos are also (I believe) "wax based" and those are (imo) harder than a Polychromos which is "oil based".
Like I'm saying, it doesn't really matter. Using the lighter layering techniques people use for oily-er pencils also works just fine for waxy-er ones. Prismas remind me more of high quality crayons in pencil form than a traditional pencil which is why you'd be able to use it differently than most other pencils.
Comparing them is fine too, depends on what we are comparing. Opacity, hardness, texture, color selection, overall performance, build quality, etc are all just fine to compare between brands, it really doesn't matter because the function is still the same, and sometimes people like to compare to something so that others might understand what the product they're reviewing might be similar to. If I was talking about the Derwent Artisr pencils I'd compare them to a Polychromos before I would a Prismacolor because of their hardness, even though one is "wax based" and then other is "oil based"
Anyways, that's just my two cents based on 15 years experience with many pencils as both an artist and a colorist.
Thanks for this review. I literally just open the new pack of 24 & swatched them out.
So far I like them a lot...we will see how I feel after a few other tests & a few Colored pics
Will look forward to your experience with these very much,
Love your channel...!
Awe thank you. I hope you enjoy them. I honestly have only started a page with them and really need to get moving on it. They are not too shabby though.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic These babies hold a point nicely. Going to see how they hold up on one of Mariola's hair sketches.
Like everyone...wish there were MORE colors...!
just purchased them , they look wonderfull!!
Glad you like them! They really aren't for me, but all personal preference.
I picked these up just to use something different. Prismacolors are my favorite pencils. I used these in Worlds of Wonder. First on the castle/cave page because there are so many different elements, over 15 flowers and more leaves. I really got a large range of color with these pencils, enjoyed the pencils and the results. Then I did the strawberry mandala. Half was done in Chromaflow the other Prismas. I found a color equivalent on another channel. I thought the Prismas were slightly brighter but this could just be a color difference not quality. I felt the Chromaflow were softer. When I wanted to retain some definition, the Chromaflow tended to blend it out. Bottom line is that I prefer my Prismas. I did enjoyed using 24 pencils and have been seeing what I can do with 36 Prismas. Fun and interesting experiment.
Yeah, I have been using them here and there. They definitely are not bad, but when I go back to Prisma, I notice those subtle differences that really make Prismas my go-to.
Thank you for your initial review and I look forward to hear more when you have used them for a little while 👋🏻🤗👋🏻
You're welcome! I definitely will do a review after I have had some time to play around with them.
they look as pigmented as the lightfast!!!! cant wait to try them!
They are! However, they won't have the same lightfast rating and the Lightfast pencils are more oil-based while these are wax-based. I do hope they release more soon just so we can play around with more colors.
Where I live it isn't possible to get Amazon deliveries. I really enjoy prismacolors but I run thru them rapidly. I'm looking for a good pencil set that I can get some mileage out of.
Do you want Artist Grade? Blick Arts and Cult Pens have great options
@ColorfullyOptimistic yes. After alot of research I think Polychromos is what I need. I live far away from any city with an art shop. I get to order from Amazon like once twice per year. What would be another pencil in the oil based genre to compliment polychromos? I have all the prismacolors.
I just recently purchased these on prime days sale. This is now years later, did you get the 72 set?
Yes, I do have the 72 count set :). Not the biggest fan of these I won't lie
It’s interesting that Derwent lists the Coloursoft core size at 4, but nowhere lists the core size for the Chromaflow. Either they considered it inconsequential, or they don’t think we need to know. Not sure how I feel about that.
I would say the lead is def smaller than a 4 on Chromaflow. But I agree they're is not a lot of info on them. I mean they just threw them on the market 😆
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Lol Kind of like throwing a piece of spaghetti on the wall to see if it sticks. Maybe they hired a new marketing department a little wet behind the ears. Who knows? I think colorists sort of expect a bit more forthcoming info from companies like Derwent, Faber Castell and Caran d’Dache. It would not be surprising from white label outfits.
I bought a 24 pack of the Derwent academy colored pencils. Their leads are so fragile and break easily. Done with them. I'm aware they are student grade but they're bad.
I haven't tried those ones yet
@@ColorfullyOptimistic DO NOT TRY. BROKEN LEADS ALL OVER. Don't waste your money.
I like the colours,I hope these will be easy to get hold of in the U.K soon x
Me too! Especially since, ya know, they're made there lol. Their entire release was just wonky, but hey, I still bought them and so did a bunch of people. So, that's Derwent for ya :)
Ma'am how much it cost in Indian Rupees??🤔🤔😶😶
Honestly, I'm not sure. You would need to check what that would be on your side.
Do use them in a coloring books different papers ty
Yes, I definitely plan to do that :)
If you blend them you get more than 24 no?
Yes of course!
Thanks for your honest review 😁 which paper do you use for wax-based pencils like Prisma or Chromaflow?
And the scratchy one from Luminance? Number 588 or 589. It’s a dark-red colour. Gosh, so annoying 😣
I really enjoy the Neenah amzn.to/44Otl50
AS AN ARTIST, I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT YOU CLEARLY STATE IN YOUR COVER PAGE, THAT YOUR CHANNEL IS FOR ADULT COLOR BOOK HOBBIESTS!!
EXCELLENT DISCLAIMER REGUARDINGBYOUR CHANNELS CONTENT!! WELL DONE, DEAR!! YOU ALSO DID AN EXCELLENT INTRO TO THIS VIDEO EXPLAINING THAT THIS VIDEO IS JUST YOUR PERSONAL OPINION OF THIS PRODUCT! AGAIN, WELL DONE & A HONEST REVIEW OF "YOUR OWN PERSONAL OPINIONS!"
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR HONEST CHANNEL!!
THANK YOU!
BTW A SWATCH DOESN'T GIVE ANYONE A VERY GOOD IDEA OF HOW ANY PENCIL ACTUALLY PREFORMS, YOU HAVE TO USE THE PENCILS AND ON MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PSPER TO TRULY UNDERSTAND HOW ANY BRAND TRUELY PREFORMS!
IN MY HUMBLE OPINION AS AN ADULT ARTIST!
I LOVE THE PROPERTIES OF A 120 SET OF CRAYOLA COLORED PENCILS, FOR LAYERING, BLEND ABILITY & LIFTING WITH A KNEADED ERASER!!! HOWEVER, I CAN'T USE THEM FOR SELLABLE ART PIECES, OBVIOUSLY! BUT, I CAN ASSURE YOU YOU CAN LEARN A LOT ABOUT COLOR IN GENERAL BY USING THEM AS A LEARNING TOOL!
Hi there! So this isn't a review. I state that in the video and description that this is my first impressions only :). If you watch my channel a bit, you'll see I do first impressions and then reviews later, and reviews are only after the pencils have been used thoroughly. Just want to make sure that's understood, since it is really important.
I personally enjoyed coloring with them. I agree they are not prismas but nice none the less. My only gripe is that they only have a 24 set
Yeah, I feel if they wanted to be a replacement, they really need more colors and the 24 colors they choose were not the greatest. Guess we will see if they continue making them or not.
please do make a comparison video of : prismacolors vs. chromaflow vs. coloursoft for ur next video coz im damn confused of what to purchase... please!
Haha no problem at all. I can definitely do that for you!
@@ColorfullyOptimistic thanks a lot!!❤️
Thank you for the video. It was interesting. I definitely prefer a softer pencil. So yes Prismacolors are my favorite, and I do have to purchase a good handful of individual pencils from time to time. I'm glad I didn't purchase the Derwent colorsoft, as I really am more of a blender kind of colorist. I know what you're saying thou. Not everything has to be as soft as a Prismacolor, in order for me to use it. 😁
I totally agree! Although, I really really love Prismas lol. These, to me, are not a Prisma replacement 100% but they have potential.
Excellent review! I live in The Netherlands and these pencils are also not available here. I also checked Amazon Netherlands and Germany and they are not sold there either. So it seems they skipped the whole European market and not only the UK. Really strange, because Prismacolor pencils are very expensive here. So I really don’t understand why Derwent is selling these in the US, while Prismacolor is the best selling brand in the US! Why should you buy Derwent when you can buy Prismacolor 🤔
Oh wow! That is crazy. I don't know why they released them the way they did period. I just hope they make more so I can figure out if they are worth it. Hopefully they release in UK markets, but it seems there are no plans just yet to do so.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic The test release has only been into USA and India. Nowhere else. They are obviously testing the waters. Interestingly though, Derwent have new management. We will see where that takes them. This attempt and the botch of launch with no information, is not what we expect from a prestigious UK company.
@@suewilkinson910 Yes, I was really disappointed in how they released these. I don't understand why they didn't launch in the UK as well, since they manufacture them there. The limited information about the pencil was really poorly handled as well, unfortunately.
Apparently they are trying to target the US and India with these products first as they feel they need to promote their products more over there, these pencils are pretty much a trial, they’re gonna get feedback from everyone they’ve sent them to and buying customers and if their not well received you may never see them again
@@Kirstycolourandsketch will be interesting to see the feedback. I personally would like to see more colors. They're not bad at all but hard to really compare when I have to mix to make my colors lol. Plus, I'd be interested in seeing the variety they come up with to compete against Prismacolor
❤️
IMO these are way too expensive for what they are.
I didn't try those Derwent but in my opinion Prismacolors are way too expensive for the quality we get...
They are definitely pricey, but it is shiny and new and with any new product, the price is always higher. I'd like to see what the prices finishes at once they've been out a bit and if they release more.
I have had issues with Prismas, but I really don't find them to be too expensive for what we get. However, that's just me, and I just so happen to really really love Prismas lol :)
As far as I'm aware they are still manufactured in England by Derwent, so they will never be able to compete with the prices of pencils that are manufactured in China, Mexico, etc. We'll have to wait and see if the quality matches the price point.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic I paid more for my collection of Black Widows than for my PRISMAS.😞
💛💛💛
Thank you!
