In 1979 I was a college student and freelance photographer. I got a call one afternoon to get over to a local high school in St. Louis. The Knack was on their first tour and Sharona was the number one song. They were passing through StL and didn't have date scheduled, but on a whim they decided to play an impromptu show at Kirkwood high school. From the opening notes of Your Number Or Your Name, they electrified the packed auditorium. I already had the debut album and loved this band. I knew every note of every song and they played each tune perfectly, to screaming applause. They were one of the tightest, most electric bands I've ever seen. I got some great shots that I cherish to this day and I'll never forget the day the number one band in the country popped in to play our high school. Years later they played another concert here, which I also attended, and, again, marveled at the absolute precision of their performance. Such a tragedy to lose Doug and Bruce so soon. Amazing musicians and my all time favorite band.

I love reading comments like this, the summer of 1979 was my high school senior year summer, graduating in 1980, in June of ‘79 we had around 25 classmates taking part in a Senior Car Wash fund raiser, my best friend had the trunk of his ‘75 Charger opened up with the stereo cranking, I must have heard My Sharona around three or four times that afternoon when I finally asked who is this?? One of the girls in my class mentioned it’s a new band called The Knack and she and some of the girls heard it several times at the beach the day before…Well that moment began such a love and connection to The Knack that still goes on for me today… they became a school favorite (St Ladislaus HS in Hamtramck, a small city inside the Detroit city limits)…As they took off that summer their popularity in our class was massive, so much so that around 25 of us headed to Masonic Temple downtown to see them on their first tour in October 1979…One of my favorite concerts to this day!! They are such a tight, strong power pop rock n roll band that never ever got the accolades they deserved! Of course horrendous management decisions and a seemed hatred from the press doomed this amazing band… I could go on and on, seen and met the band several times, and Doug’s connection to us and Detroit was made all the more sweeter as he is from Oak Park, Michigan, a Detroit suburb just on the other side of the famed 8 Mile. RIP Doug and Bruce, gone much much too soon.

In 1979, I was in my third year at the University of Southern California. One early afternoon in November, in front of our then student union, the Knack was there to perform their entire album featuring My Sharona. The grounds were full of
college students, we all had a great time listening and when My Sharona was performed it was loud and magical.
Years later, in 1988, a friend envited me to Bogarts Music Bar in Long Beach, Ca. {no longer an establishment}, to see the Knack. Again the same magic I felt in their tunes as I felt back at USC. After the show, on our way out the band was cool to greet and small talk anyone who desired to meet them. I spoke with Doug and asked him if he remembered his concert at USC, one cool November afternoon. He said that he did and thanked me for coming by to listen to the band again.
We shook hands and parted. All four members of that band were down to earth and just loved performing. Now when I see You Tube excerpts of their performances, it really takes me back to college days and wonderful rock n roll.

Anyone who thinks The Knack is "my sharona" needs to watch this.
R&R Funhouse it a perfect example of what The Knack is and was! The simplicity of the production and live performance really highlights the great music and great band The Knack is. From 1979 to 2001 everything is diverse, creative and infectious. So happy they made RRFH so The Knack can live on forever!!!
Fan since 1979... RIP Doug, you are missed.

I can’t believe there’s so few comments about this incendiary performance. I got Get the Knack when I was 11 and still get chills listening to one of the best albums ever.

This is epic, the fact that you transferred it from VHS gives it that look that fits with the old rock’n roll performance shows Doug Fieger was referring to. Definitely thanks for uploading!

Bruce Gary's performance on this is only one example of why he was such a terribly underrated drummer. The guy was incredibly talented. Truly a monster player with an amazing resume that many, many others would be envious of.

Dr Lazarus, thanks for uploading this! I had no idea this footage even existed. I've been a big fan of The Knack for almost 8 years and I'd love for you to post more footage of these guys! I had no idea that Freeview from DirecTV even existed back in 2001/2002. Was this recorded thru DVR or VHS?

@@DrLazurus sorry to hear about your vcr. It's so hard to believe Doug Fieger (lead vocals, rhythym guitar) and Bruce Gary (drums) are no longer with us. Doug has been gone almost 13 years this coming Valentine's Day. Bruce has been gone almost 17 years this coming August.
