I am so mind blown right now as a Zambian I never thought our music would get any recognition outside our country. Thank you so much Professor Skye for the work that you’re doing and always giving us different perspectives love all the way from Zambia ❤🇿🇲

Zambia kuchalo...
100% hear you, but as the saying goes "no one is a prophet in one's own country". We need to unapologetically own our creations and creatives to the max. 🇿🇲🤝🏿
Zamrock is huge in the alternative music scene in New York!
@@levicohen7333definitely big on west coast too
Professor Skye, thank you for acknowledging the importance of international hip-hop and sharing the amazing insights about French culture and hip-hop. I appreciate it. I love learning new things like that
AVAA, i'm rlly glad that tyler is bringing light to music from countries such as zambia. Ever since the estate sale, i feel like he has been mentioning more and more his nigerian roots, i predict that the whole album will be very tied to africa
YOU GOT ME SO BAD WITH THE BLACK SABBATH SAMPLE AHAHAHHA NOOOOO MDJDJFNDMDKFJJC
AVAA
Stray thoughts on what Tyler has presented so far: I've seen several comment, and thought myself, "Lynchian," specifically "Eraserhead."
There was a sketch on something like Living Color (...maybe Once Bitten? Idr...) with a Farrakhan spoof "...the hwyte man, lacking the ability to reflect, is like a vampire!"
A reflection can be considered the complement of a shadow.
Reflections occur on chromatic surfaces.
Black and white (gray scale) is also considered "chromatic."
There seems to be a developing theme, potentially manichean, of B/W vs color, as there seems to be incongruity constantly between the two in some respect. Like the two sides are struggling for directional control over prisms.
AVAA I was so excited when I thought Tyler sampled War Pigs on first listen but hearing the real sample made me appreciate the song even more! Can't wait to see where he goes with these ideas in the rest of the album!
AVAA. Some thoughts on the African angle;
1) I've seen people compare the hairstyle Tyler wears to the Amasunzu hairstyle seen in Rwanda
2) The militaristic outfit reminds me of Fela Kuti's Zombie a little.
3) The mask also reminds me of Frantz Fanon's "Black Skin, White Masks". The themes of the book correspond with the images/themes you discussed wrt the NOID music video.
Your 2nd take - my mind just went BOOM. I do have Zombie LP. Great take 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
18:55 there's a longer version of the song on streaming
Professor! Thank you so much for creating such enriching, exciting and nourishing content! Your way of talking about hip hop is full of love and respect. I was wondering if you noticed, that 'Chromakopia' album cover art is very similar to David Bowie's 'Heroes' - if you'd place them together they're creating a very interesting image, but they also mirror each other in pose and image. I found it quite interesting considering how politically charged 'Heroes' were in Berlin War division and post-war life context. which can be linked to german expressionism too. Have a lovely day, greetings from the UK!

I think you are right on the money with the Thundercat shout, there was a picture of tyler and him in the studio from I believe last year
AVAA love the analysis as always ! dont have much to say but clearly u do !
Le plus drôle dans tout ça c'est que moi en tant qu'africain togolais je n'ai jamais entendu parlé du rock zambien, c'est Tyler qui vient de me les faire découvrir et je n'ai qu'une chose à dire ils sont incroyables. 😂
Nice sweater
african artists deserve big credits. and cash for sampling their orginal music.
or in general nishe artists.. top players always take from them

The scariest album cover for me is Hot Rats by Frank Zappa, but only because it creeped the hell out of me when I, at 4 years old, pulled it out of my dad's record collection. Now it's been one of my favourite albums, if not my all-time favourite, for over 20 years (but the cover still awakens feelings of that little scared 4 year old)
I know this guy pops and edi before these videos definitely smacking the pen
AVAA, you should really delve into Cheb Khaled that was featured on the first slide you showed, truly a phenomenal artist by all means
"someone's keeping watch, i can feel them in my shadow" is a great line. That sort of paranoia reminds me of the short film "Film" by Samuel Beckett where Buster Keaton attempts to lock himself in his room and avoid being perceived by even himself. It delves into the concept of the camera as an intrusive voyeur, which I think is an element of why it's the video to this song is an essential part of the experience: even as he's running and attempting to escape the gaze of people, he's creating art that invites the gaze of millions (almost 5 million views on the video as I'm writing this). The contradictions of an artist's relationship with their audience.
edit: potentially why the mask that looks eerily like him is so important. He's creating a public-facing persona to protect himself
AVAA! Gotta join another commenter in recommending Varnish La Piscine, a French-speaking producer/artist with a lot of similar influences to Tyler. I wouldn’t be surprised if he inspired Tyler’s new era, they post each other’s music
Tyler's "Chromakopia" mask reminds me of a 'black' (and removable) version of the (stitched on) "whiteface" from 'Who Dat Boy'. AVAA
You forget so much of mainstream hip-hop's debt to Fela Kuti. Plenty of US Artists have either sampled or interpolated the Nigerian Afrobeat Legend.
Thundercat doesn’t play on your record. He creates a Thundercat situation. He should add that to his bio now. 😂 AVAA
2:48 it would be great if you could make video analysis about french-speaking hip-hop artists
I was just thinking of his use of Nigerian Flag color and aesthetics from the 60s and 70s
Hey actually it's not a black Sabbath sample it's
You listened!
I'm glad that he introduced Zambian music to a bigger audience. I hope someone thanks him personally. Still surreal to listen to a Paul Ngozi sample. At this rate I can picture Witch's Home Town fitting perfectly on the album
This is gonna be album of the year FREE
Possibly album of the half decade
Hi Skye, I love the content keep going strong. I just wanted to point out that calling it immigrant rap really struck a nerve. A lot of these guys are 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation French. Still living in the banlieue. You mentioned your generation of American, at which point will they finally be accepted in French society? As the saying Liberté, Égalité et fraternité goes, it leaves much to be desired. Calling it immigrant rap felt really insensitive, especially considering the current political shift in Europe. Anyway, I enjoyed the video. Cheers from the Netherlands !
AVAA Talking about French rap, I recommend you the new Album Blackbird by BB Jacques, especially the last 3 songs that are the best songs in French rap for a while in my opinion.
Wow he called it. It is indeed Thundercat
As a Nigerian, we unfortunately can't avoid the noid either😭
Noir Désir is my favorite album by Youssoupha, he also has amazing samples on the mixtape he release before that album.
Zambia to the world 🌍
I was just reading a book about the relation between shoes and black history.
Back in the days of slavery, wearing shoes was a sign of being civilized, but more than that it was a sign of not being a slave. In many parts of the world, so long as you were a slave, you didn't get to wear shoes (barring regions where not doing so was extremely detrimental). Living barefoot was equal to the status of being enslaved.
When a person bought their freedom, one of the first thing they got were shoes, many times even showing off how they got a pair at the front of their house. Still, due to their years of living barefoot they couldn't find comfort in using them for long periods of time, so they had to take them off sometimes to go from place to place.
Running barefoot could - besides the runaway theme and the unpreparedness of it - signify a loss of freedom.
A lot of the shots in the video (and the theme of it too) seem to be inspired from Kanye's Runaway short film, recomend you watch it if you haven't. AVAA
I like the sweater Professor Skye!
AVAA Speaking about French Rap, if you're not aware, you should check out a Swiss-French rapper/producer Varnish La Piscine. He's style of music is actually quite Tyler adjacent. Would be cool if you coud review his EP 'CE LAC DU SUCCES' on the channel. It's great
Love to see a fellow Varnish supporter 🔥 the man is a wizard
extended version of the song on spotify btw
And Apple Music
AVAA - the full song is also released and it’s over 4 minutes with a second verse
love the video, AVAA :)
AVAA unrelated but I like your sweater
It is Thundercat on bass
I saw an interview with the Mobb Deep affiliate Big Noyd where he said he got his name from that Domino's mascot. Apparently he'd get teased for his resemblance to the character.
Skye this is not a black sabbat
I think it’s a synthesised bass probably played on a keyboard by Tyler as opposed to someone playing bass
13:26 yeah
