Took my brothers skateboard, he does not uses it, and after some of the learn to skateboard videos I tried to ollie and after 7 days i'm riding good and already can do a solid pop shuvit, the progress is stagering, I'm so addicted now! When the boards were like that the skateboarding itself was pretty much just substitute for surfing. People would come up with different stuff while there weren't waves.
When people started to build up their identity as skaters and not surfers killing time, it allowed evolving of the culture. More time people invested to skateboarding, even if there were good waves, they came up with new tricks and new solutions for skateboards.
I think it's pretty cool to see history of the sports. If you'd break down those early skates more than often you'd find yourself with some pretty common items most of people might have in hand: broken roller skates, 2x4 plank and screws.
I assume back then it didn't matter what you rode, because no other rider would really had anything "officially" right skateboard either. I think it's healthy way of thinking, because skateboards will evolve only when someone tries something new. That's one reason I love stupid skates too =D

When I was 12 (Around 1985) my family was pretty tight for money, I wanted a skateboard in the worst way.
So I built my first deck out of 3/4 Plywood, Rodney Mullen style, and an old roller skate. Thanks for the nostalgia guys!
I really like how you let the kids try it out, they may or may not take anything away from the experience but it's the history of the activity they are doing and its nice to see them giving it a try on one of the earliest styles of skateboards!

The biggest difference between the 60's skateboards and modern boards is the ones from back then were just made for getting around on, while the modern ones are made for doing stunts on.

I never noticed until I read your comment, but stunt is actually a better word for it than trick. Ive been skating since I was a kid and always said trick, but "trick" kinda does make it sound like magic or something meant to fool people like an illusion. And theyre not. It really is more of a stunt.
Ha ha, I made a skateboard from an old roller skate back in the late 70s when I was a kid. It was held together with oval nails and only went in a straight line. I'd totally forgotten about that til I saw this vid.

What you do is you take a kick flip and you build up to a more complex trick and the first to reach the top of the hierarchies wins. if you fail, you have to redo it all in its pattern.
example()
start with 1 kick flip
(next hierarchy)
then do 2 sequential kick flips
then do one double kick flip
(next hierarchy)
do 3 sequential kick flips
then do 2 sequential double kick flips
then do 1 triple kick flip
(you win)
The pattern looks like this..
