I'm 51 yrs old and have lived in Irvine .it was a terrible decision knocking down the road bridge over the river.full of chain stores .the high stvwas killed by this .then the local council made the rates and rents so high smaller retailers couldn't survive .. as for the Jobs and industry .Thatcher the milk snatcher did her bit and made sure all our industry was closed down .
I'm originally from Kilwinning, I loved going to the magnum. Bloody shocking they binned it. Will forever remember the rivergate centre with the water wheels that rarely worked. They (Cunningham district council, latterly North Ayrshire council) have allowed architectural vandalism to take place etc. they've even destroyed Kilwinning too. Bloody disgrace.
Houses houses houses being built everywhere......its a shame for my children. Irvine had more going for it between 1950 and 1999 than it does now. Its a disgrace but unfortunately just like everywhere else in ayrshire. How can they build a facility like the magnum in the 1970s and screw up a facility like the portal nowadays 🤔
Congratulations Craig, an excellent piece of work. It was a lovely touch to get Paul Young to do the narration. As someone who was in my teens when the New Town Development Corporation began to transform the town, I agree wholeheartedly with the views presented in your video. The town lost much of its heritage unnecessarily (17th and 18th Century buildings in Parterre, the Water Bridge (its proper name), the northern and south-western parts of Bridgegate and all of the former centre of Fullarton (which was a separate community until 1881). All of this could have been avoided, if the original New Town Plan from 1967 had been implemented; whereby the shopping centre would have been built near Stanecastle: www.flickr.com/photos/crawfordfulton/7995046481/in/set-72157631555689181

This makes me a bit sad. They flattened the magnum 2 years later... Nice Documentary though! I l really enjoyed the storytelling.
