- If you’re a DJ who uses turntables, there are many good cartridge options out there for you to use when performing. But what happens when you take away all the technical and audio demands of DJing with a cartridge, and instead choose something aimed squarely at home listening? Could you potentially unlock more sound quality from your turntable, and vinyl collection? On the new episode of Beatsource Tech, Mojaxx takes a look at a couple of options from Ortofon’s 2M hifi range, and asks if it’s worth having one around in your home setup.

Yes still listen to Vinyl for pleasure
Yes, I do sit down and listen to vinyl. Thank you Mojaxx.
Hello! Thanks for the info- I’am definitely one of those djs that also enjoy the actual act of listening to album. It’s been at least 10 years since I’ve purchased any vinyl for edm performances, however I purchase albums all the time to enjoy and play on general listening/requests streams. I do enjoy when I get the opportunity to spin edm vinyl too! Cheers and thanks again!
I’m both a digital and vinyl DJ. Most recently I’ve been looking to upgrade my stylus as I’ve added some rare soul 45s that I don’t want to punish with a harsh needle so this review is very helpful. Keep ‘em coming!
I’m new to the SL-1200mk7, and I’m currently using the turntable to listen to vinyl albums. 🙏
My vinyl collection is growing weekly. Recently switched to Phase DVS, so my Ortofon carts will now last me forever since I won’t be back cuing with them.
I use a DJ style setup (a pair of 1200GR with 2m blues and Mastersounds V4) for listening to 45s. It’s handy to be able to set up the next 45 while the first one is playing. My “audiophile” turntable (Marantz TT15) is too finicky to mess with for anything other than full length LPs.
I used to have the 2M Blue and it was an amazing cartridge. Try playing the Doors on that thing and it’s magical…
I love sitting and pulling out vinyl from a huge collection which started in 1969. To sit and put on something that brings back memory’s from my past can make a shit day turn blue and sunny. I’m fortunate to have my own den just for music and often bring friends down to listen after a nice supper. Using Ortofon concords MkII AND DJ with a AT 140 but it’s just listening. I wish folks would get off just streaming coz to me they are missing out on so much detail and enjoyment from vinyl. I still create dig and buy new reissues but it’s expensive these days. 12” £1. Now £16. Albums at £2.99 and now I’ve paid over £40. Great video today and always look forwards to the next.
I bought the blue recently and it’s amazing… I’m not into scratching. Just beat matching and they work perfectly…. Plus the sound is on point
I've been follow your channel for a long , I'm not a DJ . Yes, I do listen to vinyl while sitting down. I've get a 5000 + collection with 4 turntables . A SL 1200 mk5 . 2 Stanton ST150 and a Rega RP6 . I love those Ortofon 2M Blue . I have 2 here. I do have the Concorde Club too , the new version. I did something special too. Ortofon have a 2M Gray. I put the Blue Stylus on the Gray Body. It makes it like a Bronze ( almost ) Look it up !!!!!
As a bedroom dj for over 30 years, a resounding yes to hifi carts. I play straight songs unmixed as much as I mix dance music. I keep two sets of carts and this hifi set recommendation is most welcome Mojaxx
Very thorough and accurate review!
I only DJ with vinyl using various DJ carts, but yes I swap the headshell and just sit and listen to records using the Ortofon red, which I find great. I will now upgrade to the blue for more listening pleasure and for ripping vinyl. Great post, thanks.
Yes my life is all around vinyls, my all around cart are shure m44g plus the jico nude stylus for mixing in my studio... more and more 45 but my sl-1200 in the living room where my jazz and ambiant records are have a Nagaoka mp-110 cart!
The vid I was waiting for , thanks 🎉
thanks for another great review.
I do both DVS and also listen and mix real vinyl. I have both the red and blue and use them mainly for listening and ripping. you can do gentle back-cueing and mixing with these carts but care is needed! If i have time i do like to sit down and listen to a LP and its nice to have a different cart to do this.
I was a DJ in the 1990s era. My collection comprises mostly hip-hop. I own a pair of Technics 1210s. I just recently purchased a Technics 1200GR. This turntable will be mainly used to listen to my LPs and record a few records digitally. So, to answer your question, Yes, I do put on a record just to listen to it. Ortofon 2M Blue will go nicely with my 1200GR.
I enjoy listening to Vinyl over my Spotify and DAC units any day. something about Vinyl that your ear doesnt feel fatigued after long hours of listening to music
Audio Technica AT-XP5 please
I have the blue. I dig it
Not a DJ
Enjoyed the review
Im Dj over 22 years still play with record and buy Dj records but im buying just retro records only for listening music and things personally is a amazing thing about Turntable you can mixing records, using on DVS system and just listening amazing best thing ever
I was literally just wondering when we were going to get another Mojaxx video... It's been 11 days... Then this happened
Yes do more hi fi videos!
FWIW I'm a fully digital DJ. Used to DJ with vinyl but stopped 15 years back or so. Since then I stopped buying 12's and 45s but in past 10 years I started buying a lot of LPs which I sit and listen to yeah. Like the vibe of doing it, won't pretend it's better quality than digital but it's nice all the same.
A head shell review would be great too especially considering ones by Nasotec
I'm a digital DJ but do buy all types of music on vinyl for listening to. Have a pair of 20yr old 1210s through a Xone:92 mixer (not put them through the DB4 yet Chris) and its mainly been Synthwave records & remastered on 180grm classics like Prodigy: Fat Of The Land or DJ Shadow Endtroducing
I still listen to vinyl, outside djing. I use the Grado Prestige gold for listening and just change stylus to the DJ 200i for djing. No good for heavy use though.
I buy vinyl albums specifically for listening at home (jazz, folk, electronica, reggae etc), as opposed to buying records for DJing (funk, hip hop, soul etc 45s). So this was a beneficial review as I'd been considering getting at 2M Red at some point for my lounge hifi turntable as currently I use a spare M44-G on there! 2M Blue it is then! cheers mate
Have read multiple reports of people using these for DJing. The cantilevers are a fair bit stronger than a lot of other hifi cartridges and can apparently handle some gentle back queuing
Great to see the audiophile world meshing with the dj world!
Personally, I think vinyl is rediculous, especially considering most people don't even listen to them on decent gear. I won't even bother going on about how silly stamping a digital master onto vinyl is, or the available frequency spectrum between digital and vinyl.
I'm all in on the digital audio side, with an assortment of quality dacs, but I put together a solid vinyl rig for digitizing vinyl when I have to. A Pro-Ject 2Xperience SB table with an Ortofon 2M Black, Mies P1000 phono preamp into an RME ADI-2 FS R BE.
The vinyl rips sound substantially better than a tech12 with an M44 playing the actual record.
It sort of reminds me of seeing someone with a $6000 synth running it through a $50 Behringer mixer.
I do listen regularly just to dancefloor music, part of knowing where the key parts are to make perfect blends, but also to listen how the overall energy level is and to put them the right place in my collection.
In regards to the 2M blue... Test out the Goldring E3, or E4... (Actual make is Audio Technica)
After the break in period, I am positive you will have a new benchmark cart for a very reasonable price, which many will like, especially in these wild and expensive times.
Also the GR E3 has a better tracking ability according to tests I've done with the Ortofon test record vs. the 2M blue. (The irony) :o)
Personally looking at the WHLB nudes from Jico at the moment, but prices are way too high, to breathe new life into the Whitelabels.
Retipping can be done, but I don't like the way the separation was with the older cantilever system, back when the factory was still operable in Mexico.
Any way, thank you for the review.
I started to DJ in the 90s, of course with vinyl records. Over the time I fell in love with the vinyl sound and bought an AT-95E, over the time the DJing part of vinyl playback fell into the background and I more and more became a vinyl listener and dug deeper into the hi-fi side of things and I really enjoy listening to albums and to digitize them.
Currently I‘m using an Ortofon Concorde R 20 (practically the Concorde variant of the 2M Blue) and I just ordered the OM 30 (which is equivalent to the 2M Bronze). I also ordered a Cambridge Audio Alva Duo phono preamp that will replace my ART Phono Plus preamp and that will probably where I will draw the line. That combo will set me back 600 Euros and any further upgrade will be just too expensive. But yeah, it’s a rabbit hole but it’s also very fun and definitely better sounding than any DJ setup.
I received the 30 stylus a week ago and it's the best sounding stylus I ever had. The 20 (similar to the 2M Blue) was my best sounding cartridge ever and and now it sounds dull compared to the 30 (similar to 2M Bronze).
Even if Ortofon says the 10/20/Red/Blue body is different to the 30/40/Bronze/Black body the difference is clearly there. I would recommend the 30/Bronze for every owner of the 10/Red or 20/Blue. The sound is noticeably wider, refined and more detailed. It also picks up more crackles and clicks though.
For reference: Until today I owned the following list of cartridges and none of them comes close to my new Concorde R 30.
AudioTechnica: AT-3600L, AT95E, AT95Ex, AT110E, AT120E, AT-VM95ML
Ortofon: Pro S, DJ S, Elektro S, Stylus 10, Stylus 20 (and now Stylus 30)
Shure: M97xE
I do listen to vinyl for please and always did.
I play alot of classic trance from vinyl using the mk2 club carts .But I buy most of my other genres albums on lp. Classic rock ect.
Bottom line you can't beat that warm chrisp sound you get from vinyl digital just doesn't cut it
Even though I use digital in the car ect.
I decided to upgrade from red to blue after this video, not a dj over here... just a sofa listener, greetings from argentina
I’m just a hobby DJ. Did it professionally years ago, but not for me anymore. I work from home now, and I sit and listen to vinyl all the time, several hours a day. Now I don’t buy 12”s or any singles, just albums to listen to and I love it. Have seriously looked at upgrading my cartridges, but I wonder if running them through a digital DJ mixer like my Rane 70 would add enough to notice. I assume something fully analog with great pre-amps I would notice, just not sure if all my pieces of gear align enough to be able to tell.
Mainly listen thru my old LP's at home when reading, otherwise its use the decks as intended but only at home, as i think it keeps me sharper on CDJ's when i play out and theres no way im humping crates of wax around these days
AT3600l carts n styli for DJing and listening
I love to Dj using turntables with vinyl or DVS. I also have a few other cartridges that I don’t Dj with at all. They are strictly for listening or recording them to a digital format. It also depends on the quality of the vinyl pressing. Your not going to get great sound out of a shitty piece of vinyl. It doesn’t really matter what cartridge your using in such a case.
Of course I buy and listen to non- electronic or dancefloor oriented records! I would say for every 5 DJing records, I get 1 for listening pleasure. Latest one is Welcome To The Pleasurdome by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Classic!
What about upgrading the phone stage for listening ? Giving the 2m red some extra capacitance as recommended would surely give better sound?
Hi, thanks for your nice video. My question is simple: given that Shure M44 is no longer available, what is the best cartridge for DJing (=beat matching, juggling, and scratching altogether) available for purchasing nowadays?
Not a DJ but yes listening records is a thing. That's what you did at 80's where most of my collection comes from and older. Had a long hiatus and recently bought a PLX-1000 and Ortofon 2M Blue for it. HD600 for listening. Ortofon Super OM 40 you should check out. In my opinion it has better sound color than for example Ortofon 2M Black. Happy with the 2M Blue now but when it comes to getting something new I think this is it. I listen to Metal and full orchestra and anything between from Herbie Hancock and ABBA to The Rolling Stones. I think this could handle it all.
I have a 2m red but i putted all my two tables in dj setup mainly for scratch. I’d like to find another table to connect directly to my denon amp. I think the sl 2000 is very underrated and good and quite cheap table, with the om red it should look and sound nice...
I've a red at home on the turntable in the living room. Avoided the blue as people said it was brighter/harher than the red? Did you get any sense of that? Personally I prefer subdued less harsh upper mids typically.
Any plans on reviewing the X1 MK3? Cheers
Next episode…
Can you try and get the black version please
Cantilever on that red looks a bit wonky!
What carts do you use for your 45 sets Mojaxx?
Owning the Concorde Elite (that sit soundwise between the 2m blue and bronze) comparing it also with the Audio Technica VM95SH who is super detailled and has a flat as f*CK sound still my favorite cart today. And yes I've compared both with the 2M black. The Audio Technica VM95SH is one of the best audiophile carts for the money sub 250€.
Where has mojaxx gone?
DO NOT USE HI-FI CARTRIDGES TO DJ.
