I was there. He rocked it. There were people (other contestants) complaining that it wasn't a vocal contest, it was a guitar contest. I asked one of them "Did you miss his guitar solo?" He just gave me a dirty look.
LOL wow! Myles would probably cringe at this, being such a young performer here and now being such a well-rounded musician and singer, but that was pretty awesome. Definitely had a stage presence even then. I would complain that he's so overlooked as a guitarist (he has such a great blues feel that you don't learn, you're born with it) but that's only because he's got golden pipes that captivates anyone who listens to him sing.
If the man could produce licks like that when he was in his early 20's imagine what he is capable of now. We sometimes see glimpses of his amazing guitar ability in Alter Bridge but I bet when he is playing on his own he absolutely tears it up. Myles is the man!!
Myles was a monster guitarist and vocalist even back then. He'd only been playing guitar 7 years at that point-those are some legit chops for playing that short of time. Is it just me or does he look like he's going go burn one after the gig out in Capitol Hill back then man lol
@somewayout Dude, his blackbird solo is already incredible! Just because it isn't fast or very technical doesn't mean it isn't as good as it could've been. He did exactly what he was trying to do with it. He put the emotion into the solo which is the goal of a guitarist.
This is amazing! Myles controls the stage. Looks like a baby. He shreds on guitar. Amazing! Not surprised. Myles is incredible on guitar. I listen to many songs Certain songs still make me cry. Not out of sadness. I am blown away by the lyrics. It truly is Myles passion that brings to songs to life. AB is ONE. With each other!!!
you were there? awesomeness! i met myles at the showbox when he was in the mayfield four back in the day. i've seen him and alter bridge countless times. good times, good times.
I love this video so much because he is amazing at both things, clearly, but I can't stop laughing at how he has this huge stage presence but the camera slowly pans back to there being about 10 people in the room.
That tapping bit gets me every time! So fucking awesome! He needs to bring those skills to his AB solos (which are already fucking amazing as is!). Would love to hear Myles drop a proper speed metal type solo on an AB song some day =D
Exactly, Myles holds back because he's not trying to upstage Mark. He's just trying to give the audience a show and have fun with his friend. Makes me laugh when I see people say Mark 'destroyed' Myles in battles when they're styles aren't even comparable. They are both excellent.
@@thyop89 what was that? a construction project? who destroys what? Funny audience, why is there a such thing as contest or destruction on a trade-off solo situation.
then you discovered AB, right? lol. I can't get over how friggin adorable Myles is in this video. :) his smile is so cute. :) and his guitar chops are AMAZING!
@MrsSlumdog no dobut. and he takes fantastic care of himself, too. when you see him on stage he's got bottles of water on the drum platform that he drinks. he's said he eats a lot of of veggies and mostly fish for protein. not a heavy drinker (he's said he'll have a few every now and then for an occasion, but doesn't go out regularly), doesn't smoke, no drugs, he exercises. he lives a very healthy lifestyle and it shows. good for him! he does look fantastic.
ya see, this is why i love alter bridge. you got the amazing genius that that is Mark Tremonti as lead guitarist, and you dont realize how awesome myles is on the guitar himself until you see stuff like this there arent many lead singers who can play guitar like this with a voice to match these days. he also writes the deepest most stunning lyrics.... ps. look how young he is :D
@wwedivaxx And that is true, later in the interview he also said they both bring something to the table as far as style goes. He based that off of vibrato, not technique. And it meets together perfectly. Its like Hendrix with Stevie Ray Vaughn. You can't distinguish who is better because of the different styles that they play.
OH MY GOODNESS....this is hilarious...I LOVE IT. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! Please don't ever take this video down. :D :D :D I bet Myles would croak if he watched this now, since he was less than thrilled when I hunted down his Citizen Swing stuff a few years ago. :D LOL...friggin' awesome. Gotta love the outfit! He's a beautiful man.
jarvis, what are you talking about an ego at larvae stage? Myles has no ego problem. he's incredibly down to Earth. ymhaguy96, look up some live Alter Bridge videos. I know I've seen videos of Find the Real live where Myles takes an solo that's not on the CD version. there's also one video of FTR where Mark's rig cuts out in the middle of his solo and Myles takes over. I believe it was in Barcelona this past summer. try searching for "Alter Bridge Find the Real Barcelona" and see what comes up
Myles Kennedy is the most underated musician in the history of the universe! He is a lot more talented than some people who are at the top of the music business. No offence meant to other artists that have songs in the top 10 of music charts today but I am sure Myles has more talent than some of these rap or rnb artists that are getting number 1 hits all the time. It's terrible how not that many people have heard of him or Alter Bridge!
francamente este tio es admirable... lo he escuchado en vivo con alter bridge y su voz es de la pm, y cuando tocaba la guitarra se notaba la calidad, ahora me doy cuenta q es realmente bravo!
It would have been nice if they told him of the prophecy that he would be one of the greatest singers in the world of one of the greatest bands in the world back in the day...
@somewayout I believe that Myles is right on the line with Mark on guitar playing. Both are truly amazing, it's just that they have different styles. Mark has that great Hard rock, fast guitar playing and Myles has that more mellow, slower kind of playing that fits in perfectly with their songs. Both of them fit perfectly with each other, missing piece to eacch others puzzle
you fail. that is not a fact. that's your opinion, which many, including myself disagree with. the stuff Myles wrote and performed with the Mayfield Four was just awesome. I have both their Epic (as in the label) releases and love them both. I'm anxiously awaiting his solo side project he's working on while the other guys are doing the creed reunion.
It's unbelievable that this man admitted in front of Rick Beato, he doesn't think himself as a good guitar player. During the nineties shred like this was a rare virtue. It's even better than Mark Tremonti.
i wouldn't say he's better than tremonti, but i do like him more. but i think it's really nice and humble that he gives mark the single guitar role in alter bridge. this guy's a sick singer as well
@somewayout I haven't seen it, but I guess Myles does a section on Tremonti's instructional video. If you're looking for more Myles guitar work, that may be the place.
not sure I'd say that they do things the other "can't" do. both are very skilled guitarists. I think it's more accurate to say that Myles excels at some things more than Mark and Mark excels at some things more than Myles. they complement each other extremely well and is a large part of what makes alter bridge such a phenomenal band. check out this vid v=z_DAPhOy2Fk at 2:19 (mark and myles dual lead/solo whatever you wanna call it) then at 3:02 it pick up and they show a close of myles playing.
The video can't be from 1990 - there's a Peavey 5150 head in the background which they only started making in 1991. I'd trust the people saying it was '92.
Yeah, it's a matter of guitar knowledge, and it's almost pretty obvious that Myles knows more. He plays jazzy kinda stuff, has better tone, doesn't always play fast (Mark does, even if it's a slow song), has better taste in selecting the notes And plays cleaner. Mark's great, writes awesome riffs, and I loved his solo in Find the Real, but many people would tell ya Myles is better. I hate comparing guitarists n' saying someone's better, but at least we can say Myles isn't far from Mark's level
what makes you think that he doesn't have as good technique and phrasing now as he did then? when does he really ever show it? he doesn't. he willingly takes a backseat to Mark. he throws out a solo every now and then, but nothing like this, so there really is no basis to say he isn't as good now.
Yep it's from his Citizen Swing days :D I just saw the video you uploaded and couldn't believe it was this, I love this tune aswell. No idea why MCRN said it was from Blackbird!!??
LOL! I met Myles and didn't have the guts to ask him about this vid. He knows it's out there and people may laugh, but look, he's fuckin talented. LONG LIVE ALTER BRIDGE!
@somewayout i think what sets them apart is tha tremonti does very typical rock things, but he does them exceptionally, and Myles does Jazz influenced things, as you ca tell from listening to the Blackbird solo and the solo to Isolation too. myles is a lot more methodical than Mark as well, he looks very carefully at the chords and structures before attemptig anything, whereas Mark just rips
@jseifert07 copied and pasted from a 2009 interview with Mark: "Notwithstanding the fact that Myles plays guitar and Scott didn’t. Were you particularly looking for a singer who played? No, absolutely not. When I called Myles I had no idea he could play the guitar like he does. I’m telling you honestly, I think he’s a much better guitar player than I am." in black and white. he did say that.
@somewayout Mark never said that! He said that Myles is a way better improviser than he is. When it comes down to the technical stuff, Myles has not a thing on Mark. They are both very extreme guitarist in different fields, that is why Myles doesn't play as many fast licks in AB, but that's where Mark shines.
Stop comparing whos better. Myles has said in an interview he doesn't understand why people need to relate music to sport; in response to someone asking him when will we see a guitar duel from himself and mark. Also, if their styles were any different to what they are, alter bridge would be too. IMO myles is a much better musician anyway. A true front man, and the most modest guy in the world.
Lol... Jules is lucky ;) Myles is so great! And he hasn't changed that much, really. Thank god, he changed the outfit and the hair though ;) but he looks the same, and sound the same. And he is still just AMAZING. Such a humble man! CUTE @ 2:21 :)

This is amazing! Imagine if Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti were in a band... Oh wait. They are.
Man, he is not just playing or singing, he is doing both, and perfectly...
Myles is a very very talented musician... keep rocking man !
I would love to see Myles reacting to this video. This is gold! He looks so young and adorable. I like this guy even more now, so talented.
Caroline Souza check out the video from the Future Song fund raiser. He talks about this on that one.
Which one, please, I have watched several and he never does. I'm A huge fan and it started right here!
LOL wow! Myles would probably cringe at this, being such a young performer here and now being such a well-rounded musician and singer, but that was pretty awesome. I would complain that he's so overlooked as a guitarist (he has such a great blues feel that you don't learn, you're born with it) but that's only because he's got golden pipes that captivates anyone who listens to him sing.
Same goes with John Mayer
The song is "You See It" by the old band of Myles Kennedy, Citizen Swing :D

Lord, the solo. He couldn't only be a wonderful singer, he has to be a wonderful guitar player !
this guy was born to music.
@somewayout Dude, his blackbird solo is already incredible! Just because it isn't fast or very technical doesn't mean it isn't as good as it could've been. He did exactly what he was trying to do with it. He put the emotion into the solo which is the goal of a guitarist.

only difference in Myles' appearance between then and now:
then: absolutely adorable
now: hot and sexy
lmao. :)

How in the world did I miss this for so long?!?! That solo was great Myles, dude, sir!!
Myles's wife is so lucky, who wouldn't marry him? He's so damn cute and nice :3
Watch his interview with James LaBrie if you haven't already, it's awesome.

"You See It" from Myles days with Citizen Swing from the album Cure Me With the Groove. The studio version is posted .
Cool vid. The Peavey 5150 behind him suggests that this is from at least 1991; which was their first year of production. FYI ;)
Yes. This song is called "You see it". It's from "Cure me with the groove", first album of Citizen Swing:)
Ok, fast runs on point and all that jazz, but the staccatos in the solo are worth highlighting! It's not easy at all to do it in a tasteful way.
