    I love how they use the soundscape to convey entering the shadow world of the wraiths.
    As soon as Frodo puts on the Ring, the movie score and ambient noises just abruptly vanish and are replaced with a cold emptiness, where every sound feels like it's trespassing on forbidden grounds, as if it's the only sound being made in the entire world.
    Because such is the Void in which the wraiths truly exist.
    No sound, no smell, no taste, no touch.
    Only emptiness.
    And as soon as Frodo finally manages to take off the Ring, the score and ambient noises flood back into being, as if they never left.
    Good stuff.

    This version of the nazgul is easily scarier than the ones in the live action trilogy. While the Peter Jackson nazgul are imposing, and definitely not something you want to mess with... They seem like they're just men in robes. They don't display many supernatural qualities outside of being able to detect when the ring is put on and that wail they make. They walk into the room in Bree whereas these ones silently appeared from thin air. They approached at Weathertop openly and directly, while these ones were almost invisible while slowly skulking forward. The way they move, the sounds they make, and the supernatural abilities they use make them seem like the only human thing about them is their shape.
    The Jackson nazgul just seem like badass, mildly supernatural warriors. The Bakshi nazgul seem like terrifying demonic spirits taking human shape.

      I think you sell 2000s Nazguls too short. Their terror causing abilities were quite well demonstrated. On top of that necessary their abilities but their aggressive manners and methods that sells their presence.

    I actually missed this part in the books from the fellowship live action movie. I know it's dumb and he doesn't have a chance, but it shows Frodo has a lot more mettle that he's willing to throw down with the Witch King. He even stabs him successfully. They definitely toned down Frodo's pluck in the movies.

      @@Bauglir100 THAT counted as a "stab"? Looks more like he got parried and at most Frodo's dagger gave the Witch King a papercut. There was no stabbing animation. He slashed at the Witch King and the WK basically repelled Frodo's arm and dagger with his left arm and chest. At 00:40 the Witch King kind of "chest bumps" Frodo's dagger away. Tell me how that was a stab.

    I love Bakshi's version of LOTR because Frodo has balls just like in the books. In Peter Jackson's films Frodo seems more like a helpless idiot being led from one place to another.

    • @samuraisharkie

      I disagree that he seems like a helpless idiot. He’s a hobbit who has never fought once in his life, volunteering himself in a death quest that is killing him and explicitly gets more difficult every single step he takes. The worst the PJ films do is make Frodo send Sam away, which would have never happened and I’m still not sure why the hell anyone thought it was a good idea. Other than that it does well- the point of his character was that he was gentle and averse to fighting, he wasn’t an imposing badass or anything. He has more “pluck” in the books, though, I will agree. That said, Frodo in the books pretty much does what is shown in the PJ movies, all save for dropping the sword. Frodo dives down in fear the moment the Witch King advances, swipes at his feet, is stabbed, and swoons, only just barely succeeding in taking off the Ring before he loses strength. The face off here IS very cool though.

    Wish Frodo had kept more of his pluck as seen here. Hes supposed to be patient and gentle, but also has an iron will that refuses to succumb to evil. At least until he was right in the middle of Saurons domain and couldnt help himself, but no mortal could at that state.

    • @samuraisharkie
      @samuraisharkie 2 місяці тому

      I think you have the most well worded complaint of all the others here. Frodo doesn’t need to have fight scenes, that’s not really where his strength lies, and of course he tends to be averse to violence, but he also has a very strong will and is defiant to the very last. And he is more than willing to defend himself or his friends if he’s pushed into a corner. I think Elijah did a great job with what he was given, but Peter Jackson hacked off just a bit too much of Frodo’s, as you well put it, pluck. He doesn’t need to be as ready for battle or smart with tactic as Pippin or Merry, nor as headstrong and brave as Sam, but he was certainly not devoid of outward show of defiance. If anything, I think the Flight to the Ford scene could have been done the way it was with just a little extra scene with Frodo at least showing some sort of attempt at resistance, even if it was just him weakly and deliriously attempting to grab his little dagger.

      I get what Christian Johnson is saying, but it was foolish for him to attack the Witch King so confidently. Also, I just wanted to point out that Frodo basically got parried and riposted. It's like if Darkwraiths in Dark Souls 1 were able to parry you. That would make people rage.
