2021 Triumph Street Triple R // first impressions

    The Street Triple's reputation precedes it. For as long as I've been into motorcycles, I've known it as a bike that handles like a dream, packs way more punch than other bikes of comparable displacement, and has a headlight design that apparently half of the riding populace dislike. However, I didn't truly grasp what a remarkable machine this is until I actually rode this one. That 765cc Moto2 triple (up from 675cc as of 2017) is the star of the show, offering more than enough around-town grunt at the low end, and eye-watering acceleration at the top, made all the more satisfying by a factory-standard quick shifter. Wrap it all up in one of the sharpest-handling packages on the road, and you've got an upper-middleweight naked sportbike that's damn near flawless. And yes, I even think the headlights are beautiful.

    I was ripping through the North Yorkshire moors tonight en route to the Whitby bike night and I saw some pedestrians and cyclists and I thought about twisting the throttle and blatting past but then I thought, what would Van Blamm do? He would be more respectful and considerate … and so was I! 🇬🇧👍

    I completely agree with you on the looks of this bike. I love it and I understand that it's subjective...but it's hard for me to comprehend someone thinking the front end of this bike is ugly but the other nakeds are good looking.

    For the 2020 and newer models, the R and RS share the exact same motor. Same cam profile, same tune, etc...
    The difference in power is only at the top. They make the same low end and midrange, but they hold the R back after 6500rpm, by shutting the throttlebodies to 81%, even when you have the throttle pinned at 100%. The RS throttle at 100%, keeps the bike at 100% all the way to redline. Thats the difference, the ride by wire tables.
    Good news is that you can quickly undo that and restore full power to the R model in about 15 minutes with the TuneECU app and an Android phone. Quick easy hp increase.

    I love that segment comparing the front headlights to it's rivals.
    The triumph front looks way better than the Suzuki and KTM.

    I have a Daytona 675, and yeah. Triples are addictive! The Daytona’s only weakness as a road bike is that the suspension is really hard - I’m thinking of changing my shocks and springs to make the bike more useable. I also wish the Daytona had cruise control. Sometimes you really want to open her up and listen to that engine (it sounds like Thor dropped his hammer on his foot) but other times you just want to sit at the speed limit and not worry about speed cameras. Even so, as a useable sports bike - glorious.

    I just bought one of these, though I have to wait two weeks before I can pick her up.
    Man, I can't wait. It's the 2021 765r version that I've bought (bonus, only 352 miles on the clock), and every review I've seen says the same, that it's a great little motorcycle.
    I'm like a little child waiting for Christmas to come around already.

    Can’t wait til they finish reworking GW pkwy. Thanks for this street triple review and the other one you did. Since my speed twin was wrecked, I’ve been considering a move to the street triple rather than another twin. The all-rounder aspect of this thing is making it tempting.

    Entertaining review of my favorite Triumph. Well done as usual.
    I would have an extremely difficult time parting with my 2014 Street Triple R. I have briefly considered a current model but I love the analogue throttle too much.

    Just got myself a Street Triple RS a couple weeks back. On the looks side of things, I actually really like the headlamp design, what's not so great is the long neck sticking out between the tank and the headlamp, at certain angles it looks bad, I wish they designed the headlamp to be attached to the front forks and flush to it.

    Totally agree with your valid point about the opposition bikes headlights in contrast to street triple r. I get a lot of enjoyment riding to work and you seldom exceed 8000 rpm . Fabulous fueling 👍

    I wasn’t a fan of street triples front end when i looked them online in photos and videos. I also wasn’t the fan of mt07 new look when i saw them online. But when i saw both of them in real world, i started to like them. Yeah i have started to like street triples front end more than that of mt07’s and mt09’s but both of them have this uneque factor which no other bikes has. Especially street triple and speed triple, i’ve started to love them, they are instantly reconisable and with these new gen versions they look awesome with those drl’s like awesome eye brows.

      Modern sportbike designs in general are starting to grow on me too. I'm wondering how good we'll think these look 20 years from now, whether they'll prove to be timeless or just a flash in the pan.

    I agree. The competition’s headlights are hideous. Not in love with the bug eyes, but they are the least objectionable…by a long way…and could almost grow to like them.

    Fantastic review and agree about the dash 👍
    I love the Q shifter and blipper on these 😉 I found that I was able to get a smooth change under normal acceleration by closing the throttle play a little...but that might just be my interpretation 😅 I'm torn between a second hand Striple R or a new old stock Tuono 660 🤔

    This is a great and thorough review, awesome!
    I had a 2015 STR RX (675) and the gauges and mirrors remind me of that bike. The TFT display on the RS models is game changing though and allows you to somewhat customize the dash layout.
    The bug eyes have grown on me and I'm now a fan. The leaner, meaner look of the '21 model headlights does look better than the ones on my '18 765 RS. I will never understand why the US version has the massive incandescent turn signals vs the cool slim LED ones it comes with in the UK.
    I just fitted a SC Project race exhaust and it really makes a huge difference, not so much performance wise, but how you feel riding the bike. The Arrow exhaust I had added early on took the bike from "sewing machine" to "louder sewing machine", where the SC exhaust makes it sound like race bike, gets you grinning ear to ear. I do agree and wish they would add cruise control and heated grips like they do on the speed triple, but that thing literally cost 2x the cost of the street R.

      Thanks! I bet that exhaust sounds amazing, SC makes a really good product. I like that each trim level has the right dash for the amount of electronics they have; the old-school layout is great for the more spartan R, and the TFT display is definitely optimal for using the extra features of the RS.
      Riding this bike made me think it'd be a great choice to take up Berthoud Pass, which I hope you've done on yours!

      The US regulations don't allow LED turn signals as of now. Hence the old school, bigger bulb ones on almost all the models sold in the States.

      @@SiddharthaSingh1989 Not true, it's more that Triumph didn't design a larger sized led for DOT regulations. My Speed Twin has led turn signals on both ends.

    I know I'm late to the party, but I sold my speed twin last year... but missed triumph. Got me a Goldwing for touring, but I have TWO test rides this weekend for a Street Triple RS and a Rocket 3 GT for "mess around with" bikes for single riding. I'm stupid excited and can't wait.

      Nice! Between the two, I think I'm more fond of the Rocket, but if you already have a Goldwing then getting the Street Triple would get you a more well-rounded stable. Can't go wrong either way.

      @@VanBlamm That's sort of what I was thinking. My wife will also be picking up her 2nd motorcycle since I got her riding last summer and she's been riding non-stop, including through this winter using heated gear. She's looking between a Bonnie Speedmaster and a Tiger 850 Sport and has test rides scheduled as well. Our current stable is the 6th Gen Goldwing, a Spyder RT, and her Rebel 500, but the Spyder and Rebel are going on the chopping block.

    I was hoping you'd do a comparison to your Speed Twin. How'd it feel in comparison? Tough one to make as they are in entirely different classes, I know.

      I may still do a video talking about this, as both bikes would make excellent do-it-all rides. Just depends on if you want to focus more on performance or personality. Surprisingly, the STripleR was much more comfortable over a long day of riding, thanks to the softer seat. It definitely encourages you to rev it out, whereas in comparison the Speed Twin simply tolerates being revved out and prefers short bursts of torque.

      @@VanBlamm I have a Street Twin. I love it, but also find it very limited on the highway. Most of my normal riding roads are 45 mph to 55mph speed limit twisty back country roads. I am interested in upgrading to a Speed Twin, Street Triple, bigger naked bike, or sport/naked bike. So I too would be interested in seeing a Street Triple vs Speed Twin comparison. I test road a Kawasaki Z900rs and did not like how on/off, snatchy the throttle was and how it revved so high for such little speed…even in 6th gear. If the Z900rs was geared like the ninja 1000sx, and as well mannered in the throttle dept, that would be the bike for me…even though it does not look to be built as well (at least based on looks) as Triumphs. Torn…do not want to loose the great handling, tourque, sound, and back road character of the street twin…but I do want more with out loosing what is so great about a smaller nimble bike.

    Fantastic video review💥! I have a question🤔: Would you consider the 2021 model significantly superior to the 2012 model, and if so, in what aspects? Additionally, as a bonus for next time, could you compare the Street Triple R with its primary competitors like the Yamaha MT-09 or the KTM 890 Duke R? Keep up the excellent work!

    If it works out i plan to close a deal on one of those coming weekend. 😊
    Test drove the RS last weekend and was impressed. Did not explore sports or track modes yet though. Could get to grips with it and i say that as a noob driver (with EU license). The RS, though very nice to drive, is not worth the extra cash to me, so will go for the R instead. I like the analog tacho/lcd speedo of the R much more than the TFT screen if the RS. And for the rest it is extra stuff on the RS that can only be appreciated by the experienced riders on the racetrack. I mainly plan to drive it on the road and the R should be more than plenty.
    With the R I will get a bike which allows me to discover more and more of it’s potential as my experience grows and I am sure I will not get fed up with it soon. Will take some rider trainings though in order to be able to handle emergency situations better. Maybe even a track day.
    I test drove the Trident 660 as well but found it almost too easy. But I really liked it too.. Am afraid however, I will lose interest quickly. And the Street triple did feel like more “premium”. And more like the bike that has more potential to unlock without being too overpowering. But if they give me a Trident as loaner bike or rental bike I will not complain at all…..

      Nice! The Street Triple R is one of the best motorcycles full stop, not just among naked sportbikes. I recommend professional training and track time for any bike, but especially on the STripleR, as it is juuust a little too much for public roads when pushed to the limit. When ridden sensibly, however, it makes virtually any type of riding an absolute blast.
      And I agree with you about the RS; it adds componentry more advanced than I need, and loses the analog tach I love.

      @@VanBlamm It worked out. 😊. They had a black Street Triple R now in the showroom. Did not expect this as it was mentioned they only expected one to arrive by Feb 2022. Had a good look at the color scheme and……
      Long story short….. that Street Triple R that was in the showroom will be mine. Weather permitting, delivery will be in 2 weeks.
      Of course they also have to order and bolt on the extra bits which I ordered with it, most importantly the tinted small windscreen, underfloor engine cover, and heated grips.
      Did decide against ordering the bike for the start of next season, as they showed me the delivery status from Triumph… if you order one now you have no guarantee when it will ever arrive in Europe from Thailand.

    It's a great bike, comfortable for my arthritic knees too. I fancy a 1050 speed triple though, as I prefer more torque and less revs from a bigger engine. I am also torn between that and a speed twin.

      I'd love to ride a 1050 Speedy for those same reasons. The new 1200 Speed Triple, while surely amazing, is such an enormous step up in power that I don't see how I could hope to enjoy all of it on real roads.

      I'd be way more likely to get in trouble on the Street Triple R, that's for sure. The Trident is a bike I could safely use more of, more of the time, which is its own type of satisfaction. The Street Triple, while a great all-rounder, does encourage you to push it, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your environment and personality. I think if I were buying one, I'd get the Trident and give it the quick-shifter and a nice exhaust, and maybe try and squeeze 5 more hp out of it. On public roads, that would offer ~90% of the fun of a STripleR with like ~70% of the risk.
      If I wanted to spend any time on the track though it's Street Triple all the way.

    Excellent review. Well done. I currently ride a 2020 SV 650, and I've always appreciated the amount of torque it has in every gear, throughout the rev range. Would you say the R is similar? Thanks.

      Thank you! I haven't ridden the SV650, but I suspect it's a bit punchier than the Triumph down really low. Once you get a third of the way up the rev range (~4K) however, that's where the Triumph wakes up.

      Under max acceleration I did have the front wheel take a hop or two in first gear. I'm sure clutch-ups would be easy but I didn't want to try figuring that out on someone else's bike.

    Hi! Quick question. Performance and handling wise, how much is the R different than the RS?

      In my opinion, you'd have to be a serious expert rider to notice the difference, and even then you'd only appreciate it on the track. The RS allows for slightly finer adjustments to the suspension. Its front brake pistons are a tiny bit bigger. It revs a couple RPM higher. The biggest difference is that the RS has a TFT display and more flexible electronics, although most of that configurability is for the benefit of track riding.

      A little bit, yeah. On freeways I found myself wanting to cruise at either 4,000 or 6,000, but not in between. I figure it just has to do with the harmonics of the stock exhaust.

    How does this bike compare to the Speed twin?

      The STripleR is focused on top-end rush and primo handling. The Speed Twin is focused on personality and bottom-end/mid-range torque, which are more important to me personally. Surprisingly, I found the Triple to be more comfortable for all-day riding.

    I own a 2022 R , I would never upgrade it to a later model because I hate TFTs.
    I ride to escape the Smart phone screen and would never buy a bike with a Spy, I mean Smart phone TFT... Yuk

      I use to own a Suzuki GSXF-1000. 165 hp top speed of 185mph. A nice bike , but unless I was speeding way over the speed limit, It was not much fun . It was great for The Tail of the Dragon, but boring as a day to day bike. I traded it for my 2019 Indian Chief Darkhorse, a heavy bike at 750 pounds, but extremely comfortable on long trips and with its SPORTS MODE, still fun to ride without breaking the speed limit so much.
