Almost all airline maintenance runs 24/7 365. There are no weekends or holidays, if it is your day to work you work unless you are taking vacation, personal time, or a sick day. When you first start you will normally work third shift for a LONG time before you are able to get off it.
And if it takes you 14 years to get to dayshift and you get laidoff two years later,..you get to go to another company and start back on Midnights all over again!!
Glenn, A couple of responses. Absolutely this video is edited. But on your first comment, about raising the engine before lowering it. It is not out of order. After attaching the chains they raise it a few inches before moving it out. On the different engine, we shot two nights so we could get all of the shots we needed. Again not trying to mislead, or cheat on the editing just trying to capture everything. We did take one liberty editing that you haven't caught yet. see if you can find it.
As a lifelong Fresno resident, I can tell you there's a metro area of over a million people that's is super excited to finally have Southwest coming in in April after decades of wanting them! Next I hope the add more cities as covid let's up. Denver and Vegas are great but we'd love new cities we don't have at all yet!
I've delivered oil and aircraft parts to different airlines at different airports that were in for maintenance. Sometimes I would get escorted onto the tarmac to deliver to the plane, specifically for wheels with the tires mounted already go. The tires are huge. Even the front tire for an MD-11 is huge. Delivered to JFK airport for that one.
Love watching how things work, great video! once its removed, does SW itself do any work on the actual engine or a third part for whatever it needs done?
You could easily make a car that lasts as long as an aircraft it just costs half a million dollars and a team of specialists will inspect and replace anything thats slightly out of spec every 3-4 days enjoy the bill
No, this can be done. Volvo did it in the 80s with their 700 series. Unlike a passenger jet though, a car is a fashion accessory. Once it's out of fashion, it's in the bin, no matter how much life it has remaining.
They missed the point. The engines akrwady been installed. They don’t need another bolt. They need to backtrack to discover where there’s a bolt missing on the engine mounts, and then install it. Dropping a bolt it won’t hurt it.
Always freaks me out to know that engines are held in place - and thus transfer the forward energy to the airplane frame - by only a few bolts. I would say, very serious bolts.
I like to see videos like this. Southwest should do more videos in detail about this and about how they service and maintenance the airplanes. Delta has a great video of how they service and maintain and retrofit their planes
the motors actually looked cute and happy after the cowling is removed, I'm sure they are very complicated, perhaps more complicated than say an old four-row radial... but alot less intimidating by the looks :)
Hey are u not working right now? I`m asking because I`m 46 and planning on going back to school for aircraft maintenance here in Illinois but I hear alot of things from the older mechanics to study something else. What do u think? I`d like to work in line maintenance. I know it wont be right away to get that position though. I`m worried after I graduate because of my age and being a rookie that no one will hire me. Also I heard from someone else that Chicago isnt a desirable place to work in because of the bad weather and being so expensive to live here that not too many AMT`s want to come here, is that true? It`s good for me because I live in chicago and if the airlines are having trouble getting techs I might end up getting hired and getting a line maintenance position after all.
I'm a 30 year AMT, I wouldn't recommend now getting into the airline industry what-so-ever. It used to be a good job, not anymore. Airlines like SWA want to outsource more AMT jobs overseas or 3rd party hack shops. They treat AMTs like a cost they don't want to pay anymore, witness the nearly 6 years SWA has slow walked a contract for AMT's at SWA. They also harass and threaten those that find maintenance discrepancies. Go into diesel work, they can't fly them to south america or china. At an airline, you'll be working mids, weekends, and holidays until you retire. Just my 2 cents from the inside.
You can always find work in contract maintenance for about half the top pay at SWA. Not steady though and can be laid off when work is slow. Willing to move?
Once the airplane is taken outside is the engine test run and if so for how long and at what power setting? In the Air Force we used to test run jet engines after a replacement for about a half hour. Also the afterburner had to be lit and left on for about 2 minutes.

If nothing goes wrong and an experienced crew , 8 hours is lucky. Normally it should be two turns if you need some extra engine seals or something. Overnight is the norm. Or the pylon has damage or something bad like corrosion , it could sit around for a couple days or a week or longer . It really depends on a lot of factors . But overnight is what they want .
Awesome video! What's the engine change for? Because I know that Southwest only operates 737s, and all 737s use CFM engines. And what's the oil that the mechanics are pouring into the engine, near the end of the video, for?
Engines are limited by hours on wing, or if the periodic boroscope of the compressors, turbine, or hot sections show damage (like FOD, erosion, or cracks in the combustion can), or high oil consumption, lots of reasons they are pulled. SWA has power-by-the-hour, meaning they outsource engine overhaul, no in house engine overhaul.
The methods used on DC-10 191 was approved by the MD engineering and AA management that authorized the fork lift used to lift the engine up to the wing and hang it. AA engineers and AA management wanted to save time, which is all they care about, money.

Sorry, at 1:01 the engine is shown being raised, at that point the engine should have been mated with the mount fitting, which you couldn't raise it farther, then. The engines are removed for various reasons. The engine might have damage or it's simply time for a scheduled overhaul. The oil lubricates the engine.

Bill Skoros SW does do component changes and inspections on their engines. They do also ship them out to manufacture depending on the situation.
I m also prepared for becoming aircraft maintenance engineer
In a nice way Of asking , how come you guys haven’t updated all the paint jobs on some of the planes ?

Just imagine you’re putting a new engine on and you look to the ground and wonder, hmm we’re does this bolt go?..
They would most likely have to U/s the bolt and get a new one from the store, they would refer to illustrated part catelogues and MM
Go to stores and get another one
