Giving in to Alcohol Waterfall/Rain Technique and Fourth of July Tumbler... Happy Independence Day!

  • All the times I had seen this alcohol waterfall or rain technique, I hadn't been all that impressed by it and didn't really want to try it. Until, that is, I saw this video by Rae's Turquoise Turtle: • Perfectly Purple Water... ... I thought the results she got were stunning, and I decided I would try it after all, but with a slight twist -- I decided that in spite of the myriad 4th of July cups already being made on UA-cam right now, I'd reluctantly join that fray as well. This video is the result. My only regret is that the brass and silver metallics that were so beautiful in the creation portion of the video disappeared when I sealed the cup with clear spray before resining. Next time I use this method -- and there will be a next time -- I'll go straight to resin once the alcohol inks are dry.
    Send me a nice letter (I'll write back - promise!)!! I may even send you a small gift... maybe... you never know!

    I love Swirls! Mostly swirls of color, but really any swirls at all - I think they add a beauty and grace to everything. So after I started making soap a few years ago, and needing some sort of biz name that didn't sound like everyone else's version of suds-r-us, I decided on Luxinda Swirl. Luxinda is a twist on my real name, and I quickly started putting swirls of color in all of my handmade soaps.
    Now I'm branching out a bit, and I want to keep adding swirls to everything I do!

    This Texan would’ve adored one big ol’ Lonestar on this cup. I love it anyway! That touch of sparkle is perfecto! I hate that you have to apologize and tell anyone not to freak out about “waste” of your OWN products, but I’m just a little tired of entitlement attitude altogether. There’s a country song called “Mind Your Own Business” that comes to mind all of the time, nearly hourly these days! Anyhoobastank, great design! I love it!!!💜

    Rub that heart down with some chrome dust!
    I think if you subbed in some blending solution with the alcohol the metallic may have stayed better I have one I did all in blues on deck that I think I used it with because I used an alloy.... but I currently have vacation brain and can't remember lol also all that mixed in the bottom of your cookie sheet probably would have made a kick ass purple version! But if you are like me you aren't always ready with another prepped cup! It looked great it the end you maintained a way better separation than I probably would have! • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому +1

      Well, it depends on what is too quick. This video isn’t a very good example of the Waterfall or Rain method. (I get much better at it later on
      ua-cam.com/video/WTYMkX6NlkE/v-deo.html) But in general you want the alcohol to dry quickly while you’re heating it with a heat gun, so 91% isopropyl alcohol works really well.

  • @debrajol3585
    @debrajol3585 3 роки тому +1

    Heya 👋. That waterfall is a beauty!!! I wonder if you had done alcohol in the center & drops of blanco/white with 1 or 2 silver rings how that would be.
    I don’t dilute the metal colors, the spot I put it on I’ll drop 3, 4 or 5 drops so it makes it all the way around & touches itself. When the heat/dryer is on BARELY move it from far back and it’ll make the lines like a painted desert. Also lol I do the alcohol from the needle tip for the whole thing bc it still gets the cup wet without too much wasted & use a pipette to suck up the alcohols from the tray to redistribute as possible. I’m sure glad alcohol is back in the stores too!
    That heart cup is such a bummer 😭 Heat was the answer but days later it’s not gonna help. Chuck it in the f*ck it bucket .. 😂😂😂. make sure it has an inch of pure acetone in there & put the lid on and come back tomorrow. The cup will be bubbly & all peel off. Just the bottom has to be in sitting in the acetone bath for the chemical reaction. Any spray paint left on take a green scrubbie & work it a bit over the bucket. Put the lid tightly on for next time. You probably know how to strip 💃 but for anyone reading this - you don’t need paper towels, foil sheets and a baggy. Just an inch of acetone & however many cups that can fit. Skim the junk and reuse. When there’s no more uses, leave the lid off to evaporate. Clean the bucket and start again 👌
    Ok I remember Chico and the Man 😯.. I was pretty young but I sat in front of our black & white tv 📺 glued to it.. seems like Rockford Files was right after. We had to go to bed but we’d crawl to our doorways and watch it until we’d get caught 😁

    Maybe on the first cup you could heat up the heart like another person said to remold it to the cup? And then paint the whole thing white. Or just tape everything off and paint the heart or tape the heart and paint the cup. I think it’s the two glitters together that’s making it not so nice. Either one on it’s own would be pretty!

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, that Orange-y glitter is just ugly (only my opinion - I don’t much like that color anyway). Painting the whole thing is interesting, hadn’t thought about that. 🤔 Thank you!

    Can a hair dryer heat it up enough to push it down and lay something heavy

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому +1

      Maybe, but the heart piece was soooo ugly that I had no interest in trying to save it. Using all of the glitters together was just a huge mistake 😅😅😅 But if the heart had been really beautiful, I might have tried heating it up then wrapping it tightly to encourage it to bend more and form to the tumbler.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  3 роки тому

      Thanks! The easiest answer for the heart cup is to strip it and not use that orange glitter next time, but I’m not at all sure that acetone would effectively strip off the heart. That’s a lot of extra resin stuck on there…

  • @Oonagh72
    @Oonagh72 3 роки тому +1

    Don’t finish that ugly tumbler. I say that as a person who almost always loves “fails”. I can say I love the all over glitter, that heart just destroys the entire thing.
    I do love the Fourth of July cup. It is amazing. This weekend I discovered that a shiny top coat doesn’t necessarily make matte shiny. I sealed something with matte Mod Podge. When I put may put my shiny poly on top (I don’t use resin) it was not shiny again. I had to do the same thing you did, and add some glitter to my poly to get some shine back. I had read that glossy poly may not stick to matte poly because of the mattifiers they use. One would think it would be the other way around.

    • @Luxinda

    I had the same problem with the metallics and clear coat! How long do i have to wait for the alcohol inks to dry before epoxy.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +1

      Actually, I don’t think you have to wait very long. According to Rae over at Raes Turquoise Turtle, who never seals her alcohol inks before applying resin, really just an hour or so. I’ve stopped sealing mine, but I admit that I tend to let my ink cups sit overnight before I apply resin - probably not necessary, but I’m still overly cautious.

    It didn’t turn out as beautiful as your other cups and I don’t like Mr.Nola’s epoxy it hardens to fast and it’s hard to work with try and take the heart off

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed - won’t use their epoxy again for this type of project (at least I learned something - LOL!). I don’t know if I can pry the heart off after sticking it on with E6000 glue. It may just be stuck, but I can try the acetone bucket method of stripping described by DebraJo here in the comments. That might succeed.
