WATCH MORE - Joan Is Awful had some hidden easter eggs. But how is the entire Black Mirror universe connected? Here's our TAKE: ua-cam.com/video/Ub43wDzqPjg/v-deo.html
Imagine being the actor cast in the "real-life" role... "You look plain enough for people to believe you're not really an actor. Congratulations, you've got the job!"
Deeper reality: they are saying it doesn't matter if you think they suck, because they have the money and the power to keep going and no one can stop them (yay capitalism)
@meganfetterly1544 a pretty big "boom" at the location of their servers might do it 🤔 as far as how to make the "boom" happen without hurting anyone or getting caught... ...but if I had that ability, I'd visit the Meta/Facebook/Instagram severs first 🚒

The fact that this episode also touches on how our search information can used, this video being uploaded RIGHT AFTER I just finished watching said episode is just hilarious to me 😂
The episode is very Meta for sure. As someone who works in Tech, everything they cover has a high probability of being true in the next 5-10 years. Governments are slow to catch up and create regulations to protect their citizens from being exploited by the tech. It’s truly terrifying.
That’s what I say. I’m not against AI. I’m against governments not creating legislations to protect their people from unemployment and therefore extreme poverty.-

Ah dude I love her in Kevin Can F Himself! Truly, I thought nobody was watching it abd it sucks 'cause I think it deserves so much more attention. Thanks for confirming I'm not alone 😅
No, Netflix didn't admit it's awful. Charlie Brooker metaphorically (not literally) called Netflix awful in his TV show and Netflix was willing to air it because Black Mirror makes them a lot of money. As long as people are entertained enough to maintain their subscriptions, Netflix doesn't care if people criticize it. See the recent password sharing controversy - people criticized, people complained, and people signed up for new subscriptions to the tune of hundreds of thousands. Personally, what I do is activate my subscription for a month, watch all the "must see" stuff that has been updated with a new season, then unsubscribe for two or three months until there's enough new content to come back. It's not hard to do; I renew my subscription then immediately, as in less than a minute later, cancel it. It stays active for a month, more than long enough to watch everything I want to watch, and I don't have to remember later to cancel. Also, for anyone who loves Black Mirror and wants something similar, find Inside No. 9 streaming and watch it; it's similar enough while being its own thing. If you want one episode to sample it, 12 Days of Christine is the show's pinnacle, one of the best, most moving pieces of TV I've seen.
Exactly. Like, there is literally an episode about it, 15 Millions Merits. If the system can make money out of its own critic, then they'll go for it, they don't care.
One thing that bugs me is that it’s actually NOT legal for companies to hide crazy things in 500 pages of terms in conditions. It has to be reasonable and the person has to actually know what they’re getting into.
I feel you. But I believe to provide drama and insight to a dystopian future some things of reality has to be given up. After all, law is just a made-up concept that can change over time. So what's to say that we don't throw these rules over board?
From a legal point of view nothing in this episode is possible. There are tons of regulations protecting personal data and all. But still we watched it :)
Just thinking how in Fictive Level One, the show made Joan seem worse than she ‘actually’ was. So Annie-Joan must have been portrayed worse than the real Joan as well. The further into it, the more her life gets distorted and further removed from her real life.
The other day I had a chat with a tech nerd and he was telling me how all the future technologies are aiming towards reaching the singularity. And the more we march towards it the higher the chances of us humans losing control over everything. For example when we sign up for an AI photo app, it clearly says in the terms and conditions that it will use and store the images provided to it in ways we can not even imagine, it presents this to us in a very fancy way that it will enhance our user experience and will make it more easy for us to achieve what we want but in reality we willingly provide permission to them, gradually giving these apps control over us. There was even a hint in the episode "Salma can blow off an Orangutan" about deep fake porn movies all over the internet over which the celebrities have no control.
This is the basis of Dune's Butlerian Jihad, people exploiting other people through thinking machines, robbing the destiny of humanity as a whole. The optimistic side of me hopes that this would turn out like Iain M. Banks The Culture series, humanity (or rather pan-humanity) living care free lives under the subtle control of godlike AI Minds, sort of a retirement resort for the non digital beings, with a bit of excitement (tbf, some might be civilization ending events) every now and then. Sure humans lose much control, but then again, think of it as relinquishing control to your successors or children because the world has left you behind.
Episode 2 was about people and Netflix obsession on creating True Crime documentaries and content. Everyone loves a good mystery. The price that they paid to create that content might be too great.
Not to the mention the real-life victims being depicted (even in “inspired by..” situations) where their pain, trauma, etc. is being exploited for the entertainment of millions
Loch Henry was easily my favorite episode of this new season; I just wish it had a darker ending, something to really drive home how weird the idea of "true crime as entertainment" really is.
Loch Henry was a really good episode. Felt bad for Davis. He is truly traumatised. But he didn't make the doc for Pia he made it for his mum. Such an effed up episode.
I've always curated my watch list and found myself drawn to... the margins. The ones that were cancelled or ended with fading interest to follow. I feel like excersizing restraint and seeking beyond what streaming pushes onto us is a start.
Personally, I thought the episode was below average. Joan is awful was below average 😂 it reminded me of the miley cyrus episode: The celebrity appearance that seemed gratuitous rather than necessary and kind of ruined what was a pretty good idea underneath. The first 20 mins were good, the rest of it was just stupid.
I don't mind some of the wacky episodes, but they need to be done well. Nosedive and USS callister were wacky episodes done well. This and Ashley too episode were poor.
The solution is simple - unsubscribe from the likes of netflix, turn off the tv or pc and read a book. Or go for a walk. Or do ANYTHING else. There is no gun at your head to watch a streaming service. There are other options.
The only thing is, animated shows like Arcane and Voltron and She-Ra are on Netflix...And I _LOVE_ animation, sooo...:P. I am NOT giving up any of my subscriptions to Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime etc _ANY_ time soon!!
I think that if we watch content on these platforms with critical thinking switched on , we can be entertained and learn things too. The important thing is we keep a balance. Let’s read books, let’s go for walks, let’s have a real life and just alternate our pass times!
I love how Black Mirror makes us think, Joan Is Awful was incredible. I would watch this episode over and over again. I love how Black Mirror takes it time to create such powerful episodes.
It’s funny how in Joan Is Awful, it’s explained that viewers were more likely to watch a show depicting them as awful than as awesome, bc the good versions weren’t believable. However, everyone needs better and better looking digital likenesses to portray them. Because people can call themselves awful, but not ugly and frumpy.
Actors guild just went on strike and one open question is the use of AI in films and tv. I think that is the one reason why this episode just nailed it again! That is also why I think this was extremely bold move from Netflix. I would like to know where they stand on in this strike. 🤔

I think you missed the overall point. The show begins to get cheesy and terribly written and corny on purpose mid episode as what we are actually watching is a "show on streamberry". This episode is a middle finger to netflix for the contrived shit they put out and also to those that are entertained by such poor quality. The episode can be viewed 3 different ways. The scene where Joan dumped her shit in the church was not necessarily at all. If they were not intending to mock the church they could have made the scene in a wedding reception on an open field or a banquet all etc . Netflix through that scene was saying Technology is above God and people's faith and they have the authority to mock the house of God and people's faith . You'll never see Hinduism, Muslims,Buddhism mock their holy religious sanctuary in such a way even if it may be a production set.If anyone makes such a mistake their movie or series won't see a day of light or the producers and everyone involved will be rebuke . It's so shocking & shameful to know how the western people can stoop so low just to earn money and run their business by mocking Gods and it's Holy Church.
I canceled Netflix two months ago because it just wasn’t giving value for the cost (plus the greedy family-unfriendly password thing which discriminates against non-standard living arrangements) Thanks for this review of what concepts are present in this rather thin plotted & preachy series. I feel doubly satisfied in my decision to support your content (liking, subbing, letting the ads run, watching to end & commenting) & letting the “spaghettios” fly elsewhere.
There is really nothing to explain. Black Mirror is never what it has an aim to, be, a gut-punching tv show. They always kind of play it safe and stay in shallow waters. Never gets you really scared or wondering. Good entertainment tho.
Purely as a statement about the possible worry and harm of getting AI to come up with something, sometimes it might rock, it might work, it might be popular, but then it might suck big time. Matrix 4 for example, a dud, and not in a long line of previous duds, not by any measure. And consider the way The Orville did an episode where people stuck in an alien's zoo, get freed by - drumroll - the "zoo" of reality TV LOL! This episode Joan is Awful is like Stranger than Fiction taken to another level. For me, Black Mirror is like Twilight Zone or Outer Limits, strange stuff done well.
The thing that got me was that all Source Joan had to do to solve her problem was just be conscientious, positive, and kind to others going forward. She could have changed the narrative herself to "Joan is Fulfilled". She had the choice all along. It should have been very easy, and the results would have been almost instant with the one-day production turnaround for the Streamberry show. There are many people like this--who lament at being labeled a negative or unpleasant person and then lean INTO it, instead of proving everyone wrong by simply being conscientious, positive, and kind to others.
@@Daymickey They would have just filmed her elsewhere. She wasn't just being filmed on her phone. Much like in real life. We are constantly under surveillance, not just from our phones other devices and god knows what else.
46.10 Glitch in the show where both Selma and Joan are hiding in the couches and the subtitles show Shut up., shut up. Yet Joan says it once, and Selma looked surprise, raising her handNot saying anything. Two voices were definitely heard. Yet it seems like a machine for the second voice.Maybe Selma was supposed to say it as well. It seems to be unedited rough cut.
Wow, I thought it was more about TikTok. Like privacy no longer exists because everyone has a camera so your worst moments can always be filmed. You can be docked at any given moment, and recognized because of TikTok.
This season of black mirror was filled with evil things. Only murders blood and demonic things. Joan is awful was the only episode without wierd stuff but it wasn’t that good
Yes, that is the layer they didn't get here. 'Joan is awful' is clearly also hinting at the made-up stories in our minds. We tell ourselves that we're awful and then we create an ego that protects us from the realisation of who we really are.
This show didn't exactly break new ground. South Park did a show about how people who don't read the tearns and conditions for the new iPhone signed away their rights and became the Human Centipad. There are also plenty of inception like stories where there are nested layers of reality. What they did here that I think is interesting is a mix of profiting off of someone's image and likeness without pay or consent (like how colleges profited off of students name, image, and likeness without paying them), made us relate to the "good guy" and gave us a happy ending. Black Mirror is known for its edgy grimdark shows that typically tell the viewers life sucks and the future is a dystopian hellscape we can't fight against. But with the POV character and audience surrogate winning at the end, and getting a happy ending, it's actually a hopeful message that makes the show good.
You guys forget the Black Mirror team =/= Netflix. Netflix just distributes Black Mirror they don't have a say in what the creators make commentary on.
Anyone noticed how almost every security guard was male and a ton of protagonists in certain scenes were female? It actually started to look... very odd.
Best example for 'we don't even care If you critic us, we'll still getting money out of your Show and this is why we are standing above you' ironically, this season ist a huge 'fuck you netflix', but it won't have an Impact on anything
Kinda weak to say that Netflix allowed this episode to air because they don’t think the consumer can change. Companies follow the money. It’s not corporations driving these decisions. It’s literally you.
The acting in this episode was some of the worst I've ever seen. It's almost like they thought casting Salma Hayek was enough to sell it and moved on to the next.
just answering the title question: No, black mirror admits we as people suck, because we are more likely to watch others mishaps and worst moments than something actually good.

Lol. But i suppose they can just chalk it up to makeup and wardrobe. Surely she didn't walk in the audition dressed/looking like that 😂
I think about this when someone is cast as the "fat character" or "ugly character". But you still have to be somewhat attractive to be cast on camera
They were all made up in a decreasing of attractiveness. They can all look great on the red carpet!
Yeah, but then you realize you starred in a Netflix show so would you really pass that up because of your ego?

I had to fast forward through episode three, it was so slow, so long, and so predictable. It was like watching paint dry.
I kinda want them to do a epside that basically parroting what they're doing with the animation part
I canceled Netflix two months ago because it just wasn’t giving value for the cost (plus the greedy family-unfriendly password thing which discriminates against non-standard living arrangements)
Thanks for this review of what concepts are present in this rather thin plotted & preachy series. I feel doubly satisfied in my decision to support your content (liking, subbing, letting the ads run, watching to end & commenting) & letting the “spaghettios” fly elsewhere.
I think that it would have been cool if they ended the episode without revealing the „real“ Joan.
For me, Black Mirror is like Twilight Zone or Outer Limits, strange stuff done well.
youtube is kinda like a black mirror version of netflix
I loved this episode. Easily the best of the season
I really like how that cinematography changes once we leave Fictive Level 1
1 loch henry
2 😈 79
3 joan is awful
4 beyond the sea
5 mazey day
The thing that got me was that all Source Joan had to do to solve her problem was just be conscientious, positive, and kind to others going forward.
She could have also turned her phone off for a day or two. No more source material. Problem solved.
@@Daymickey They would have just filmed her elsewhere. She wasn't just being filmed on her phone. Much like in real life. We are constantly under surveillance, not just from our phones other devices and god knows what else.
They would have just found another person. Source Joan is picked precisely because she doesn't do that.
Even if she had been a “good person”, the show still would’ve twisted her words to make her sound bad.
Just found this channel. Great take!! Thank you 🙌👏
46.10 Glitch in the show where both Selma and Joan are hiding in the couches and the subtitles show Shut up., shut up. Yet Joan says it once, and Selma looked surprise, raising her handNot saying anything. Two voices were definitely heard. Yet it seems like a machine for the second voice.Maybe Selma was supposed to say it as well. It seems to be unedited rough cut.
Ending 1899 after 1 season is unforgivable
I just use Netflix to binge Seinfeld and Kenan & Kel
I'm finally going to voluntarily watch some "Black Mirror" via this episode. Also, Love: Anne Frances Murphy!
Wow, I thought it was more about TikTok. Like privacy no longer exists because everyone has a camera so your worst moments can always be filmed. You can be docked at any given moment, and recognized because of TikTok.
that dude lied. This whole season seems like it was written by AI
This season of black mirror was filled with evil things. Only murders blood and demonic things. Joan is awful was the only episode without wierd stuff but it wasn’t that good
This episode isn't fun to watch anymore when it ended up happening in real life as of recently.
so the quantum computer is basically the tree of life
Yes, that is the layer they didn't get here. 'Joan is awful' is clearly also hinting at the made-up stories in our minds. We tell ourselves that we're awful and then we create an ego that protects us from the realisation of who we really are.
Joan Is Awful is awesome! One of my favorite episodes.
The best episode of the season and what you would expect from Black Mirror.
Oh god - doesn't bode well for the other episodes that I've not seen yet...
The worst, is how netflix removed all the nuanced storytelling of Blackmirrow, for broader appeal. F*ckin netflix for the win.
Netflix is the worst of all streaming services.
I noticed this about this episode of BM, too.
I thought Streamberry was BM's version of Netflix, but Netflix is directly mentioned in Loch Henry along with Streamberry.
Havent watch netflix in weeks. Hopped in to watch the latest season of Black Mirror, and it told me to hop back out 😂
Not a problem!
This is too meta for my brain
This episode was awful
the take talking about things that the take are also guilty of.
Right?? Royals content, anyone?
From now on, whenever I hear the words “self deprecating”, I’ll be thinking of Joan Is Awful
Hard to know this episode is a comedy or a drama or a horror. :))))))))))) But it somehow really calm me down and make me feel good :))))))))))))
It's a comedy :)
I actually didn't really like this episode. Idk, maybe it's just me.
Why didn't Joan just get rid of her phone since that's how stream berry was tracking her. She should have switched to a non smart flip phone.
You guys forget the Black Mirror team =/= Netflix. Netflix just distributes Black Mirror they don't have a say in what the creators make commentary on.
Anyone noticed how almost every security guard was male and a ton of protagonists in certain scenes were female? It actually started to look... very odd.
Best example for 'we don't even care If you critic us, we'll still getting money out of your Show and this is why we are standing above you' ironically, this season ist a huge 'fuck you netflix', but it won't have an Impact on anything
i'd streamberry and chill with salma hayek
They used a fake axe (it looks so light while handling, like it was made out of styrofoam). Why can't they use real axes in films?
Im completely convinced that this writers streak is going to end with AI scabbing the wound. No need to call in the national guard anymore at least!
- this episode had too many plot holes- why didn’t she just turn her phone off?
Or toss it on a river
I think they'd watch her some way it's like big brother
I didn’t get it because I didn’t know the actress Annie Murphy was.
Read your Netflix terms and conditions guys
Have they named a strand of weed ‘Black Mirror’ yet?
Im not checkin
🚶🏾♂️
We know we suck, but still it drives engagement. - Netflix -
Ah so that explain African Queens among others.
Kinda weak to say that Netflix allowed this episode to air because they don’t think the consumer can change. Companies follow the money. It’s not corporations driving these decisions. It’s literally you.
Black mirror new season is really bad they fell off wtf is going on i did not enjoy any of the few i have seen its so garbage i swear
South Park did a Terms & Conditions episode already. Be careful what you agree to.
But 2023 Netflix charging to share is more black mirror than this episode is.
The acting in this episode was some of the worst I've ever seen. It's almost like they thought casting Salma Hayek was enough to sell it and moved on to the next.
are ppl really mad at this not being realistic? it's a dramatization n very clearly doesn't even take itself that seriously in the first place lmao
Wdym it's not realistic? Literally the reason why the strikes are happening rn 😂
This was atrocious, preechy and self congratulatory at the same time. It wasnt even clever.
"Well then bring on the Villain Era of the story", said most people, probably.
just answering the title question: No, black mirror admits we as people suck, because we are more likely to watch others mishaps and worst moments than something actually good.
