So excited to see this used. Fortunately for me I have a couple of acrylic holders just the right size and I am going to order the super slicer. I have arthritus in both hands and I have trouble slicing my Makuma Gane.and I love Makume Gane. I was afraid I was not going to be able to make any more. Now I know I can! Thanks, Cindy and thanks to the other commenters for giving me the idea to make my own.
I took a class on Mokume Gane and the instructor (Kim Hale, Sarasota FL) had one of these to use in the class. It was so easy that I had to come home and order one for myself. I can't wait until it gets here!
You are so correct Cindy! Polymer Clay is such a wonderful medium that I seem to become mesmerized by your instructional videos, one is only limited by your imagination. I first witnessed the use of polymer clay by a scroll saw artist, Steve good, where he was making an inlay in a key chain. Then I watched a wood turner make a beautiful feature ring on a small vessel. The more videos I watch the more my mind imagines all the possibilities. So thanks again, you have a great channel and I do enjoy all the info you afford to an artist like myself. Thanks, August
So glad you did this for all of us. I have been thinking about buying one and now that I have seen you use it I know what my next tool will for my studio. Can't wait to try it myself. Thanks Cindy you always have your students best interest in mind.
Thanks Cindi, as being a newbie to Polymer clay but doing a lot in woodworking as in Turning and carving. I think I shall at first make my own tool as I progress in the world of Polymer Clay. I find it so very inviting and your channel has opened up my ideas of where and how I can incorporate this product into my woodworking. So thanks for all the u-tube videos and I shall see where this journey takes me!!Thanks again, August
Thank you for your kind comments August! Yes I think polymer clay is wonderfully incorporated with whatever medium you can think of. There are people who do polymer clay inlays in wood, bake blocks of clay and turn them on their lathes and crave the clay with wood carving tools... so whatever your woodworking skills you want to bring to the art of polymer clay... definitely do that. If you need more claying info, make sure to check out our blog and tutorials at www.polymerclaytutor.com Have fun with it!
Hi, Claire here from Felt Finesse in the UK. Just seen this video and my immediate thought was that when you take out cards to lower the plate, you should remove the plate so that the lower buffer clay releases from the wall ...... otherwise, the the clay that is stuck to the wall will slightly higher on one end ( making the slice un-even) xxx Hope that makes sense x
I constructed something very similar myself some years ago that I've been using for polycaprolactone (plastic) cutting and polymer clay slicing. This looks like it would work well too. I wonder if the cardstock is coated so if something is accidentally spilled on it, will it survive? I actually use acrylic sheets as spacers on my cutter similar to what is used to make 'sandwiches' on many embossers. At $51.31 this seems like a high price, but keep in mind when businesses are just starting out and placing manufacturing orders that are considered small, things are costly. I'd bet that the $51.31 price is not too much over the actual manufacturing cost for the unit. If I didn't already have something of my own, I would be hopping on this tool because of it's functionality possibilities!
Oh I wish I had bought when it was available. Oh well. Are there any others that are in that price range. I don’t feel I’m good enough yet to spend to much. I love tutorials. I learn so much. Thank you for being there to share Silvanna
What a neat idea Lee Ann had ! Yes, I'd love to have one of these - I can see how much it would help me with my current project Thank you for putting together this demo
absolutely NO!! Good idea but I think it would cause a lot of frustration to me in the long run. Thanks for the demo. New to Polymer Clay and trying to learn as much as possible. Thanks August
Yes I would, it seems grate. Unfortunately, the thing is that it comes from the States and since my budget is limited I cannot afford to pay duty fees or the rate of exchange. Thank you for sharing the new gadgets though, it's nice to see what is out there!
Try using a water based clay (such as play dough) between the polymer clay you use as a bumper. it peels off much easier and you can rinse away the playdough if you need to.
Dee, Yes - that's exactly how I got to the SimpleSlicer. I started with less expensive variations. Just like the Goldilocks fairy tale: some were too big, to little, didn't allow as many choices when slicing, and the less expensive ones just didn't last. The expense is in the acrylic sides. But, they withstand the pressures and sharpness of the peelers. The SimpleSlicer will last a long time so it's a choice between buying one that lasts or four cheap ones.
I love your videos and hope someday to subscribe to your site, since I'm too sick to work I have my husband to take care of things, so these free videos you put out are a huge help to people like me who have to be supported by someone else. I am new to polymer clay and love the way you do your videos, they are the best I've seen on the net.
Hi Rachael Aryn, I haven't personally had any issues with fibers coming off my baby wipes onto the blade, but I don't technically use baby wipes but actually some kitchen wipes I got from Costco. Maybe you could try an different brand of wipes and see if that makes a difference?
Looks like a great tool, and I'd definitely be interested, although the price of the product as well as postage, ordering from the US, as an Australian resident, is pretty off-putting for my budget. I'm interested to know why you were making your buffer a triangle shape.
Hi amaranthinewednesday, not every tool will fit every ones budget, especially if you are from a far away country from where the tool is produced, but it may give you some of your own ideas on something else that may work for you. As far as the reason for the triangle bumper, it is to make the blade start into the clay a lot easier, therefore creating less distortion to the cane. Hope that makes sense!
Hi Cindy, I love the idea of having a gadget to slice my canes. However, this product seems a little to expensive and time consuming just to slice canes, but that's just my opinion. The product runs from $65 to $80 dollars on Etsy depending on the slicer you buy. We have so many brilliant clay artist these days (including the lady that made this slicer) I'm sure someone can come up with a better and less expensive way to slice canes. Here's a challenge for your subscribers, make a better wheel.
Hi Dragica Milojevic ex Savkovic and others who suggested using cornstarch between the scrap bumpers and the cane/slab, I did try that but found it buckled and separated when pulling the blade through. Using Translucent clay for my bumpers Like Christine H. mentioned on my Blog, would have been a better idea, since the Trans clay would not have left any discernible clay bits, should it get stuck to the cane.
That is so cool Melodie Fairburn! That is great that you love your new Simple Slicer. As far as getting replacement blades, my guess is that you would need to buy a new slicer (peeler) when it got dull, but maybe you should ask Lee Ann that?
In terms of the baby wipe on the blade, do you have trouble with 'hairs' coming off and sticking to the blade from the wipe? I get so many fibers and its hard to get them all off without cutting myself. And if I miss some they bind the clay together and make it difficult to get clean work...
Hi Angelica Rockwell, I tried water and I tried cornstarch for a release agent between the cane and the bumper, but I found it buckled and separated and made slicing more difficult. I should have used translucent clay for my bumper I guess. Then if they do become stuck together, you won't see it. Thanks for commenting!
I went to the Etsy website to investigate the Simple Slicer, but apparently the shop closed. Is there another shop that picked up the slicer and peeler?
How exciting...I watched this video as soon as it came out and had to have a Simple Slicer, ordered it immediately and received it yesterday. Works really good. Cindy do you know if they sell replacement blades for the slicer once they get dull?
What about using a piece of that clingy kitchen wrap between the bumper and canes or slabs?. The size wouldn't matter too much for the back, but the front one needs to be cut just short of the thickness of the slice. Nothing sticks, and it kind of protects the delicate little slice.
Hi Frauke Girus-Nowoczyn I did try using water but the pieces would separate when trying to pull the blade through and would buckle, making slicing more difficult instead of less. Thanks for the suggestion though! :)
@@karenbitter8857 The easiest and my favorite slicer is the Lucy Clay Slicer. But at around a hundred dollars, it isn't something that you would buy right away. Get really good at using a clay blade and once you are creating a lot of polymer clay work, then definitely invest in the Lucy Clay Slicer (the big one which is my fav or the mini one which is also good.) Check out my reviews on those products for more info.
This seems like a good tool but alas too expensive for my budget. I'll have to see if I can make my own. I am a subscriber and love your videos, keep up the good work!
There is another one out there for about 45 -50 dollars. I will try to find the site and list it but I think it looks even harder to use and have seen some negative comments on it.
Melodie, I'm sorry but the peeler doesn't have replacement blades. I've been using my for 4 years and it still is shape - and can still cut my fingers. :)
Hmm... interesting tool.. but I have to think there is a better way to do this? Seems like a good "hack" tool.. but something perhaps with firmer "cards" and an item to hold the clay in place? Off to think!
Hi, I see that the simple slicer is no longer being produced. My husband can make me a similar design. Can you tell me the dimensions of the simple slicer so he can make me one? Thank you.
Hi geaux greene, yes I have a tutorial on making that Faux Wood that you saw in the video. Just go to my blog (link in description) and type 'faux wood' into the search box to find out how you can purchase it. Glad to see you liked it. It is a very versatile technique to have in your polymer clay 'bag of tricks'!
According to Etsy this is discontinued due to owner retiring. But the price on it was wait for it £735! What it’s a glorified cheese slicer. I am sure that there are other items out there that do the same thing?
LOL That price is just a marker so that it could be listed with no sales! 😜 I once saw something on Etsy for a Million dollars for the same reason. If I remember correctly the original price was around $50 or $60 not $1000 US or the £735 that you saw there. 🙂
Hi sabrina piunti, I store my unbaked polymer canes in the same drawers I store my raw polymer clay. I did a UA-cam video already on How to Store Polymer Clay where I show you the drawers I use, that you may want to check out. pretty clever, i wonder if Santa would give me one for the coming Christmas :P
maybe putting a little baby powder on the sides of the clay that touches the "bumpers" would help it not stick to the cane?
