To those of you telling him to watch the tempo: it's called rubato. Here's the dictionary definition. Rubato - An important characteristic of the Romantic period. It is a style where the strict tempo is temporarily abandoned for a more emotional tone. So in other words, he's playing this with a much more emotional and passionate sound by "robbing" time from certain sections and "adding" it to others so some parts are faster or slower than others. I think this is beautiful just the way it is.
Jeez, you won't believe how much this helps me. I've known this song for a while, but I know the notes...listening to the changing tempos and the WAY you play the notes helps so much, now I'll be able to play it better, hopefully. Great job.
who knew a song like this can actually get to you.. this is a very magnificent song.. to tell you the truth i never really liked classical music, but thanks to people like this.. i am hooked
This video was very helpful to me. I'm trying to learn this piece now and seeing your hands from the top really helps. Your playing is beautiful too. You really do know the melody and understand the feeling behind this prelude. Well done.
Not too fast, not too slow, and I nice touch of rubato in most of the right places. I like the hesitation at 1:18...just enough to make you stop and think. Just lovely. The turn was executed with particular care. Just a nice rendition.
thank you so much. I only play be ear, though I can 'read' sheet music to determine what the chords are. your video confirms for me that this piece can in fact be played/mastered by someone such as I... a novice... since you have allowed me to see it done. And I love this piece. So much of Chopin's work 'sounds' simple; then, one looks at the sheet music... and weeps. thanks again.
Excellent rendition-I'll have to thank you, actually. It was due at least in part to this video that I learned how to play this piece, and it is now one of my favorite pieces to play, and one of my best. So, thank you.
Wonderful! I really doubted I'd find anything on this piece. After learning Moonlight Sonata, this was the next one I really wanted to play. Great work!
It wasn't too fast. I just started working on this piece and your interpretation really helped me get a better feeling of how it flows - especially towards the end. Thank you for sharing this :)
thank you so much im just learning how to play this almost got it but didnt know where to put emphasis and the last 3 chords werent working for me its written differently on the music i have but it sounds wrong so now i can play it right thank you! i kept meaning to watch your hands to see what you were playing but my eyes kept glazing over its so beautiful.
This is one of my favorite pieces. I started learning this on piano just recently and I've been watching a bunch of videos like this one to help me. This was absolutely amazing! Also people have mentioned Fifty Shades of Grey with this song? I've never heard anything about this being associated with Fifty Shades of Grey.. I first heard this song in The Notebook which is my favorite movie.
Aw, that was so nice. I can't play any instrument. I have tried keyboard, but just haven't got it. I have always liked this, and to watch you play was magical. thank you. x
Actually this prelude is pretty simple but not easy at all to learn I learned it last year but there are some move pretty tough you really need to be focus on the melody and you have to know the music ! You can't play it just like that ! This is my favorite prelude with the 6 ! Thanks Chopin!
fantastic. im just starting to learn the piano and this seems a long way off! what a great piece of music imbued with heart and feeling.to me it speaks of someone suffering a great loss..death of a loved one or child.
i thought hand position was beautiful i loved the overview camera shot it was also nice to see you rest your hands until the notes completely faded awesome job!
there are some variations. Ive found a few on chopin pieces recently. for example a substantial melodic and harmonic difference can be found in the B section of Nocturne 20 in C sharp minor in the 2 different versions ive played.
haha, well i'm pretty sure that half of the ppl who watch the Choplin videos wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Notebook. Frankly, I'm glad that movie at least showed some classic touch to it =) glad people are taking that extra step and researching the original song!
I'm here because of Five Easy Pieces, by the most underrated Bob Rafelson and thankfully no other film. This Chopin piece really does not depend on technique, but inner feeling, like 5 easy pieces says..
By the way I've been playing piano since I was three literally and played this piece in fourth grade. So I know what I'm talking about and this is a beautiful rendition. Well done.
Clyfton, I am a new student of about my 24th hour of class in 8 months. I really want to play this song so I decided to just try it on my own an surprise my teacher. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. For the novice like me you are a blessing. I am so inspired and listen to this repeatedly. Any advise for me as I strive to become get better. I am learning on a Yamaha Digital P-95 that I saved up and bought because for the first 4 months I practiced on a toy with only 36 keys.
The thing is, though, that I don't want to think in terms of right/wrong when dealing with something as interpretive as music. It all comes down to taste and preference.
Why do so many people make a big deal of how a person plays a piece. Unless specified, play it the way that suits you! For example, I have small hands but I'm a very musical person! So I have to find tricks to reach those notes :P It's great! Love it . I want to play it now :c)
The sheet music I have says that the last chord is just a simple E minor. LH: EE and RH: EGBE. So, the last chord that was played is absolutely correct.
I really like the way you play it. I think this piece its not hard to read it and fingers are not difficult but it's very hard to play it with sensibility and emotion, to achieve that deep sound...congrats
I agree completely. More temperament is what's needed. However, my camcorder has a built-in audio compressor, so it sortof "caps" everything i play, making some things louder and others softer...
waah I got to play this piece for a winter rectial... It is definitely not my level since it is not hard to learn, but it is hard to get that emotion... T_T Gaah... Good job!! I liked it very much!
There is a huge difference in playing this piece, and in "playing" it. Just typing the notes is not the same as playing it as a whole. I'v played the piano for almost 6 years, and I find this piece hard to play. I doubt that anyone who has not either played or studied music before would be able to even comprehend this piece to it's full extent. Until you understand this you while not be able to play an instrument more than a child could can talk about politics To Clyfton: Beautifully played
i signed in today for the sole purpose of telling you that you cheated. i decided to watch this video to help me learn it and the part i'm having trouble with and needed to see you didn't even attempt. thanks.
Hi, nice playing I might be wrong though, but at 2:09 I believe you play the incorrect note with your second finger, right hand. You play a G whereas it should be F#.
@l1is1the1coolest Actually in all the written versions that I have of this, it is a G, not an F#. The notation might slightly change depending on what the copy your playing from. (My RCM book version is a bit different from an other old book I have)
i was referring to one of his other videos. My left hand speed isnt up to par with my right so it gets fatigued easier. I play piano for fun, no lessons, i cant even read music...never learned...so i just go off of what i hear >.>
no, but if you look at the sheet music its difficult to read because of all the sharps and flats and the hand positions are awkward. and theres an easy version and a harder version.

I enjoyed the way you played this. The mood of mourning, telling the story in the melody. and the final chord underlining the sense of loss
C'est vraiment super bien joué et je suis très fan de ce morceau !! Merci pour ce moment !
Jeez, you won't believe how much this helps me. I've known this song for a while, but I know the notes...listening to the changing tempos and the WAY you play the notes helps so much, now I'll be able to play it better, hopefully. Great job.
Sublime interprétation. C'est une de mes compositions préférées de Chopin !
Merci pour cet excellent partage.
Very very well done. One of my favorite pieces. I'm not kidding or exaggerating when I say you playing this brought a tear to my eye.
who knew a song like this can actually get to you.. this is a very magnificent song.. to tell you the truth i never really liked classical music, but thanks to people like this.. i am hooked
The first composition i ever played at a recital. That was 1983. Many recital and yrs later it still sounds the same."Beautiful"
This video was very helpful to me. I'm trying to learn this piece now and seeing your hands from the top really helps. Your playing is beautiful too. You really do know the melody and understand the feeling behind this prelude. Well done.

It reminds me of a great movie Five Easy Pieces. J Nicholson played a character mostly expressed in this minor but a beautiful melody.
thank you so much. I only play be ear, though I can 'read' sheet music to determine what the chords are. your video confirms for me that this piece can in fact be played/mastered by someone such as I... a novice... since you have allowed me to see it done. Phenominal, much feeling in your playing, my mom used to play this all the time!
I plan to play this in my spring recital
One of my favorites.
One of my favorite classical pieces
Wonderful! I really doubted I'd find anything on this piece. After learning Moonlight Sonata, this was the next one I really wanted to play.
Great work!
I thought this sounded wonderful. I love this piece and this rendition was lovely to listen, too. Thanks for sharing.
Very well done.
loved it, one of my favorites by Chopin.
It wasn't too fast. I just started working on this piece and your interpretation really helped me get a better feeling of how it flows - especially towards the end. Thank you for sharing this :)
Beautiful

this song is very beutiful and there was no words to explain it but the closest is wow!
That was so nice, very beautiful and heartfelt! Thank you
i love it
it sounds just like the version out of the notebook
beautifully done.
C'est un morceau magnifique! Bravo, tu le joues très bien.
Even the light fits perfectly with this piece.
I'm on love with your handwork!
This is one of my favorite pieces. I started learning this on piano just recently and I've been watching a bunch of videos like this one to help me. This was absolutely amazing! thumbs up for you!
@xmsakicx: The time signature is "cut common time" which is 2/2.
Aw, that was so nice. I can't play any instrument. I have tried keyboard, but just haven't got it. I have always liked this, and to watch you play was magical. thank you. x

You have perfect piano hands :)
this piece is so beautiful, as is the other chopin piece you did
Beautifully played, I'm going to have to learn this one.
fantastic. im just starting to learn the piano and this seems a long way off! what a great piece of music imbued with heart and feeling.to me it speaks of someone suffering a great loss..death of a loved one or child.
Bravooooooo nice song,

I´ll try to play it like you...
This is may favourite Chopin's prelude. GREAT!
You have a beatiful piano. It's as beatiful as your playing.

Best Regards,
George
Great job! I just started playing this peice today, its easier than I thought it would be.
i thought hand position was beautiful
i loved the overview camera shot
it was also nice to see you rest your hands until the notes completely faded
awesome job!
So nice. Great to hear someone "really" play this.
The Pianist must have hit home with you!
Excellent playing, by the way.
there are some variations. Ive found a few on chopin pieces recently. for example a substantial melodic and harmonic difference can be found in the B section of Nocturne 20 in C sharp minor in the 2 different versions ive played.
This song is especially difficult to keep from being a dirge. I have always heard passion and hope in it and you executed that beautifully!
Such a simple melody full with emotions.
You did a good job. I have to play this song for my keyboard class and this helped. Thanks.
this tune in beautiful makes me hav alot of emotions lol :$ very well played xx
haha, well i'm pretty sure that half of the ppl who watch the Choplin videos wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Notebook. Frankly, I'm glad that movie at least showed some classic touch to it =) glad people are taking that extra step and researching the original song!
your video helped me when I was learning this masterpiece, thank you very much:)
this song gives me chills every tiimee!

God bless your ears!!!! dude you are really talented
ohhhh I use to love what you're playing. Definite and we see your hands. Perfect to learn the piece =D
So beautiful. Thankyou for sharing this with us.
You're amazing. I love your playing.
I don't like chopin but this piece is very beautiful.
Magnífico tempo. Felicidades!
This is absolutely incredible...
Very nice interpretation, especially after bar 15. Thanks.
nice work man!
and good from you to place the camera that way!
The thing is, though, that I don't want to think in terms of right/wrong when dealing with something as interpretive as music. It all comes down to taste and preference.
Beautiful thanks for sharing I love Chopin so much. :)
Very true. Some of the original manuscripts I have viewed don't use the slurrs and phrasing we see today in the EE editions of the music.
Why do so many people make a big deal of how a person plays a piece. Unless specified, play it the way that suits you! For example, I have small hands but I'm a very musical person! So I have to find tricks to reach those notes :P

50 shades of beautiful!
simply beautiful .................

trust me its harder than it sounds. i like the speed its the artists recreation
I thought I was playing it wrong but that sound identical to my version! =D
Yay Good work!
Love to play this piece!
BRAAAAVO!!! I love that piece!!
Regarding the 3rd to last chord (2:10), that G is supposed to be an F#.
OMG this is the song Ive been looking for! It should be called "Piece to slit your wrists too". lol Very depressing but very expressive and beautiful.
Beautiful piece hooray!!!!
Hi, nice playing
I might be wrong though, but at 2:09 I believe you play the incorrect note with your second finger, right hand. You play a G whereas it should be F#.
@l1is1the1coolest
Actually in all the written versions that I have of this, it is a G, not an F#. The notation might slightly change depending on what the copy your playing from. (My RCM book version is a bit different from an other old book I have)
you played it really well, with emotions :)
i was referring to one of his other videos. My left hand speed isnt up to par with my right so it gets fatigued easier. I play piano for fun, no lessons, i cant even read music...never learned...so i just go off of what i hear >.>
very nice and relaxing, good execution
no, but if you look at the sheet music its difficult to read because of all the sharps and flats and the hand positions are awkward. and theres an easy version and a harder version.
Wow everyone is talking about Fifty Shades of Grey and I'm here because of The Notebook....
Great playing--and we love the hole in your jeans!
Это просто фантастически! Почти не отличишь от оригинала...
i love this part....good job....
I suggest you make your own recording, played the way you see fit. I'm looking forward to listening to it!
very nice, very interesting version, though I can't exactly say why. Thanks and congrats!
cette chanson t'arrache le coeur ='(
I like your phrasing! :)
~oh edward` you make me cry "
Master of the Universe"
