  • How is Ramadan like in Singapore? Today, my Muslim viewer Fazli guided me through the holy month of Ramadan and challenged me to fast for a day. Well, I thought it will be easy because I do intermittent fasting where I do not consume anything with calories for 16 hours. But what's different about Ramadan fasting is that I cannot even drink any kind of fluid as well.
Join me as I fast for Ramadan and learn a bunch about the Muslim community in Singapore. Selamat Hari Raya!
Big thanks to Fazli! / faz_tezt

actually, the significance of Ramadan month is due to the fact, the first verse in the Koran was revealed to the prophet Muhamad in the month of Ramadan. The muslim are required to fast, to be grateful for the guidance God has given to human kind. There is a verse about this in the Koran.

Muslims are completely ok with fasting because we're used to it, but if it's your first time fasting, you definitely need some time to adjust. Like Fazli said, fasting is like a time to reset and rest your body. Try not to talk or do too much activity the first time you do it. Eating a few pieces of date beforehand (during suhoor) can fuel you for quite a long time, and you can practice this with any kind of fasting. I haven't tried date milk though. Also try to do something to distract yourself whenever you feel hungry or thirsty :)

    • @FazliRahmat

Yes! I agree. You should give date milk a try 😅

Muslims can fast almost anytime of the year from dawn to sunset to realign spiritually and remember the less fortunate. But fasting during Ramadan is compulsory unless otherwise for permissible reasons.
The reason for avoiding KFC for pre-dawn meal is simply because oily food makes your body work harder to burn the oil. That's one benefits of fasting for one month, to regenerate your organs back to its natural state.
You can certainly have more than just milk (i.e. bread, oats, porridge or bowl of soup noodles is fine too). Most importantly is hydrate your body in the morning. But if you have no time to prepare food, dates are really helpful.
These are based on my limited knowledge about Islamic fasting.

Diving into fasting like this with just a tiny packet of date milk is actually pretty hazardous. Dehydration and low blood sugar is no joke, especially if you're planning to carrying out a normal day. Loss of focus can make boring everyday tasks like driving and operating work machinery dangerous.

Hi Ghib, gonna feed you a little additional new info that many non-muslims might not know. Actually most muslims generally look forward to Ramadhan. Its not like we see the month as a something burdening. In fact its almost obligatory to look forward to this month for muslims becos its the month where the holy book of Quran was sent down and its a chance for muslims to repent if they sinned and do more good deeds becos rewards received are multiple fold than as compared to other months outside Ramadhan.
The only reason why some muslims MIGHT feel dread is becos of lack of mental and spiritual preparation. Before Ramadhan, theres two more months in muslim calendar called Rejab and Syaaban. these two are also considered sacred months in islam and so-called a pre-requisite months to prepare for Ramadhan. These two months is where devote muslims will start occassional voluntary fasting. Its like a gradual transition in the three months from no fasting to occassional fasting to full 30 days fasting. It makes sense isnt it? And by the time Ramadhan comes, our body should already start to regulate and get used to the fasting. But of course, the normal ways would be generally we just do Ramadhan. :) But to not be shock with drastic change some muslims prepare two months prior. Hope it helps!

It’s not a must. It depends on the individual. Ramadhan is a month that u devote to god and abstain from satisfying any desires. And this includes eating till you’re full. Its up to u at which level or which extent you’re able to commit

    • @muhdzulhilmi3115

if im not wrong, according to our prophet, it was sufficient for him to just eat dates with a glass of milk so it's fine for us to do the same (even encouraged) but as you know lifestyles and cultures are different all around the world and so most of us would eat a little more

It's nice that you embrace and experience other people's culture!!
And I cringe when you just lie down on your bed after going out, not bathing immediately haha!!

Ghib-San, are you still in touch with your old Bangladeshi friend? I’m sure he’s a Muslim and he’ll be able to give you an insight into fasting for someone working in a menial task.

I think Ghib mentioned somewhere that his friend has gone back to Bangladesh

Hey Ghib, that must have been an interesting experience.
Where was the bazaar you went to with Fazli though?

Eh, you should eat more in the morning, not just date milk (never heard of anyone consuming this for sahur) 😂 Yes, it is tradition to eat dates but that's not the only thing we eat lol. I usually eat brown rice with clear soup, some protein and vegetables. It's nutritious and helps give you energy throughout the day till dusk 😊 でもこれはGhibさんの初めての断食だったね。Ghibさん頑張ったな。おめでとうございます!(^_^)
