My ‘79 F-350 4WD Ranger Lariat SuperCab is still going strong. Ordered with PS, PB, A/C, CB radio, cruise control, dual fuel tanks and 351M. I’ve installed a Detroit locker in the rear, an ARB air locker in the front, 4.56:1 gears, dual Rancho front shocks with mounts I fabricated myself, and high-steer tie rod and drag link. 35” Super Swamper radials with forged aluminum Weld Wheels. Also installed Edelbrock manifold, carburetor, camshaft, new valve springs, and 4” K&N air filter. Heads have been ground to match the intake ports, valves were ground with triple angles, and the surfaces were milled flat to remove distortion and slightly increase compression. Full MSD ignition was installed: Pro-Billet distributor, Off-Road box, 8mm wires, Blaster coil, and wiring harness with weatherproof connectors. Dual 2 1/2” exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. Pipes and mufflers all mounted above the frame rails for clearance. Pipes exit straight back and downward before the rear bumper. Also has dual marine batteries with solenoid control. Interior has new carpeting and a new seat. No rust, no rot. Mileage about 7-10 mpg and it sure isn’t fast with those gears. Engine turns about 3,400 at 65 mph. Between the tires and the exhaust, gotta really yell to talk to passenger! Pulls in 4-Low like an old John Deere, but 0-60 is embarrassingly slow! Like any personally-built projects, it’s got a few things that aren’t quite complete. Prestone 1 gal bottle for radiator overflow, transmission, engine oil, and rear diff oil gauges are still on the floor, still haven’t put the radio back in, and there’s no heat! (If you know where the heater core is on a truck with A/C, you’ll know why.)

Ya, that made me laugh. I currently drive a '79 F-100 with a 302 and on a recent 2000 mile round trip from Atlanta to San Antonio I managed only 13 mpg. That's with a brand new C4 trans and a new rear end, and similarly young 302. I've owned a '77 and another '79, both with 302s and the best I ever got with any of them was 15mpg.
Back then they put the cars on a tread mill with no load or anything and ran the vehicle at an optimal speed for that particular setup like 50 mph or some crap. All those numbers up until recently are only good for comparison, not for reality.

I have a 79 model F-150 myself, with the Twin I Beam, and I will say, these trucks can take pretty rough treatment. I've jumped mine several times, gone through ditches. Sure, these only have a few inches of suspension travel, but these frames are springy. You bottom out, the axles flex, the frames bend, but they bounce right back out. Driving through a field, you can watch the bed rocking back and forth, or hitting big piles of dirt or tree stumps, the axle comes up and hits the frame, the truck twists. The whole truck is a spring. No rigidity, but no permanent deformation.

My late father bought a red ‘77 model year F250 4x4 crewcab with a 351W in 1976. My uncle who has long since passed also bought a yellow ‘76 F250 crewcab with a 360 in 1976, that crewcab is still in their family 47 years later albeit with a Cummins in it since 2002.

I recall watching a video that proved they make the same cars for Brazil, except ours in the USA will trigger a warning light if there's too much ethanol, there's won't. Even though both can handle ethanol above 90%, let alone 85%. That's why they sell chips here that plug into your OBD2 so you can use e85 without triggering the warning. Most fuel systems in the last 20-25 years are perfectly fine with Ethanol in any amount in vehicles made by commercial car manufacturers. However, oil companies wouldn't like it if they didn't throw a warning when you use too little of their product versus the competitor.

Dad bought a used 73 F-100 Custom in 77: great truck.
My first vehicle 6 months after turning 16 in 1989, was a 1970 F-250: truck was a beast.

Rotating chairs in the van? That sounds really dangerous. I could just see myself going around a curve and my chair spinning away from the controls.

Built so good they'll last up to 80,000 miles without replacing both your motor and transmission. Anyone that thinks they built better trucks back then than now, look at the average lifespan of major components of the truck, or average lifespan of a vehicle before it's in the junk yard back then versus now.

lamewarrior ...In high school I had a 77 F1 with a 300 inline 6 with 200,000 miles on it. My buddy had a 73 Chevy with a big block and less miles. ( Nice truck though.) I imbarased him one day when we both got our beds fully loaded with gravel and had to go up a seriously steep and long gravel road to get out of the quarry. I drove up it fairly easy but you could tell she was working hard. At the top I waited a while then decided to check on him. His poor truck was halfway up reved up so high and barely moving. I ask if he wants me to hook a tow chain to the front and he yells at me "NO I GOT THIS." So after driving back down to turn around I get tired of watching him destroy his truck. I hook the log chain to my rear and run up in front of him put it in park set park brake run back 10 feet to latch on to his conveniently located front frame hooks, jump back in the Ford and help him out. I look back wondering if the steam I'm seeing is from his truck overheating or him. As soon as we get to his driveway to unload the gravel his poor truck starts whistling and he starts with the excuses. It was then with our backs to it the top radiator hose let loose and scared the crap out of us both. That Ford 300 may not have been fast but it was durable and extremely torquey. I did rib him by saying "Now I know why you added the tow hooks to the front of your truck, good thinking. 😁 When I finally sold the Ford it had 257,002 miles on it. Still running decent but the twin I beam suspension and steering box wore out so bad I could turn the steering wheel half turn before it moved the wheels. I miss that old Ford.
