Giant Arachnid on Adventure - Megaphobema mesomelas

- Searching for tarantulas in the wild can sometimes be very easy - or very challenging. This time I'd say it was more in the easier side finding an adult Megaphobema mesomelas, now in the new genus Abdomegaphobema, the Costa Rican Red Leg Velvet Tarantula in a huge burrow right next to a street, nothing for folks with arachnophobia. This species of tarantula, M. mesomelas, inhabits the cloud forests in the central highland of Costa Rica between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level. Amazing arachnid! Temperature and moisture wise, this tarantula species is on the cold & wet side and needs to be kept in appropriate conditions in case you are keeping this tarantula species as a pet tarantula - but more on that in the video, enjoy our adventure!

Wow! Absolutely beautiful, I jumped as about as far as you did when Madame sprung out to greet us! Good job mate!
what a find that megaphobema was something else 👏👏👏👏
Wow, I can only imagine how much more impressive the velvet black is in person. Beautiful shots! And very good information about why they are not good species to keep as a hobby.
absolutely stunning
Also, I never much cared for this Sp because every pic I've seen make them look leggy w an undersized Carapace; unlike this one.
I wishh u had a mil subcribers!!!, This channel clearly deserves more I can feel the love for the arachnids all the way from the philippines, this channel is one of the reasons why I got into the hobby
thank you so much! help me spread the word in the Philippines so that the channel get's watched more in your country! :) Can't wait visiting the Philippines
Best channel for Tarantulas spiders

My aunt lives on a ranch in Costa Rica and lots of rain is just something you get used to when you’re that close to the equator.
Awesome reaction time, definitely an awesome way to get your adrenaline pumping. What a gorgeous tarantula. Thanks for sharing, stay safe out there.
haha cheers :)

Amazing man
thank you :)
Great video! Awesome looking country and tarantula
Costa Rica is outstanding!
@@birdspiders they have good coffee aswell. I am kind of a coffee lover! Costa rica is up there with Kenyan
I have a feeling that they export their best coffe.... the coffee I had in Costa Rica was not really good :( Maybe I was at the wrong places for coffe!
@@birdspiders maybe. I have heard that too. But they are known for great coffee
The Aphonopelma in the U.S. seem to have a lot of variations in their colouring and markings too. One that comes to mind is Aphonopelma eutylenum.
Awesome video of a fabulous tarantula.
thanks Vanessa!
Very beautiful specimen of Mv. Gracias, hombre :-)
hehe :)
Awesome video again! I've never seen that species before in the pet trade (I only buy from "responsible" breeders/sellers), but is easily now my favorite. Interesting as well, as I've begun working together how to make a vivarium that might reproduce these conditions for similar species. An autonomous dynamic lighting/ventilation/misting system. Keep up the good work, your work has inspired mine quite a bit.
thank you so much Michael! Looking forward to see your results
@Blood Eagle 88 Biopod's are beautiful looking pieces of tech, but are designed for the consumer, not the hobbyist. I'm looking more towards creating options and ideas that can easily be replicated and improved by the community with simple off the shelf parts.
WOW! What a gorgeous animal! Cool that she played a long and came out for a photoshoot since in CR you can't physically disturb them.
very gorgeous species indeed
Soo beautiful and giant spider, and habbitat is realy hard to copy at home...good advice mate 👍
good luck in doing an enclosure in that way :) would be awesome!
too lazy for english xD
klasse video und ja es sind wirklich super schöne kräftige farben. danke für die extra erklärung bzgl der terrarienhaltung und auch dir martin vielen dank für deine mühe :)
danke dir! Deutsch geht auch klar :))
Omgosh she is gorgeous!!! I think you're right though. You would probably need an elaborate setup to keep them. A chamber to mimic a pretty rainy and damp environment. Enough dirt where a spider her size could burrow and possibly tunnel for safety. But wow, she is amazing!!!! The other spider was beautiful to me to. Definitely special like you said. Tyfs God bless you and Happy Easter!!!
cheers Debbie! thanks for the comment
Wieder super Arbeit! Hoffe ihr schaut euch auch mal in Brasilien um.
waren wir schon öfters, nur halt ohne videokamera damals :)
Ive got a psalmopoeus irminia and a acanthoscuria geniculata, Venezuela sun tiger and the Brazilian giant white knee 🕷🇬🇧 juveniles stage in 7ltr enclosure
Beautiful beautiful work, awesome stuff once again, you are blessed, being able to go and see So much of God’s green earth.
thanks John
Is it Raining 🤣 🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤
Wow man I just fell in love with this species!
so awesome isn't it
birdspidersCH it’s beautiful man I’m so jealous of your travels I wish I could afford to do this! It would be a dream!!
I know not everyone can do it, but something I've learned is that it's way more affordable than most people think.... once you are in one of the tropical countries, accomodations and food is very inexpensive
birdspidersCH Maybe one of these days I’ll meet you out on one of these adventures I’d love to get out there with you and explore until then I’m glad you’re doing it so I get to live vicariously through you LOL
Amazing video footage as always. I've been in the Monteverde area and agree we don't need this spider in captivity. It's been proven to do poorly in captivity over and over again.
cheers Tom! It's not suitable for sure
Crazy to use that stick to lure them out. I would have a long extending metal rod. Awesome experience for sure.
metal would not be ideal since it could harm the fangs of the tarantula when they bite in it
@@birdspiders people tong feed ts all the time so its essentially the same thing.
the same I wouldnt recommend doing by the same reasons, correct :) Instead use material made out of plastic or wood
There are more than one species of ceratogyrus. Off the top of my head, I know of darlingi and marshalli.
of course there are more species of Ceratogyrus? the reference was used to talk about the African counterparts. There are also South american species with horns, such as Megaphobema teceae
I'm ok with not having this T in my collection. With this video you have giving me experience I would never had.
thanks Andrew! Means a lot to me
Pura Vida, you have to say, when a car comes by ;)
could not stand that "pura vida" from tourists all the time :D
Super Video, scheiß Wetter 😉
besser könnt ich's nicht sagen :D
Is the habitat a bit different for S. hoffmanni than it is for M. mesomelas? I know you don't personally recommend keeping mesomelas, so do you not recommend this highland hoffmanni either? How are the mesomelas burrows and hoffmanni burrows different? So interesting. I saw a lot of mesomelas slings for sale at an expo here on the West Coast of U.S. a couple weeks ago.
S. hoffmanni is also extremely difficult to breed. I honestly don't know about many successfull "completely in pet" breeding programs without already mated females dropping a sac in captivity. Luckily for S. hoffmanni they don't get poached that often and are not very much wanted in the pet hobby.
short version: S. hoffmanni is also difficult to keep at optimal conditions, but they also live at altitudes around 600 m.a.s. and therefore are better suited for keeping them as pets
Hi Martin, thank you very much for the video :) It is very nice to see such a spider in a natural setting :) I saw that in Poland this species is often bred and sold, and the price for this species is quite high.
So Polish sellers know how to make suitable conditions for the level of humidity for this species - so that it multiplies? )))
sadly it's not so easy - there are getting eggsacks/cocons poached and imported into europe, then the spiderlings get sold.
Feel free to send me any breeding reports of this species, would be great to read more about it :)
@@birdspiders Large breeders from Poland, do not make any reports, photos + price and nothing more.
I didn’t guess about cocoon smuggling :)
Martin remove the material from Suriname & Brazil, why the natural females E.Murinos have black carapace on the photo, and all spiders have beige hobbies
We are very interested in what these differences are, or is it polymorphism, or something else?
Here are observations by the way there are fresh photos.

I have a beautiful and healthy male... with the intent of getting a beautiful female now !... all my respects for you !!! great video !!!

What is the name of the 2nd species in the video?
the first and brown one is Sphaerobothria hoffmanni, the other is M. mesomelas
Just curious, do you have a day job? Or youre a scientist or something
yes, normal dayjob - this I do all in my freetime and vacation
Amazing mate
Filming makes me dizzy..interesting content but a few photography skills would greatly improve not to mention getting rid of that annoying generic music...just voice would be much better
thanks for your comment!
