  • We're taking a look at an 18 core Intel Xeon processor that's almost 10 years old. It used to be an absolute behemoth, but how does it hold up in 2023?
    We're testing three processor options: the E5-1620 V3, the E5-2670 V3 and the E5-2699 V3. We're testing the processors with Cinebench R23, 3DMark CPU Profile and 3DMark Timespy Extreme, Tomb Raider, Dirt Rally, Metro Last Light Redux and Cyberpunk 2077.

    The follow-up to this video can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/2H-rVbvsupk/v-deo.html
    It features more processors and less silly mistakes.
    Listed below are the mistakes found in this video. Please read this before commenting:
    1. The 13th gen i3s do have hyperthreading. I already know about this mistake.
    2. At 10:00, I was referring to single core turbo, but misspoke and said multicore turbo. Thanks to @pascalfust1035 for letting me know.
    3. Please stop correcting me on the price. I paid $100 AUD on eBay. If you got a better deal, that's great, but I am going to continue being honest about what I paid.

      Those cpus are great value. Other than the known security vulnerabilities, there is no other disadvantage I can think of. And anyway, those vulnerabilities are too complicated to use, you're not Google for someone to target you, you're an average gamer, so.. I too upgraded to an old gen i7.

    Take a look at the 2697A V4 if you get a chance. They're around $100 or so at least on E-Bay in the US. They turbo to 3.6. The V4/Broadwell architecture with single core performance gains that were markedly significant along with 30%-50% power draw improvement that I measured on my Dell R730 boxes. They are an EXTREME value today. Especially when you can get a used HP Z series workstation dual socket for ~200-300 and load it with up to 768GB of memory. Another note, the more memory channels you use I've noticed that the performance increases significantly with the V3 and V4 series.

      @@yazi2879 3.1 all core on the 2697A V4 through my own testing. I suggested it specifically because of core count and price because the 2687W V4 costs a lot more especially socketed into used workstations for whatever reason. The 2697A was used in a lot of blades. It was sought after for scale computing but not for most workstations er-go lower pricing on the used market. It's a less known but extremely potent SKU.

    When the pandemic hit and I went from working exclusively on a laptop to working at home I grabbed a dell T5810 fairly cheap (I think around $250) and threw in a E5-2678v3 for another $85 (you can get them a lot cheaper now). After newer stuff became available again I repurposed the dell as a Proxmox server. Considering that was 3 years or so ago now for $350 I got a ton of use out of it first as a workstation and then as a homelab server. Gaming wasn't very high on my list so I wasn't worried about the turbo unlock but the games I did play were fine on it. Currently in the process of rebuilding my homelab machines and am upgrading to more modern hardware but if budget is your biggest concern these CPU's still provide plenty of value though the higher spec 16xx's are probably the best for gaming.

I sold him an i7 7700k (my used system when I upgraded) a few years ago which works well, but now his teenage son is wanting his own computer that he can use to lay some tracks. He's asked me to come up with a good affordable system to get him as a gift for the upcoming holidays. I think this will be an excellent value for what he needs out of a system, and will leave a lot of funds for better peripherals. Hi, great summary of the architecture, plus your graphs look great! What were your CPU temps? I found the stock cooler on the Z440 to be more than sufficient, but I am using Kryonaut thermal paste on mine. I just rounded off my own upgrades on my Z440 system and I was amazed by the price drops on the hardware (my last shopping spree was in Feb. 2022 lol). At the moment, the e5-2697A V4, as others have said below, is a great value item, as is the e5-2687W V4. Just make sure that all the seller photos have the CPU model number printed on the IHS. I mildly panicked when my CPU arrived without the model number printed on the IHS, but it benched as expected, so likely authentic.

    • @racerrrz
      @racerrrz 7 місяців тому

      @@serverscience Those are solid temperatures! Over engineered CPU cooler, you can't expect less from HP.
      I can recommend obtaining the CPUs directly from Ebay USA. Also, the e5-2699 CPUs remain really expensive due to being the top of the range. I am based in NZ and it's the same here, local prices are unaffordable. But I just managed to get a e5-2697 V4 for my Z440 for $63 USD delivered (still expensive, but in April 2022 this CPU was $300 USD, I wanted a pair for my Z840 but it proved too expensive back then), as well as a pair of e5-2683 V4s for $38 USD delivered which I'll use in a Z840.

    • @racerrrz
      @racerrrz 7 місяців тому

      @@serverscience Great choice and epic find with that pricing! The e5-2697 V4 packs some serious punch and should suit your Z440 well. Are you video editing with your Z440? I wish the top of the line Broadwell CPUs would drop more in price but they seem to retain a steep margin (e5-2699 V4 is still ~$220 USD). I priced up the e5-2699 V4's at ~$500 USD in April 2022 when I upgraded my system and now they are much cheaper. My only complaint on these high core CPUs is the low base clock speed - in my experience it has really hammered gaming performance (but it's great for video editing etc.). At this stage I think I'll stick with the dated e5-2697 V3's and save up for the newer architecture (dual Xeon Platinum 8268's would be a dream, pipe dream literally lol).

      I can't really say which card would be best because I only have a 3070 in my own system (with the 2699 V3), but the bottleneck for me at 4K high/ultra is the graphics card. I suspect it would be roughly the same story for the 3080 as well, but it depends a lot on the games.
      I did another video with more of these processors and found very little difference between them (above 8 cores) with the RTX 3060, so the best processor for x99 is mostly which one is the cheapest (1680 V3, 1660 V4, 2699 V3 etc etc). On your motherboard, you should be more easily able to raise the power limit and unlock the turbo, so you'll probably want a V3 processor for that.
      Regarding the bottleneck of PCIe 3.0 (compared to 4.0), it's roughly a 2-3% reduction in performance, so it isn't significant.
      One major issue you might run into is bad 1% and 0.1% framerates in certain games, with the worst results being in certain ray traced titles.

    Lenovo p700 . Auction locked. Bios parts.
    Got to run with a lot of time researching. With the update i used a different model number. But it ran. But not use all the board had to offer. Or software where not able to use too.
    I have 3 p700.
    I went crazy big buck new box. But there are no power supplies. Or adapters for power. So made my own.
    2080 plus water cooled. Dual.
    I did look 2699.
    Then read so much more. But no v4 will not fit.

    nice analysis, I have a 10 YEAR OLD pc with a 3930k overclocked to 4.9 GHz for those 10 years. It's been a great cpu. It has a gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 motherboard that has again been really good. I am currently running w10 and apparently can't upgrade to w11. TPM1 vs TPM2 and so on. Yet with my RTX 3090 I can play modern games such as HZD and others at highest settings and perfectly adequate frame rates (I use a 4k TV at 60 HZ). Alas, I want to run NVIDIA Cuda containers, and run Dockers and so on that require more advanced virtualisation instructions such as AVX2 and AVX 512 and VT-d. Virtualisation does not like overclocking either. I also want to use NVME ssd's and even iOptane 'ssd/memory'. So it's time to move on. The cost of modern processors is prohibitive though and does not confer that much of an advantage over the older Xeon's - provided of course that those older Xeon's have the instruction support such as AVX2 and AVX512 and virtualisation support for running local compute CUDA containers and dockers for AI training and inference and so on. Any thoughts? Am I being greedy for wanting tho be able to play games on such a device as well?
    :)

      X299 should be a good choice (its a same thing, but next gen with all stuff you listed). Tho it is much more expensive then xeons, but it have pretty much all modern features. Optane is dead btw, intel discontinued it.

    • @walkerjian
      @walkerjian 5 місяців тому +1

      thanks for the reply, the Optane support in the form of Dimms is fascinating and still very performant for certain workflows, and now that once vastly expensive servers with this tech are now quite cheap it is possible to think about using such tech in my space. Think inferencing, digital twins, other forms of content creation that would chug hard at iterating over changes if optanes dimes weren't useful in that scenario. I will look at the x299. Not holding my breath though. A server/hew solution using older repurposed tech with buckets of ram/optane dimms/ and still able to have multiple gpu's is a fascinating possibility for AI experimentation and containerisation at the home/hobbyist level. And maybe allows for an air gap to get things done without the spook perverts forever rummaging around in peoples underpants, fiddling with their bits, taking their stuff ...@@alexturnbackthearmy1907

    These old Xeon's are amazing deals if you are doing desktop or networking stuff. The abundance of PCI-E express lanes also is great if you are putting together a storage server. The only real downside is lack of integrated video (if you are only focused on desktop, and would prefer not to use some PCI-E lanes for a video card) as well as the high TDP. I've got a dual CPU Xeon server for a file storage server in my house and the whole system idles at 168 Watts. Which is really really high, probably double what a modern Ryzen system would idle at. 😔

    I am currently running a 2697v3 (14C/28T unit) with Intel Arc A770 and I have to say, for a 1440p machine... it is a great thing
    Tho to be specific as mentioned above - at 1440p, since this is a place where more and more of the work gets dropped to the GPU if you care about gaming
    I really would not recommend anyone to go into X99 anymore if all you do is gaming at 1080p, there are much better (and sometimes even cheaper, based on where you live) alternative, but if you are going for daily 1440p / 4k gaming and care more about strong GPU and CPU is secondary, then go ahead with those bases

    Even the devs are recommending at least 8 physical cores for 4k gaming
    You should try that since no one tried to play starfield less cores at higher resolution

    Have a look at Xeon W. The 2135 is $25 and the 8 core 2145 varies. Cheapest way to get it is with a whole HP Z4 or Lenovo P520/P520c. You do get an upgeade path with a Sapphire Rapids compatible BIOS. I should say I got a P520C motherboard for less than $50, and the 14-pin to 24-pim power adapter it needs is $2-$15 depending where you source it. (You can also pin your own if you feel like it. I did til my adapter came).
    Basically it's Skylake HEDT, 3.7GHz base, 4.5 boost. So if you at all have a need for 1- 6 or 8 threaded apps (*cough* gaming), I would go with Xeon W. Also it uses 2666MT/s DDR4
    I would get a card with 16 Lanes: 5700XT ($97 new) or 6700XT or better (~$200 used), so the PCIe 3.0 won't be too much of a bottleneck anyway.
