Don't be fooled by his low-key demeanor, this guy is a GENIUS. If you want to learn watercolor, save yourself a lot of time and frustration and study the tutorials of Andy Evansen.
I've studied his work for four years and have not painted, much! I am a ''detailist' and decided to stop painting and study! (Ha!) I am a decent painter, but I never saw values in this way!
One of the great things about Andy's teaching is that you get the "why" as well as the "how". I have tried to follow numerous demos by artists whose work I admire, but even after watching I'm still baffled by the process. Andy really empowers his students. Thanks, Andy!
I've seen many of your demos but this one is probably my favorite. Always love the beautiful "fresh" paintings that result from your clear and consistent process. Great work.!! Thanks to you and to Essex WC club for sharing.
i can’t believe i just saw the most important and valuable demo on watercolor today like how easy it is going to make things for me! things i could never understood like composition and value! like getting one big middle value shape which is going to be the foundation of your whole painting ! thanks Andy! ❤
Andy is addictive. I just cannot pass by a tutorial of his, I have to watch them all! A master in voice as well as his work. There is no one like Andy.

That was one of the best demos I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been painting, watercolor, all my life and you’ve set me up for new practices. Thank you.
Thank you for the video! I love Andy Evensen and his approach to taking very complicated scenes and making them into a much simpler painting process!👏👏
Wow this really was informative! I always as a novice go for painting the details first - what a major LESSON! and the final painting is just fabulous!
I like to do an underpainting l ke this with burnt sienna, burnt umber or Payne's grey, depending on the colors I'll be using in my painting. This really helps me get the right hue later on. But I think it would be best to do such a seperate value study before doing so. Thank you! 😊
Thank you for the wonderful demo. In your demo you answered a big question I was having. Just did a picture with distant hills. I had to keep adding more and more washes because they faded a lot. I was using a Princeton Silver brush, which holds a lot of water. I must have been adding too much water with each application! Switching to a brush that doesn’t carry so much water after the initial wash should help, I hope.
Glad you like the demo….I think you are on the right track about the amount of water on your brush…Don’t forget that if you start wet in wet, the paper already serves as your ‘water’ source….you don’t need to add more water when you pick up your pigment. Also, try dabbing the brush on a paper towel to remove some of the water before applying it to the paper..
I heard the guy ask about your go-to color. Someone had suggested to him cerulean blue. Seems like I see you using burnt sienna a LOT. Wonderful color. Just thought I would throw that in there!
What a super guy , And his teaching abilities are so infectious. He voice is definitely from Wisconsin. Didn’t hear a lot oh Hey’ I have great friends there . I will be applying his techniques in this demo .. Thank you Andy !
I am so so happy to learn about you and would enjoy for you to visit South Florida? I would set up a group of students for a class. Or you can come visit me. Hobe Sound Florida!!Just off Jupiter Island 🏝️
That's the point! A simple image can be made into a piece of art if you know how. Also good for instruction to show the 'know how'. 😊 I have taken away a lot from this demo. One to watch repeatedly for technique reminders.

I don’t find anything about this subject attractive and can’t understand why anyone would bother painting it. Can someone explain?
You have to be an artist to appreciate his process...
