This episode was soo helpful with the quick "fix" of not having enough yarn to cast on all my stitches! I cannot tell you how many times I have ripped out and started over in anger at myself for not having enough because there have been so many. It usually is less than 5, which is the infuriating part.
My two favorite adorable Scandinavian Princes have returned!
I've missed you both terribly.🥰
I love hearing stories about your parents and the things you learned from them. It would be awesome to also see pictures of them. 💖
😊
You are so lovely together, two people who love each other & enjoy each other’s company, everyone would be blessed to have a relationship like yours 💜
Sooo stoked to learn the hack for when you don’t have enough yarn to finish casting on! I’ve been knitting for over 40 years AND owned a yarn store, and I never heard of this before. Thank you!
You are welcome, we are never to old to learn new hacks!
Happy New Year. I love the long tail cast on and have used it for many years. I do wrap the yarn around the needle to figure out the amount of yarn. However I only wrap 10 times and take that measure and fold the yarn on itself times the number of stitches I need. For example, take the tail size for 10 stiches, fold it on itself 5 times and you have the tail size for 50 stitches. Much faster than wrapping 50 times.
That is exactly what I do. Excellent explanation !
I do the same! I've also learned not to stress if I end up with a little too much yarn in the tail!
Same here -- and I add a little extra 'just in case.' :)
Exactly what I do too, plus a little extra ‘for luck’!
Me too
Love your embroidered cloth on the table, lovely to see old needlework used.
Thank you!
I miss my mornings with coffee watching you both baking cookies. That was one of life's little but big things. I hope you will find a reason to bake more cookies for us this winter :)
Unraveling just gives you more knitting joy for your yarn buck!
Right there around the nine minute mark where you show how to add on enough extra stitches when I didn’t cast on enough is brilliant. Thank you!
You are welcome!
I’ve missed your comical banter and hope to see you again soon.
Thank you so much for this. In all my years of knitting with long tail cast on I never thought about joining more yarn like this .I always took it all out and started again. This is so much easier. As always you guys are brilliant and saved the day.
The long tail cast on is the way my mom taught me to cast on stitches. Watching this video was like coming back home or going back to my childhood. Knitting is just so much more than just knitting, isn't it?
Memories and traditions!
Gentlemen, after watching your demo (and excellent advice) for the long-tail cast-on, several times over, I'm finally able to do it! Thank you!!
Congratulations!
What a simple solution to a common problem! Good to see you again!!
Good to be back!
I am so very happy seeing you this morning. You two make my work day and I look so forward to seeing you wonderful guys everyday! I hope you have a wonderful week
Like, like, like "yarn chicken" but my chickens 🐔 got offended. Thanks so much for this mood lifter lesson.
Love seeing your mom's stash needles.
Thank you for demonstrating the cast on tips with thick bright yarn. Made it very easy to see what you were doing.
Thank you for your feedback!
You guys make my day . I always look forward to what’s new with Arne and Carlos .
I Don’t Need to Unravel- what a life saver! Thank you so much for this tip. God bless you both.
You are welcome Linda!
Love Arne matching the curtains!!
😊
Great video and super comments. Saying “I dare you” is root of “Playing chicken”. Calling yourself “chicken” is a way of saying “I am not daring”to do something from gambling on finishing a row with a questionable amount of yarn to asking someone for a date. I had three chicken episodes this week, lost all three. Love you both.
Boy. Do you know how many times I recast back on after I realized I didn't have enough yarn for the cast on . Thank you so much for this video 🤠
You are very welcome!

So happy to see your smiling faces again! Can’t wait to hear what you’ve been up to :)
So good to have you back online. So looking forward to sit and knit for a bit. Take care.x
Love this hack to stop worry about having enough yarn for my cast on 🙏
I can see it snowing outside your window. How beautiful. I have my Grandmothers needles too. 🥳
So nice to spend a few moments with you! You have been missed! ❤😘
I knit my stitches on to my needles. I find that easiest for me. Glad you are back.
Lovely to see you back Arne and Carlos, Happy New Year, you had me laughing in the very first few minutes about Arne’s shirt. Missed you guys and looking forward to another fun filled year. Thank you for the tip on adding on if you run short with the long tail cast on. Take care.
You are welcome!
I really love this episode. I have unraveled so many projects because I did not have enough yarn. My cat goes nuts when I do this. He thinks it's a toy for him. Now I know that I can break off yarn from the other loose tail of yarn, and add it in. What a great timesaving tip. Thank you so much.
You are welcome!
May be somebody already mentioned this BUT... I recently discovered that casting on for a circular needle it is actually better to put the tail over your thumb when casting on. I alway had a problem with making the connection. And now I found out this works better. Just cast on the stitches (with the tail over your tumb) separate the stitches in half. Let the loops al point up and Bob's your uncle (and yes, I know you both don't like the magic loop... but hey... I'm just sharing)
You have made the l.t. cast on the easiest I have seen. Thanks.
Yay!
That’s a good tip about running out of yarn when doing long tail cast on. Now I know too!
I was feeling a little unsettled this morning with all that is going on in our world today. The virus has reached members of my family this past week. They are all feeling better today. 🙏
When I saw you had a new video, I started your video and immediately began to feel lighter. Your videos always make me smile! 😊I’m sure this is true for others who watch your podcast. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills!🥰
Happy New Year 🎈
Happy New Year Julie and we hope your family members will be fine.
When I was a little girl a dear old Swiss lady showed me how to knit. Her cast on was the long tail and she knitted like Arne does. I can do both without looking at what I'm doing. I now am almost 80. Still knitting and casting on the same way. Love it. Thank you!
You are welcome!
I had to watch the beginning again for the laughs. Muchas gracias! Arne, you have many shirts that I like, including this curtain shirt. I also do not mind redoing the cast-on, even if it is for several times. I never want to waste any yarn. I see Arne continuing to cast on at the end of the video. He just loves the process.
It is almost like meditating
Hello everyone, so happy to join you on your podcasts
Great to see you two again! Hope you had a wonderful and restful Christmas-New Year season. Both of your mothers have given a great gift to the world - you two gentlemen.
My first thought this morning: Yay, is Arne and Carlos day!
Sitting in front of the fire with a yarn project while watching the snow fall is one of my favorite winter activities. And now I know I cast on correctly 😉
Yay!
I have lost count of the number of times I have torn out my cast on stitches because I didn’t have enough yarn pulled from the ball of yarn. This very slow knitter is very grateful.
Hi Arne and Carlos good to see you both I have all my mum's and grandmother's needles to I'm sure you will treasure your mum's Carlos ❤thank you for the long tail cast on advice I love Arne matching with the curtain 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣have a lovely week 😘😘
I taught myself to knit from a book when I was about 12 years old(haha, with pencils because I didn't have needles). It was very specific about everything -"you must do it this way only!". Like many north american knitters, I was extremely dependent on written patterns. Thankyou so much to both of you for teaching us to use our instincts and to just DO the thing without overthinking it. I have always loved knitting but I find it so much more enjoyable now that I have learned some things from you. I knew the longtail cast-on but found it frustrating to run out of tail yarn and having to start over. I watched another video where Arne explained a different way to continue and it has relieved so much stress. it's now the only cast-on that I use.
Love that you used pencils, so creative!
Yaaay you’re back. I’m looking forward to seeing different cast ins and when they’re used.
This has been so helpful, I am a new knitter and I didn't know I didn't have to recast on! Thank you so much.
You are welcome
Arnie I agree. I don’t mind unravel and knitting again. I love the knitting part.
Such a delight to see your cheerful faces again! And I learned how to save the cast-on when I lose at yarn-chicken!
Your laughter strted my day off with a smile! Thank you
Have a lovely day!
Thank you for this explanation ,this really helps this novice knitter.
“Once you know how it’s easy”. Love that!! Now I am on the 3rd Christmas ball and it makes total sense to knit with 5 needles! I never thought I would get there. It’s easy once you “get” it!! 🥰
I always learn something new when I watch your videos!
That is so great to hear, that is what we aim to do!
So nice to have you back starting with laughters.🤣🤣🤣 Lovely also to see the snow through the window in the background. If you have that kind of ball where you can knit from both ends, and you don't mind weaving in one more end, you can do the long tail cast on using both ends, one on the thumb, the other one on the index. That way you always have eactly the amount of yarn needed for your cast on. I use this method when I have to cast on many stitches
Thank you for the tip Nicole!
So happy to see you again.
Great to be back!
Yes you are genius. Thank God I have found you! I got the knitting magazine today, announcing your yarn with Rowan. I can not wait to try it! Thank you for being Arne and Carlos!
Thank you for supporting us!
Thank you Arne and Carlos.
Hi Arne and Carlos! Thank you so much for demonstrating how to solve the problem of running out of yarn during the long tail cast on! It has happened to me many times and I began all over again! Now I know I don’t have to! Carlos, your mother’s needles are lovely. Years ago they didn’t have circular needles and the straight needles were very long. But still, they belonged to your mother and I am sure very precious to you! Thank you and I hope to see you soon!
Nice to have you back, Arne Carlos....I’m AlmOst 60 and never tried this !!!! It makes so much sense!!!!🤣so easy!!!....all these years unraveling 😂🤷🏻♀️🇲🇽
Thank you! That bit of information about cutting the yarn and finishing wth a new strand is one of the best I've ever heard in my 82-year career of knitting! Wish someone had taught me that years ago. Although I'm not easily frustrated with knitting, and although I'm resigned to ripping out and starting over, it's so much nicer to start out with a happy heart.
I hope 2022 blesses you with good health and all good things! (And not just because of the knitting tip.)
Happy New Year Frances!
Thanks for the tutorial. It‘s the cast on method I use the most and so did my mother and grandmother. I also usually eye ball the tail, but for a lot of stitchesI start with a loop made by the two ends of a ball of yarn or two balls. After casting on all stitches I cut the unneeded end - you cannot run out of yarn that way. If You like cast on one stitch more and open the loop, so you haven‘t a bulky knot at the end. You might also mark every 50 or 100 stitches with a removable marker or a piece of contrasting yarn. For socks knitted with 2.5 mm you can measure the tail with a 20 cm DPN - 1 needle length makes around 15 stitches (I always add a little more for safety).
So nice to see your faces again. Love the tip on what to do if you run short on your cast on. I’ve never seen that before. Yarn chicken usually refers to running out of yarn for the whole project.
Welcome back 😊 thank you for the great tip of adding more stitches ! ❤️🇨🇦
Nice to see you guys! Thanks for the lesson about running short on yarn when casting on! Brilliant!
It is so good to see you back!
Good to be back😊
Lovely to see you both back . Have missed you.
😊
So happy to learn how to manage yarn shortage and not have to unravel and start over. Thank you!
Happy New Year, Arne and Carlos! I'm late to the party, as usual, but still glad to join in on the fun. I laughed when you mentioned Arne blending in with the curtains and Arne using the needles as drum sticks. LOL.
It's really nice that you have your mom's long needles. That's all that was available once. You would tuck the left needle under your left arm, and it would anchor your knitting.
I love the long-tail cast-on, it's what I grew up with, but I have been doing it the way you do (the left hand maneuvering), ever since you first taught the basics in knitting on your channel. It is so quick, and it makes for a lovely, stretchy rib. I will admit to being one of the ones who would fret and stress and unravel the whole thing if I didn't have enough yarn, so your tip on how to add more yarn is PRECIOUS. Thank you thank you thank you! 🥰
great tip with just adding yarn and keep going! love it, thank yu!
You are welcome!
This was how I was shown to get the correct amount of yarn for the cast on. Take 1 needle and wrap around 10 times if you need 30 for the cast on. Now take the yarn off the needle (to be used as a measuring tape) and measure 10+10+10=30: Now you have the amount of yarn to use for cast on. So if you need 210 Drs for
Arne your sense of humour is the best! So glad for this video all makes sense now.
We are glad to hear that!
Gosh it’s good to see you guys again. You’re looking rested and relaxed. I too like the long-tailed cast on and have pulled many a stitch off because I didn’t have enough yarn. Thanks so much for the tip on how to add more stitches with ease.
You are welcome!
Great hack, I never thought "prolongating" it by cutting off the yarn and adding a few more stitches! (...I always started again from the beginning....)Thank you!!
You are welcome
So happy you are back. January has not seemed normal without seeing you both. Arne love your matching shirt and curtain design. Like Cissa K, I also wrap only 10 times, then divide total stitches by 10 to figure out how many lengths I need for all stitches. Also wrap loosly around only 1.
Wonderful trick for adding more yarn to the cast on! Thanks so much.
You are welcome!
Love the long tail cast on. Only one I use. Good to see ya’ll.
You know after I watched this, I missed you both so much I just had to binge watch about 10 shows! I’ve decided to go back and revisit all the old shows you made over the years! I’m learning a lot!!! Thankyou for all you do!!!
You are welcome and thank you so much for supporting us😊
Ok you are true designers when you can match curtains...LOL!!!!
Loved the tutorial on the long tail cast on and how to solve the problem of running out of tail...aka yarn chicken! I also like the knit on cast on when you have many stitches to make. This way you don't have to worry about running out of tail.
Never again!
so glad to have you back ❤️❤️❤️
Good to be back
THANK YOU !!!!!!! Do you know how many times I have started over counting because I didn't have enough yarn? And then there's the times when I over estimated how much I needed and ended up with way to much of a tail which is a waste of yarn!! Good Lord........no more of that nonsense for me now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
I always use the long tail cast on. Thanks for the great tips!
Arne and Carlos was great seeing you and your mom’s needles. Hope you are enjoying yourselves and your beautiful outside area. Please pet Freya and Helmer for me
Will do!
I’ve been knitting for many years but I never even thought that I could just keep going if I ran out of yarn casting on!! Love you two and glad to see you!!💕💕Marsha
This is my favorite cast-on, but I do enjoy learning other techniques.
We will do a series of different cast ons
@@ARNECARLOS I would love this.
“There’s no shame” in starting again. I love that. Happy new year.
Love the backdrop, the snow, beautiful embroidery and the lovely curtains. You videos always bring me joy!
So nice to gave y'all back with helpful tutorials. I like the long tall but prefer the German twist for socks or hats. Very similar cast on. Y'all make it easier. Thank you.
I use this one as well.
Pick up knitting again and love this type of casting
Looking forward to more knitting hints and tips in coming videos
Hope you had a nice break and glad to see you back
Take care 🇨🇦 🧶 ❤️
See you soon!
Thank you for the demonstration and tips on the long tail cast on. I really enjoy you guys!
Thank you Jan!
Another excellent tutorial! Thank you so much!
Nice to see you back!! I got the Christmas ball book for Christmas!! Can't wait to knit them! I learned something new today, thank you!
Welcome back. You have been missed. I like the long tail cast on method but avoided it for bigger projects because I always ran out of wool not realising you could make a join in the cast on row. You learn something every day. XAngela
True!
You two are the best. You both make knitting so accessible. I use the slip knot long tail method but I really like Arne's way of doing it. My partner's mom has been giving me her needles and crochet hooks because she too has given up the craft. I enjoy using the wooden DPN's thinking how many hats she must have made with them. Well, I enjoy using them until I nearly take out my eye while working a hat decrease!
Glad you are back!
❤️
WOW THANK YOU FOR THIS FABULOUS LESSON OF CASTING ON ❤❤❤❤ I WILL USE THIS FROM NOW ON 😘😘
Carlos I would love to see a demonstration of Spanish knitting.
I am long tail caster but would love to see other ways of casting on. Thanks for sharing.
A very happy healthy good year full of colours and fun
I met a lady raised in Panama. Her needles were possibly 2 feet long. She held one needle in her armpit. They made all their blankets on straight needles too. No circular needles. 🧶🪡
I saw a hack on UA-cam. She used two yarns tied the two ends together and she never ran out of for her long tail cast on. LOL left the fact that Arnie mailed it into the curtains just a space showing 😃
Great tips...thank you! I recently saw another "hack" for long tail cast on. To work from the inside and outside of the ball, you never have to worry about not estimating enough of a tail...after you cast on your desired # of stitches you cut one of the strands (I prefer to work from the inside of the ball so I would cut the outside strand)
Thank you both, so nice to get your great tips and reassurance for distressing coming up short on the cast on etc. as I sit cozy by a window (like yours) overlooking a little snowy frozen lake in Canada.
