You are exactly right, they just sound different from other engines, and others are close to that sound, but not exactly.
Also when you drive one and really hear and feel the smooth torque they have, well there's nothing else quite like it, especially the Stage 1 engines.
Can’t part from my 70 Saturn yellow GSX....even after 43 years! The car is awesome!

My brother had his 1972 Stage 1 Skylark, and was an idiot for selling it, and had I known that he was going to, I would have bought it from him but he was a thousand miles away from where I lived at the time and I had no idea he was selling it.
This car is so much nicer than any of those other cars mentioned. My brother had a 1972 Stage 1 white like this one that was just as fast and as beautiful. It wasn't a GSX, but it was just as awesome of a car, and it was a true Stage 1 car. I'm a Buick kid, and it's been my heritage. My father worked for Buick Motor Division for years, and is why it's in my blood!
Those who have never driven or ridden in one of these cars will never understand.
Yes today's technologies in today's world cars today can easily out run these cars on top end, but considering that these are 50 year old technology they can definitely hold their own with today's cars in the quarter mile, and are so much simpler to work on than the stuff today.
They were a dream to drive too, because they were Buicks!
Part of enjoying classic cars and especially classic muscle cars is being "educated" enough to know what you're looking at. Most people just see a classic car and might think that they don't see those very often, which certainly is true nowadays, and think that it's just "nice". Only the true enthusiast can appreciate what that car is and what it represented back in the day and even more so now due to it's rarity. Nice find! 😀

Thank you Barrett/Jackson for making muscle cars impossible for the average guy to own. In the mid 80s, 2-5 thousand $$ would buy most anything. Now it's 200-500 thousand.
@@chevyblue10 Not nearly 200-500 thousand for most of these kinds of cars, most of them range in the high 10s of thousands and a few can break 6 figures. Only the collector type cars go for higher than that.
Hemi Killer
The lead power plant engineer in charge of developing this engine said ""The whole focus of the Stage 1 was going fast on the street" With a massive 510 lb/ft of torque just off idle it was intimidating in stop light to stoplight racing that was so common back in those days. It was practically unbeatable stock for stock on the street in legal street trim.
DONDIVA1969 A red 1970 Stage 1 GS model cleaned house in the 1987 Musclecar Showdown pure stock class, I believe it came down to that GS and a black HEMI Road Runner (or maybe it was orange) I need to go back through my video collection/library and see which Mopar it was that made it to the finals against the Buick. That GS kicked everything's ass..... Ram Air III's and IV's, LS6's, Super Duty 455's, 426 HEMI's, 440-6's, Boss 429's and the kill list goes on, lol. I tell ya what the biggest disappointment car was for me, was the 67-68 Mustang Shelby 428 GT500 models. People talk them up so much but in reality they were a low 14 second car in stock form, also the Boss 302 (which was actually more of a road racer, not drag racer) was only a high 14 second car just as it's arch rival, the Camaro Z/28 302 models which also ran consistent high 14 second times. I have an old shootout article from the late '80s where Motor Trend put a new 1989 Camaro IROC-Z with the G91/1LE option and 230hp/300tq 5.0 liter TPI (Tuned Port) manual 5-speed against the 1969 Camaro Z/28 with the DZ-302 and 290hp/290tq (hp was calculated differently in 1969 compared to 1989, in reality if the newer cars were tested the same the '89 would probably come in at around 250-275hp) anyway, the 230hp 5-liter 1989 Camaro ran a 14.6 to the 290hp 5-liter 1969 Camaro 14.8 time. So many of the classics have had their reputations exaggerated through the years lol..... in reality the 5.0 Mustangs of the mid-late '80s and early '90s were competitive with most of the classic late '60s - early '70s Musclecars.... the average Musclecars, not the legendary models like the LS6 SS, 455 GS, 426 HEMI cars..... and of course the crazy 427 Shelby Cobra and 427 ZL1 models, lol, they were supercars and still nuts by today's standards, lol. By the mid '90s the Mustang Cobra and Camaro SS were putting out over 300hp and a few years later over 400hp. Look at these brand new Ponycars like the Challenger, Camaro and original Ponycar, the Mustang. They are making 425hp to 500hp off the showroom floor and can kick the crap out of the old classics. God I love American Iron, just love it!!! lol. Sorry for the rant and rambles, I just love chatting with other car guys like yourself. I could chat with you fellas all day about the old days and even the late-models of today. I love 'em all, lol. I love the "stoplight to stoplight" reference.... nothing like a lightweight Musclecar/Ponycar torque terror with 4.56 gears to drag someone's ass stoplight to stoplight, lol.

Back then a lot of racing was done on the street with stock or nearly stock cars. I got to see what they could really do. You are so right about the difference in the methods of measuring horsepower from the 60’s to the era of SAE net. Before net ratings engines were dyno’d with no accessories, no air filter, open exhaust (sometimes headers) timing adjusted to the edge of detonation and optimized air fuel mixture. The claims were exaggerated. SAE net is as installed sitting between the fenders.
Two of the strongest engines cars back then were developed and rated near SAE specs. These were the 428 CJ and the Buick Stage 1. The engineer who lead development of the Buick Stage engines says that every performance enhancement of the 455 Stage 1 was geared toward optimizing usable power on the street.
It was designed to produce maximum horsepower with full exhaust, air filter and accessories something unusual for the era. He said a stronger cam did not show any gain because it was run through a closed exhaust as you would on the street. He said it produced 376 horsepower fully dressed.
And that is why the Stage 1 would routinely beat cars like the LS6 rated at 450 hp and the 426 Hemi cars. Kenne-Bell took a showroom fresh Stage 1 drove it to the track and ran a 13.9 et without touching it. For reference a strong 440 GTX would get you mid to high 14’s without being tuned.
A Ford engineer who worked with Tasca to develop the factory 428 CJ said in a interview that the 335 hp rating of that engine was close to the installed horsepower or SAE net.
DONDIVA1969 I'm an old dude too, lol.... back in the mid-'80s (when I was 16 years old) I got a job at a local service/gas station in Northern Virginia, which was the "hot rod" hangout, which was entirely the whole reason I got the job there, so I could mingle with all the gearheads and be around all these awesome musclecars. That was one of the greatest experiences and best memories of my life. During the day we would wrench on these cars and cruise with the hoods off, lol, and almost every night we would go out away from population and race. Many of these kids were "rich kids" that had some amazing cars. One fella even had an RS/SS 396 Camaro, and that was even an extremely rare one back in those days, lol.... another young co-worker from the service station had a 1970 RT Challenger 383 and another had a nasty little primer 1970 Dart with a built 318 w/ 340 heads, big purple cam, rev-man tranny and nasty set of gears, and I tell ya that little Dart made more of an impression on me than any other car in my life, lol. Him and the other regular kids like myself worked our asses off just to pull enough cash together for a decent Chevelle (that's what I had at the time) or other common V8 powered car with a little potential. Some of the rich kids also had brand spanking new 5.0 Mustangs, Formula 350s and TPI or L69 H.O) IROC-Z models. I was really intrigued with those late-model EFI performance cars as I was reading about them in the latest issues of Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Car & Driver, etc.... I suppose that is why the Fox-body Mustang and 3rd Gen F-body are the models most close to my heart (that and they are more affordable, lol) but those old classics really are something special.

its rare to even see 20 year old cars around here. i have a 1996 camaro and i really dont see too many of them on the road anymore. its really rare to see a car that's 40 years old. sadly most of today's cars are boring cookie cutter crap.

I was fortunate enough to have a 70 GS 455. Red with white vinyl top and white interior. Loved that car
most likely a clone, GSX's did not receive the GS badge on the trunk lid and under the hood stage 1 GS or GSX's would have had chrome valve covers. Might be a GS 455 with GSX paint and spolier, which is still a nice car i would have left it original though a GS 455 is rare enough.

Of course, the 70' was the King but, I managed to get a 72' Stage 1 project from Minnesota. Rotted floors and trunk but the body was straight and quarter panels decent and, of course a true Stage 1 455. This one has a bench seat but, I bought buckets and a console to maybe convert it over in a few years. Put my dream of owning a house on-hold to buy this project. We only live once.

What originally drew me to Buick was of course, the Buick muscle cars were significantly less expensive than the GTO's & Chevelle's but, as I learned more and more about Buick, I really loved them as the "underdog" that a many people(including some so-called Gearheads) scoffed and shook their heads at as the car "my Grandpa drives." Yet, BuickS GS Stage 1 is arguable the GREATEST muscle car of all-time. The 1970 455 engine had gobs of low-end torque and could eat-up a Chevelle easily on the track and, of course was known as the "Hemi-Killer." One more thing which any Buick owner should be proud of is Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, etc. was that General Motors was founded from Buick by Buick General Manager William C. Durant in 1908. Founded in 1904, Buick is the oldest American automobile brand and, of course, they are still active. 800,000 Chinamen can't be wrong either. GM's sales in China each year reach 800,000+ on average compared to 200,000 here in the good ole' USA. I think my next NEW car will be a Buick as well. I love my ole' 2008 Saab 93 (another GM casualty and underappreciated brand) but, eventually it will be time to move-on!

In 1975 at 17 I bought one, being raised in a Buick family, the first time my dad drove it he said you rack up ticket in it I won’t have a problem taking it. I said well I’ll just drive your 69 Electra. He laughed and said no you will drive the 66 Country Squire, I never did get a ticket nor did I ever lose a race in it.

Had a friend get killed on the job a couple years ago. His girlfriend scrapped everything including his all original GSX.
The fact people still think these only had 370 hp and not around 425 amazes me. Insurance costs,so underrated.And yes that's a shit box sushi powered rice rocket at the end.

Love these cars, and this is stunning. In 1988 my buddy sold his 1969 GS for a mid 80's Z28- I tried to talk him out of it. Well, he tracked it down two years ago and bought it back, for about 5 times what he sold it for...

In a drag race between a Hemi and a GS Stage 1, the GS would put a couple of car lengths on the Hemi at the start, but the Hemi would catch it and win (barely) at the end. Those big Hemi heads didn't really start to breathe until it was tached up. But there's no question that the Stage 1 was one of the premiere street cleaners back in the day, right up there with the best. They really were in dire need of bigger back tires, the massive torque would blow those skinny Polyglas tires away for half a block.
This is the classic matchup....Stage 1 gets the holeshot, and then looks in his rearview mirror.....hoping the Hemi doesn't catch him at the top end! Love both the Hemis, and the Stage 1's.
@@gary9426 not on the street where the stage 1 was designed to run. A better match up might be a Buick stage 2 car on the track. I know there few stage 2 cars ,but it would be interesting to see . I don't think this monster movie of a race has ever been done. A factory spec stage 2 built GS and a factory spec hemi Super Bee would be a pay per view event.
@@markbuchanan3694 You are right, Mark..the Stage 1 was designed as a street engine...massive torque at low RPM.. the Hemi was a detuned race motor designed for oval/dragstrip racing, but wasn't a street warrior. The 440 was much more of a street racing motor. The race you mentioned would be one for the ages....give me a front row seat! The '70 W-30 4-4-2 was another GM car that kinda flew under the radar back in the day...it had massive torque like the GS, and could hold it's own with the quickest musclecars of the day...
No, not really. Google "Hot Rod Hemi Killer and watch a '70 GS Stage 1 take down two Hemis on the same day for a magazine shootout. Neither Hemi came close to "running it down at the end".

when I blew the motor in my 1967 Buick GS 400 I replaced it with a 455 stage 1 out of a 1970 Buick GS that have been crashed that car was scary fast

I don't think it is a real GSX. GSXs did not have the trunk GS badges, plus the Stage 1option had chrome valve covers, not red ones. Still a beautiful car.

Can't remember the year late 80s but they settled the debate when they raced a Stage 1 against a 426 hemi Coronet . Both cars tan high 12s but the Coronet won both races.
We have a few of these '80s shootout matches on the channel.
No such debate was ever settled by just one race. Proof? Dec. 1984, G'ville Raceway. Just google "Hot Rod Hemi Killer" and see what happened.

I'm a late fifties child, and I remember these cars. Of all the muscle cars from that time period, the GSX was my favorite. I have witnessed them beating Hemi's, big block chevy's, as well as most if not all Ford H.O.'s. Thanks for posting, I wish I had sense enough to snatch one back in the day. 🤔
A friend had an all original GSX. He was killed in a work accident. The next day his girlfriend hauled it across the scales for just over 200 bucks.

Ken Bell can make a 3500 pound Buick pull the wheels up and turn a 10 with a 455. My Olds with a Mondello build could pull stumps all day with it's low rpm torque. Not all the best GM's have a bowtie.

The 1970 GSX out weighed the others by around 300lbs also, because it was a luxury car with all the bells and whistles.

purchased one in 91 that some moron had turned into a future car complete with 300lbs of glass all around the bottom of the car. this guy thought he was making the batmobile. anyhow. 700 hrs later and the car was a perfect stage 1 GSX . to make it better yet, it was a very rare hurst 4spd equipped car. factory. the car ran like a dream and the original miles where a low 76,000. around the same time my brother father and i started our race car project which consisted of one 1969 buick skylark special. itreceivedd a fully built 462ci with modified trany and some gears to match. the trany also had a 3500 stall. the next car was a 67 buick wagon with a 430 with stage one heads and cam. also many other goodies for this mill. including pistons and so much more. it was a huge joy to watch this sleeper destroy everything it cam across. big block chevy camaros and the like. when it did meet the rare car that could take it out came the skylark. on one occasion my brother, not the same one, bought a 69 GTX, well talk about a fast car and talk about him talking shit. lol. anyhow you know how this one goès. he wanted to race for pinks and we where happy to oblige. i will never say i had a car i liked owning more than that 69 GTX. what a work of art and wonderful power was its game. my brother was a dumb ass moron, sorry bro but you where. and i will take a car off your hands any time you like. today i have a 69 gs 462. its a different car but its much the same. it is setup as a car for the street but it has its mean streak as you can guess. love driving it and its as good as any new car could hope to be. i cant wait to run in with a hellcat.

It would probably be a toss-up between a LS6 Chevelle SS w/ Muncie 4-speed, and a 455 Super Duty Trans Am, and a GSX. I really want a DZ code 302 powered Camaro Z/28 though.
A friggin engineer told me the two bolt main blocks were garbage. I said "yeah if you didn't take care of the oil. Otherwise shove your biased Chevy shit." I've seen the ls6 get spanked off the line at pure stock drags by those two bolt mains. And I know alot of ceazed up 454 blocks in the junkyards.

That being said: always wish Imcould have tracked a Stage/ GSX( ?) / HemiCUDA down in 1970 : as my first NEW CAR was a 1970 CORONET 500/ loaded except a/ C/ 383/ Turquoise: planning to improve with SUPer Bee/RT / Dodge Connection stuff ( we did some). But,we probably could not afford the BUICK/HEMI’s as i just graduated from Pharmacy School( Purdue) in 1970 , & Wife had two Semesters ( etc)..Anyways, the FUN thing was trying out**looking for new Car; as our 66 500/ XL/4 Speed/352( boo: but reasonably economical & I improved it), was high mileage….Anyways, had seen 70 SUPERBIRD *& TOO LONG,& Dramatic , expensive at Lafayette, Indiana…Had taken home/ test drive 70 DART 340/ 4 BBL-loaded Special /tires/Build/ SUSP/POLICE( ?)4/DOOR ,oddly that was a appealing,& screamer.. Also, Dodge dealer next to PHARMACY where I worked had 70 Challenger /SE/RT/MAGNUM/ 4 Speed ,but LOADED with every option & Green /top/interior/Body GreenColor( we not like Dodge Green then)….And , also interestingly, DODGE DEALER had put in some **70 AMC MACHINES( Red/White/ Blue), & a REBEL ((??, memory , as I stopped in just to see the AMC)………fun times with FORD MOTORCRAFT , DODGE , MOPAR CONNECTION / AMC RACING OVER-the-Ciunter, TO build on your Car!

I have seen no 455 Buick’s in top fuelers, nor have I seen them run in NASCAR. The Buick has niche legendary status, the legend of Hemi is omnipresent.

Dude if I could do it all over again I would have gotten it fixed...but I was young and didn't know what I had....I can say I never got out run the whole time I had it!...lol
James Wiggins Back in the late '90s I had a shop/garage and the guy that had a shop next to me had a Grand National with no title and a knock in the motor.... he told me $1,500 I could have it, but I figured it would be a pain to get a new title. The car was in nice condition too. I think about it all the time now, lol.....
Yeah..I came across the deal of a lifetime when I found that gnx...my uncle had it and he does paint and body like me..so the paint in it was immaculate.. Interior was all new..motor had duttweiler(excuse the spelling)heads,cam,intake,80lg injectors..etc etc..my best time was a 6.47 with traction issues..and all the street races I ran...never got out run:)...but I only had it 5 weeks and some ass pulled out in front of me and BLAM...no more gnx....good news is I paid 5800$ bucks for it and ins. gave me 17500 for it...so that was the only + to the whole story

YES IT'S A 455 STAGE # 1, BODY, BUT IT HAS A BIG BLOCK CHEVY ENGINE IN IT. BUICK ALWAYS HAD A OIL SYSTEM PROBLEM THAT IF YOU RACED, YOU COULD SPIN A ROD BEARING IN THEM . LET'S FACE IT, THEY TRIED TO COMPETE WITH THE W-30 HURST OLDS BE FAILED ONLY TO THE COLLECTOR. MOST OF THE OWNERS DROPPED CHEVY ENGINES IN THEM. THE BUICK MOTORS WOULDN'T HOLD TOGETHER FOR RACING. No olds, Chevy, Buick and Pontiac all had their own blocks. All 455s except Chevy was 454.

The 1970 Buick GS is a beautiful car and fast in the 1/4. The 1970 HEMI Road Runner was a quarter mile beast. Plymouth set these monsters for the 1/4 mile. Using the 727 the GS was just not there. Close but no Cigar.

Yes, please pass the cigars. Sure these GS Stage 1's could beat a Hemi on the strip. Video proof? Just google "Hot Rod Hemi Killer" and see for yourself. Two Hemis taken down by one street GS on the same day. the GS was driven to the track; the Hemis were trailered.

Sold my 70' stage-1 in o5' mild c-113 Poston cam, headers, b4b intake, 950 h.p. holly carb, 4:56:1 gears, slicks, drove it daily, 11:50 e.t. all day long! Chevy boys ,and ford guys hated it! Buick just don't get the live they deserve!

Is this all original? Because if so that car is worth a TON. As is the Saturn yellow Buick GSX (standard color) is rare and valuable. The white GSX is worth a LOT because it was a limited edition color scheme.

I punched mine 30 over stock cam n lifters.it pulled the wheel off the ground if you launched it right. Pulled it out of a 73wagon. Lol. I ate 5.0s for lunch
