In English “cake” means a sweet baked pastry but is also used for any food that is flat, round, and fried on both sides in a flat pan. Pan-cakes (egg, butter, and wheat flour), Johnny cakes (pancakes with corn instead of wheat), crab cakes (bread crumb and crab meat), and these potato cakes are examples. Khan is correct that “cutlet” is mostly interchangeable with cake in English, but usually refers to meat. Cutlets are usually breaded and pounded with a hammer to make them thin and flat before frying in the pan.

Seems like everyone has some form of potato patty / pancake dish, not just Jews, or whoever... There's forms of this in nearly every country that uses potatoes. ;) We have hash browns or tater tots, they have potato pancakes, or potato latkes, Irish "Boxty," Swedish Rarakor or Potatisbulla or raggmunkar or potatisplattar, etc.
In the old days cakes were fried in a pan, on a wood stove. Corn cakes, flap jacks (pancakes), potato cakes. A lot of baking was done in skillets and dutch ovens.
This sound delicious! Please share with us the recipe! Also, it may be bland in comparison, but you should try Irish potato cakes. You can take day old plain mashed potato, combine with flour and a pinch of baking soda and salt, then fry in butter (or ghee... omg that's so naughty!) Thank you for keeping me calm and feeling loved. You are all such kind people 💛 ☺
I throughly enjoy watching these gentlemen try different foods, especially sweets! I would love to see them try one of my favorites since childhood, Jiff Crunchy Peanut Butter! Then a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 😊
Back before people had microwaves, mother made potato pancakes with leftover mashed potatoes. Flour and egg were mixed with the mashed, patties made and fried in butter - delicious, especially if there was also leftover gravy. After I moved away and married, I thought I would be clever and do the same with leftover baked sweet potatoes - not to be recommended - they were nasty. Mr C had a good idea though, putting cheese in them would be wonderful!
I’m curious how these were made. We have a couple of different kinds here in the US. I would love to try these. In fact it would be fun if you put up the recipes you use in a lot of your videos so we can make them too 😊
The ones I make, usually have, mashed potato, onion, herbs, egg and cheese, mix it all together, shape them to the size you want (like you would when making a meat patty/rissole or burger) then fry them

Interesting, in their culture, and mine too ( Hispanic) we associate the word cake with sweets, like a birthday cake or a wedding cake. Probably, because we all took that word from the English language, where are different kinds of food items that can be cakes, like this potato cake, crab cakes, pancakes, etcetera. So it explains perfectly how they go surprised initially, by not having a sweet cake this time.

Yeah, English uses words in a few different ways sometimes. Yes, there are sweet bready "cakes" for like birthday parties or as dessert. But there are also things like crab "cakes," fish cakes, potato cakes, which you could also say something like "patties", IE a small round/flat shaped thing that's been patted together, or patted/pressed flat into like the shape of a hockey puck... I know, it's confusing when the same words are used slightly differently in different contexts. ;)
