I believe David means it when he says he wishes he saw Bianca grow up, but he had another daughter he walked away from and had no intention of see her and her son anytime soon until Joe turned up. Of course his other daughter died, but he didn't know.

Bianca was so toxic
Sam was worse in my opinion. They were both jealous of each other and Bianca was gobby, but Sam was conniving. Bianca genuinely loved and wanted Ricky, but Sam was just jealous because she found someone else and her ego couldn't handle it.
