    LEO or Low Earth Orbit is a massive amount of space. 1,292,613,096,000,000 cubic meters to be exact. For comparison, Earth is 1,080,000,000,000 km³ or 120 times less volume then LEO.

    • @pim1943
      @pim1943 6 років тому +33

      It is a big problem. If the big litter collides and becomes smaller litter, and that collides and becomes even smaller, then eventually you are going to have huge (for lack of a better name) 'clouds' of tiny fragments. Eventually that might cover so many parts of that portion of space that it becomes nearly impossible to launch anything into orbit. This was all explained in the video. Did you watch it?

    • @SightUnseen555
      @SightUnseen555 6 років тому +19

      It would have many problems. The main one being that most of the debris is tiny, less than 1cm, so the mesh would have to be incredibly fine to catch everything. The second thing is that the debris is moving at very high speeds so it'd also have to be extremely strong (which is in direct contradiction with it being extremely fine)
      It'd also need a large surface area but not get knocked around and off course by its collisions with the particles it's collecting. And even if we could make it so large, its size would still be tiny compared to the volume of space its intended to scrub clean.

    • @nothandmade9686
      @nothandmade9686 6 років тому +4

      You may be joking however ideas like that are floating around. The principle it that a net or blanket would create a little drag causing small debris and itself to return to Earth.

      a HUGE TRAMPOLINE

  • @daniele_93
    @daniele_93 6 років тому +227

    I'm an aerospace engineer and I'm currently studying space and astronautical engineering. I can tell you the space debris is already quite a problem, there are many ideas to solve it but nothing so effective and revolutionary. At the time the only way to avoid collisions is the ground tracking of the largest objects, and even the ISS sometimes has to do an avoidance maneuver to keep some debris at a safety distance. Smaller pieces like paint flecks however are not trackable and this is a major problem since even a few millimeters fragment could cause a disaster when hitting a satellite at a relative speed of some km/s. A few months ago I dedicated myself in trying to find some ideas but everyting that seemed to be interesting resulted almost uneffective, or not economically convenient. But I assure you that me and many other space engineers are very concerned about it and a solution will eventually be found, since otherwise it will be a total disaster not only for space exploration but for everyday's life. And last but not least I have to point out a small mistake in the video, since not all the debris is destined to fall back to the Earth. In vacuum there is no source of energy loss and for example a geostationary or geosynchronous satellite debris will orbit forever. The only decay is due to the atmospheric drag, that has a noticeable effect only below 600 kms (the ISS orbits at ~400 km and periodically does correction maneuvers to raise the orbit), so a low orbit debris will maybe be destroyed in the atmosphere in a few years but higher ones will not.
    Cheers from Italy :)

      @wesleywallace4426 6 років тому +4

      DannyMeteora It wasn't a mistake. Not even the Moon will stay in Earth's orbit forever, so the chances of perfect geostationary space junk causing a problem for our space craft is practically nonexistent.

    • @daniele_93
      @daniele_93 6 років тому +4

      Wesley Wallace I know that there are other effects but in human times the only perturbation that can cause the deorbiting in a few month or years is the atmospheric drag, so GEO satellites will stay there for a long time. This is in fact a minor problem though, since there are much less GEO satellites than LEO ones

Perhaps they'd just annihilate us with energy weapons and wait for it to clear up. Perhaps they have a means of clearing it up themselves using gravity or something.

The radius of orbit makes a greater area than the surface of the ocean. What makes you think that there would be a high probability of impact on such an enormous scale, especially when accounting for the additional variability of altitude?

    I can see a lucrative future career for someone who builds up a business based on using unmanned craft to grab defunct satilites, haul them back to a salvaging station, and break down the parts for sale. Quite lucrative, since one of the biggest problems with operating in space is actually GETTING things to space due to the massive amounts of fuel.

Humans behave like the worse vermin in the animal kingdom. Everywhere humans go they destroy the environment. Land, sea, air and now space, we have even put our junk on the moon and other planets in the solar system. NASA even left an old car on the moon:-). I do not think there is anywhere that humans have visited, where they have not left rubbish and made it worse than before they arrived. Maybe it is fitting that humans will be trapped on this planet, until they learn to clean up the mess they make.

      Actually, I would argue if they had the advanced technology for interstellar travel in a decent timeframe, even if their purpose is to conquer planets inhabited by life, they would not be halted by any field of matter surrounding a planet mostly because they should be able to destroy this planet through means not involving entering our atmosphere or orbit.

    Why dont we put reverse and normal electro magnets on the sattelites so if space debree gets very close you can activiate the reverse electromagnet so the junk will just be puched to another direction and if the satellite gets punched away from earth (because earth is the biggest magnet) we can activate the normal magnet that gets us in the right distance again

    Why are the small pieces still in orbit? Wouldn't the collisions knock them off their velocity and send them either into space or down to Earth?

    • @hunormagyar1843
      @hunormagyar1843 5 років тому

      Well... Problem is that, they can hit each other from literally anywhere. If one was just thrown into space and is about to fall back, while the other hits it, if they have about the same mass, they both will fall down. Or they also slow down if they come from the opposite direction, then collide.
      But if they hit each others "from the side" for example, they might not go down...

  • @TankedPk
    @TankedPk 6 років тому

    you know that if you both have near the same velocity the impact is way less? they can only orbit in earth's moving direction, so if ther is too much spacejunk, you need to hit the same speed before entering leo. So im missing a point, could you explain please?

You would die because no organism can stand outer space which only contains 5 elements from the chart. A rocket would have an instant negative reaction to those combined elements and would explode. Now that you read that you’re probably wondering how we got to the moon. We didn’t. 😒

    mel brooks had it right with his space vacuum cleaner. we need one that really works though...
    perhaps lasers/masers and magnetic fields can help?
    like a fusion reactor and a loop of superconducting wire 500 km in diameter. the energy will also be used for that tool to navigate and travel.
    it's a dynamic thing. detect debris and modulate the magnetic field in a way it slows down the majority of objects within its reach.

  • @TheRimmot
    @TheRimmot 6 років тому +105

    Ironic how he advertises Brilliant as a way to learn orbital mechanics, yet still doesn't get it right.
    The orbital velocity at low earth orbit is around 28000km/h. Now imagine the orbit as a 2d plane around the equator. Objects can travel in both directions. So the 2 possible velocities for colliding are ~0km/h and ~56000km/h.
    Now because earth is a sphere there are an infinite number of angles between 0° and 360° that a collision can happen in. so the possible collision velocities at LOE are ~0-56000km/h, not the 22000km/h mentioned in the video.
    The kessler syndrome would be devastating, but it wouldn't destroy everything. For example the GPS is way up in the geostationary orbit as such this debris can't affect it in any way.
    Why is it so hard to open wikipedia?

    I have to say, this is the first video you've made that hasn't sat well with me. One reason I like your channel so much is that you don't play on the imagination to blow people's minds - you give the hard facts and explain them plainly and effectively. But the biggest thing to me is that, in your other videos, you don't have an agenda. In this video, you said a lot of "scary" things, but didn't back it up with numbers. You talked about the tragedies that could happen, but you didn't tell us how likely these things are to occur (e.g. the rate of collision). It really seemed like you had an agenda to conform your viewers to your view point, and I feel this is a first for you.
    I'm not going to tell you how to run your channel, but I thought you'd appreciate this feedback. Other than what I already said, I enjoyed the video as usual - you did a good job with it!

      Yeah... To me this channel's quality has declined a little bit. Some of his videos aren't even well researched and seem to be manipulated. Check some guy in UA-cam that debunked his video on the supposedly "This ship is unsinkable", I don't remember the name of the dude but he pointed major flaws in the video and explained that the World Of Warships sponsor was manipulated to make the game look better than it really is.
