Hey plant fam! I left our a very important detail in this video about growing these in clay pots. ... don't do it unless they are glazed/sealed pots. Ok that's all, keep on growin!
Definitely an important tip people should know.....its almost impossible to keep those wet or watered enough!! That also goes for anything else in the ginger family I've found out over the years......well made it through the 2 day freeze unscathed thanks to my heated greenhouse and a huge thanks to my live oaks which act like huge heat holding umbrellas.....the low temps dropped to 28-29 degrees two days in a row with highs in the low 40s.....my 15 year old angels trumpet, giant pentas and jasmines were not covered due to the wind but my trees kept them from freezing to the ground....they have no cold damage what so ever....the wind on the other hand knocked 10 tons of tillandsia out of the trees that I've gotta rake up and toss in the compost pile.....before the storm I also managed to get a double row of garden peas....3 rows of scallions.....5 rows of carrots and 5 rows of radishes ....and for decoration, wind protection and awesome fragrance I planted 5 kinds of sweet peas....4 different varieties of the tall growing types and a bedding type that stays under 2 foot tall.....ofcourse I had to put a tall fence around it because after tilling up the soil the cats had a huge gleam in their eyes thinkin I just made them the biggest cat box they ever seen lmao.... However I also gotta keep all my bird feeders full and as far away from the veggie patch as possible to keep them from eating all the hundreds of seeds I just got planted.....my biggest problem by far is leaf cutter ants....the Bain of my existence....lol...because they can and do strip every single leaf off of ANYTHING!! overnight...they ain't picky about what plant types either.....i have a 15' tall and about 8' wide oleander....the individual flowers are 3in wide... double bright pink with white stripes that look like roses...and is very VERY fragrant....well it was in full bloom and spectacular....i went to bed one night a few weeks ago...and the very next day I went outside and found that EVERY single leaf and flower was gone.... they've killed lots of of my hibiscus... Elephant ears....gardenias....pentas...jasmines.... and so called assorted indestructible plants... and they are very hard to kill or repel thus aggravating the f...k out of me LOL
Kindly help me pls. my stromanthe is losing its pink underside - what may be the cause? how can I stop it? I live in Dubai so it's very humid here going up to 80. I was thinking maybe the high moisture level in our studio is the reason for this? Need desperately your advice. Thank you.
Just recently bought a new plant. I had one outside years ago & of course SoCal’s non predictable weather & we had a cold snap & took out my plant 🥺 so here we go again 😂🎉 each leaf is like a painting & it’s just so mesmerizing to me 😊
I'm struggling with mine and your video was very helpful in sussing out the potential problems. I did not know about tap water being such an issue. Now I wished I kept a rain water bucket to collect water the last day it rained.
💌 The leaves are so pretty, there is something about a green plant that has pink on its leaves. Nice tip on what kind of pot to use. 😊 I remember when I first started houseplants I thought the type of pot was just for decoration so I hardly ever used clay pots. You live and learn.
Hey Jeff. Beautiful plant. Great care video. Love the background humidity with the witches cauldron appearence in the background with the smoke👍. Always great to see your video updates. Cheers
I live in South Florida and the Triostar is used as a landscaping plant. After watching this video, I think I'm going to pick one up the next time I'm at Lowe's. Thanks for sharing!
I know! I always am so excited when im down there and see them for sale as perennials at 1/2 the price of the ones up here. Good thing airlines only to check a couple of bags or I'd be drowning in tropicals from the nurseries down there😆 I bet some would look spectacular in your garden!
Hi Jeff! WOW, your Triostar's are beautiful! This video was very helpful because I've always wanted one, but was afraid to try it. With all of your tips, I might be successful, unless it's just one of those plants that don't like me or the environment in the house. LOL! Guess I'll just have to try one and see. My sister bought one a couple of years ago and it's been doing really good. I don't know how she takes care of it, but I think she just treats it like her other houseplants. I love the humidifier in your videos. It's so relaxing to watch. Thank you so much for sharing!
Yay! I recently bought one and this tutorial came out just in time! I can't wait to watch it grow. Mine is going in a swan planter with a wick that wicks water from my aquarium. :)
These are my favorite variegated plant too! They check all the boxes for me. :) Love watching your videos! It wasn't until I saw your Botanical Gardens video that I realized you're in Stl too! So your advice helps me even more since were in the same climate. Thanks for the wonderful content.
Thank you so much and hello neighbor! How about this weather!?😂🤣 such a mild January, im loving it and hating it at the same time. Snow makes it so much prettier here, and since I'm stuck at home would be a nice year for snow. Oh well, least we can go outside without freezing our butts off.
@@TropicalPlantParty Haha right? I can't believe I sent the kiddos out to play with a light hoodie on in mid January! I'm all for a good snow when I can enjoy it from the comfort of my house with a hot cup of coffee lol. Hopefully we'll get at least one good one before winter is over. Although I admit I'm looking forward to warmth and seeing what you do with your gorgeous yard again this year :)
It's nice to see a selection of them! And it is funny to me how many people dropped the plant bc it doesn't always look Insta perfect.... Its lovely brown tips or no!
mine got a few brown tips from fertilizer, and a few more from insufficient watering... but still a beautiful plant 🪴 Jeff, how much time do you spend in your grow room? Do you go there just to work or can you go there to relax and enjoy your plants?
Every time I see your fog covered pond, I wish you had brought the fish in, so I'd know if the ultrasonic fog makers are safe for me to add to my pond in the spring. I would think they were, at least as long as the fish can't actually touch it, since I've seen fountain setups with them, but only set up as displays without fish.
I wouldn't put one in with fish, not unless a professional told me it's ok and had done a lot of my own research about the specific one I had. The metal could be a bad one for them, and I feel like poopy water would wear the discs out, but idk for sure. Also I wouldn't do it in my set up bc I don't want to inhale vaporized fish poop, seems unhealthy 🤣😂
I’m thinking about trying to grow one in an aquarium. Do you think that I will have to keep the water heated? You have an absolutely beautiful plant there Jeff 💚🙃 Thanks Jeff. I’m going to try it again, floating in an aquarium 💚🙃
Normally I would say yes. Most plants growing aquaponically or hydroponically need the water around 77°F. These have been fine in my water here which ranges from 65 to 75°F depending on the time of year. You will get more growth out of them with warmer water though.
Wow! Where have YOU been all my life?! 🥰 seriously tho- really great content! Will subscribe. Can you give me the type of self watering container you have or suggest? Thank you!
Hi! This was so helpful. I’ve had a Trio star for years now and I don’t know how I haven’t killed it as it’s only been in the last year that I have educated myself well on plants! I have a question, I recently reported mine in a soil with good compost and what I think is good moisture retention. Having said that, I live in a very very dry climate and do my best with my humidifier but I’m wondering if it’s possible to grow these babies in a large vase of water, providing I change the water every week and give it liquid fertilizer from time to time. I’m also nervous to mess with the root system again as I just re-potted 2 months ago. THANKS!
In love with this plant!!! I was given loose leafs of it... no roots, just the leafs... it is possible to plant it and grow it? I don't know what to do but really hope i can male them into beautiful plants 🥰🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for this video! Went out and bought a self watering planter for mine. Just want to check, you said calathea also like self watering? Can I repot my calathea lancifolia in a self watering container?
Ha! Essentially that's true. Yep! Still alive and i have a few more smaller ones. They almost didn't survive the summer with other people watering for me, but I hid them so nobody could get them wet.
Hi, I have 3 of the Triostars in my garden (in the soil - not pots) in Los Angeles - it is a shaded (some morning sun) area and they doing ok BUT they are droopy. The leaves are not perky like yours. What do you suggest to perk them up?
Is this also Tri Color Ginger? I live in houston. Very hot. I want to plant in ground. It would get about 2 to 3 hrs filtered evening sun. What do you think? Spring water better than tap?
Hi! I recently got one of these from someone downsizing. It is sitting in a jar of water and has LOTS of roots. I have a new growth on it. I would like to plant it in soil but I'm terrified I will kill it because it's always lived in water. Do you have any suggestions? Also what mix percentages should I use for soil?
Can one grow stromanthe triostar straight from the flower seed? My flower is starting to quit the bloom and I was wondering Ig I could collect the seeds and plant them :3
My arrowroots plants sir after I repot it in the soil. The leaves curled then getting died.. even I gave enough water how to revive it. Everyday leaves dieing
Depends on the size/age. Generally I'll repot them whenever i notice that im having to water more often and the roots have filled the pots entirely. When they are more mature, say over 2 or 3ft tall, ill let them stay pot bound longer. When I've grown Washingtonian I typically upgraded their pot size almost every year, which is more frequent than most palms need, but they grow a lot faster than most other palms.

literally perfect timing on this video. i have killed one and have another struggling and on a whim bought a giant variegated one today

The plant is beautiful, and I miss the pets, I like to see them in the intro
Sorry about that! I generally only get video from in the house for the weekend vlogs. There will be pets this weekend 😊
Very helpful video. My Stromanthe is struggling but I am sure your video will help her to thrive. Many thanks as always! Take care and stay safe.
Hey there, Peggy! Thank you! Hope you are doing well!
Hey Jeff! Great video as always! Cheers 👍😁🇨🇦🌴
Thank you!
Great timing for this video for me. I just bought one of these. Thanks Jeff. So far so good but it has only been here a week. They sure are pretty.
Yay for new plants! Im so happy you got one, they are so lovely and fun to grow!
@@TropicalPlantParty I sure hope so.

Hey Sunny! Great idea! The wicking cords are so helpful with them and I bet it will love your aquarium water!
Thanks for the video! I haven't had good luck with this plant, but now you've given me some ideas.

Beautifully done Jeff, thank you very much.

Oh my gosh.. this is so very informative and helpful. I now know at least3 things I need to change. Triostar is one of my favorites! Thankyou!
Thank you, Cheryl! Arent they so fun and pretty!?
Nature is wonderful, so beautiful.
Just purchased one today. These grow outside under trees here in North Florida.
mine got a few brown tips from fertilizer, and a few more from insufficient watering... but still a beautiful plant 🪴
Jeff, how much time do you spend in your grow room? Do you go there just to work or can you go there to relax and enjoy your plants?
Seems like almost any little thing can brown those tips up. Oh the grow space is for business and pleasure, love to hang out in there with the plants.
If it belongs to the Calathea family brown tips could come from watering with tap water!
True! Thank you!
I water with aquarium water…

Hi, Jeff, I love the triostar stromanthe plant but can't maintain the plant. I've tried several times. 🌱
Hey Cynthia! Happy Saturday!
Hi I sell these sometimes , I stand mine in a tray , keep wet and stand in water on summer
This reminds me of the burro tail care video but the exact opposite instructions 🤔 . Speaking of the burro tail, still alive?

Is it okay to use a drip feeder with the Stromanthe ? I'm using babybio...
Cotton will degrade look for a polyester cord or yarn, also soak it before use.

Where do you get a mister like that?

YAY I'm the 100th like ;)
😆🤣 thank you!
When do yo repot your washingtonia? because you know a lot about repotting.

With greenhouse high humidity and filtered light in a greenhouse, this plant would do great. Just copy a greenhouse.
What percentage should I maintain with a humidifier?
70 percent
Hi Jeff 🌴🌴🌴
Lol! Hello!
Are thre stromanthe in a sealed water pot, not sitting in water please.
