I once purchased this Bowl Basics DVD from Mike. I learned more from it than any other woodturning DVD I ever watch. It is really awesome that Mike has now posted all of the DVD he use to sell to UA-cam for all to watch for free. That is a very gracious gift to the wood turning community that this master professional turner shares his years of knowledge and experience at no cost to us students.
Thank you for releasing these videos to the world! I took the time to core 15 bowls today and will do more pending how these dry.

I can't get into my mind’s eye how going in one direction on the outside of the bowl (smaller to larger) will keep you from hitting end-grain but going the wrong direction (larger to smaller) you will. It’s little factoids like this that sink in for me when I can visualize or understand the principal for, for some reason, I am having a mental block on this. It would seem that either direction you are going to hit the same grain. My confusion aside, I love watching your videos!
BTW, being left-handed, do you primarily turn lefty or ambidextrous? I ask because I am a southpaw and trying to figure out if I will need to learn to turn right-handed.
Mike, thank you for letting us watch your videos and thereby learn more about the craft we love. I have taken Stuart's course and want take one from you someday. Most of my tools are Sorby and I have a lot of them. Your tool handles look longer than mine. Question is it worth the time, effort and money to turn and replace those on the most used tools?

9,000 rpm???
That's 900 rpm
The diameter of the blank, in inches, (in his case is 9") multiplied by the RPM you want to run the lathe; should equal around 6,000 to 9,000.
If it is over 9,000 slow it down. If it is below 6,000 you should speed it up.
This is assuming your blank is balanced when turning. A Way out of balance blank may require you to run the lathe at 100 to 300 RPM so it doesn't bounce all over the place.
