Franz Wilhelm Ferling - Étude No. 3 for basset horn

- The 48 Ferling études were originally written for oboe. Mark Wolbers adapted and released them in 2020 for basset horn (or any clarinet to low C).
The études have been arranged to account for the instrument's large range of over three octaves and are published by Gérard Billaudot.
My instrument is a Leblanc large bore basset horn with extensive upgrades to the keywork by Jochen Seggelke (Seggelke Klarinetten, Bamberg) and Martin Suter (Das Blashaus, Lucerne).
The gold adjustable neck was created on my request at Das Blashaus.
I play Vandoren reeds (V21), mouthpieces (BD5) and Rovner (Dark) ligatures.
Fantastic! Great playing! I love how this instrument has clear access to high soprano notes and access to rich low bass notes at the same time.
Beautiful stuff, amazing tone. What a wonderful instrument. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Russell!
Great tone, very expressive, thanks for this video.
Hi Hugues, thank you very much. You’re welcome!
I happen to be at Das Blashaus in Lucerne just days ago following up for some mods he made for my Selmer Privilege bass last summer(mainly the throat Bb mechanism and a reshaped register key), and I didn't get to ask Martin if he make necks for alto & BH(purely out of curiousity), but seems like you've answered my question on his behalf 😉 And of course, great playing as always!
Yes but they’re not part of the standard assortment, yet. In part because there are at least 3 bore widths of basset horns in use and so it’d probably be a made on order situation. And I suppose the demand would be less than bass clarinets, for now.
@@RichardElliotHaynes.clarinet 3 BH bores- that is if you consider the current Buffet as the same as the German BH(I for one do). Yep. I know it isn't something Martin would openly offer for obvious reasons, but I've never thought he'd even be keen to make a custom one!
Selmer 15, Buffet 17, Leblanc 18 and I generally don't include Oehler system clarinets in my musings here. There might very well be some other widths around. Stephen Fox makes a basset horn but I'm not aware of the dimensions. Doesn't hurt to ask outstanding people like Martin to take on projects with uncertain outcomes, that's how discoveries are made.
@@RichardElliotHaynes.clarinet Steve Fox offers 3 bores actually- the 15.5(similar to the Selmer), a unique medium small around 16, and medium 17(as with Buffet & Oehler BHs, also Selmer & Yamaha altos). Add the Leblanc BH bore and you get 4 bore sizes!
I tend to include Oehler(and Reform-Boehm) alto, BH & bass(the last of which I have actually played some years ago) along with the Boehm ones as I have a keen interest for these members of the clarinet family on both systems.
Thanks for this information! If only there'd be less of a geographical, philosophical and musical boundary between the main two systems of clarinets…
Isn't this a Rose etude?
They are similar: Rose used the 40 Ferling etudes, originally for oboe, as a basis for his 32 etudes for clarinet. A lot of the melodic lines are the same.
@@RichardElliotHaynes.clarinet Oh yeah!!! I completely forgot about that XD
Широкая мензура не идет бассетгорнам.
I’d be interested to know why you think that. There are basset horns in at least 3 bore widths: 15, 17 and 18mm.
@@RichardElliotHaynes.clarinet I love the sound of narrow bore bassethorns. Simple. BTW, I played that LeBlanc model.
Then why did you write that the wide bore does not "suit" the basset horn, if the fact of the matter is, that you enjoy playing small bore instruments? Why phrase something as a fact, when it's just your opinion?
@@RichardElliotHaynes.clarinet Нюансы потеряны при машинном переводе. Я люблю альтовые кларнеты. :) Даже в строе фа. :)
That indeed appears to be the case.
