Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto,” is the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The all-new original film features the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” says Beatriz. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right-something I love and relate to very much.”

The treatment of generational trauma in this film and the many complex ways it impacts the next generation was phenomenal. I’m a psychotherapist and have worked with Refugees and those who have experienced forced migration. Their children and grandchildren carry the trauma in the weight of expectations and constant awareness of all those loses. Beautiful film and beautiful music; this song in particular.

this is like the residential schools here in Canada, many Indigenous/First Nations children would be taken to these schools where they were forced to switch their language, they were abused, they also were given barely any food I think, many escaped, some tried and ended up dying. Recently, over 100 corpses were founded in one school. Residential schools caused something called generational trauma (as you stated in this comment). It was not only in Canada though, it was in the US. They used it to have more land for the US. Canada has forgiven the First Nations for their wrong doings and once every year we have orange shirt day, we wear an orange shirt because a girl was bullied for wearing an orange shirt when in a residential school. (I’m not part of First Nations) Some First Nations people speak fondly of the schools.

And it's not how its conventionally made. There's a lot of movies that put Colombia as a place where theres only violence and mobsters, when it's not true. I like this moment bc while they do acknowledge there's violence, it's not the only part of Colombia, and also shows pretty moments like Dia de las velitas.

When Abuela first narrates this, it seems like Pedro was taken captive and killed out of sight, as he just fades away and Alma's expression is hopeless. Also, the mountains in the Encanto formed along with the Casita after his death.
However, this scene reveals a lot of things:
    1) Pedro was killed right in front of Abuela, and her expression is pure horror, heartbreak and grief.
    2) There is a shot of the refugees looking towards Abuela. This means that Abuela not only had to look after her babies, but she now had to lead a large group of refugees looking to her for guidance.
    3) The oldest Abuela could be is at least 25 (my personal guess is 21). So at a young age, Abuela had a ton of responsibilty and pressure that she alone had to bear. She had to oversee the construction of an entire village, transform a hostile landscape to a safe haven, and (for the first few years) find a way to provide for a village full of homeless people in a jungle that has no farm land.
In addition, in the beginning, all the people had a fear of being found and massacred in a wild landscape, with only the Casita as shelter. This goes to show how much sacrifice Abuela had to endure.

Something I read and I actually think a lot now is the shawl that abuela carries is her grief. You can see that she has it on during the whole movie and even in this song after she looks at her babies she puts it on and She goes trough the door and you see Bruno, Isa and Luisa straightening up and trying to look perfect. After she talks with Mirabel she no longer has it.

This gives us a perfect view of how Abuela became the woman she is : a woman who just wants what's best for her and her family, but does so through bad means. This scene is so important to me because it relates so much to real life. Like, Abuela wasn't the villain, she just had incredibly high expectations of her children and grandchildren. And isn't that what immigrant parents are like? They go through so much to have a better life for them and their children and so they want all of their struggles to be worth it. They feel they (or their children) have to earn that miracle. They think, "Look, my child is so successful, they're a doctor/businessman/engineer/lawyer, they did so much better here in this new place than they would've back where I came from." But what if their children don't want any of that? Then there's disappointment, there's burnout, and it sucks for everyone all around. And the more I think about this movie the more I realize how brilliantly they executed that idea. The short film that played before Encanto had a similar lesson also. I love what they did with the whole "I understand why you made the parenting decisions you did, but they're not good decisions for your child."

I'm just kind of tired of the, "oh, everything is pretty much perfect! It's so happy and lively~ the heroin just needs to get the man, or outwits a bad guy who plans horrible things but never actually gets to do much", you know?
They're kinda mixing both areas of it and it makes it something I can connect to better

The fact that Abuela's memory toned down her reaction of Pedro's death when you compare the opening scene to this one.
I think she tried to push away the devastating emotions whenever she would tell her grandkids the story. Focusing on the miracle and lingering away from how distraught she was by just imagining herself bending over sadly. But here, in the river, she was forced to remember _everything_

@jf k yes. that case is very familiar to all of us.
Alma had a hard life, but remember what Bruno went through too.
I love Abuela as a character, and how real she is. We can relate to that.
If you ask, if they're willing, you'll find that it's the same case with our parents. Like example, due to being neglected as a kid, my parent had internal trouble that affected their kids greatly due to most of us being their verbal outlet (not abuse, but yah know, the life complaints). They were a good parent that provided us with all our needs, but problems still arose.
Alma wanting perfection to maintain and keep their home, and she did a great job of it. She managed to raise her triplets well, probably did a few work herself because the Casita cannot provide them food ofc. She did all that, and kept her family safe.
But even then, there was still damage done.

    • @jessiedraco8727
      @jessiedraco8727 2 роки тому +5

@jf k exactly what I love about this movie. It reflects very much on real life.
We all have family problems. And there are instances that you're sure could have fixed some issues if all had just...
      yeah.
But because it's already been done the only two outcomes would be the family grow stronger together or completely fall apart.
It's good thing the Madrigal family had the former. Bruno was gone for 10 years, that alone created enough tension within the family that they each forcefully tried to forget, in their own way. Regrets, the Blame-Game, Guilt...
Keep in mind, before Mirabel forced Alma to confront her problems by telling her off, Abuela convinced herself that every thing going wrong was because of Mirabel.
Like I said, I do not hate Abuela Alma. These are just merely observations of her character and relationship with her family. And that's what make it better, because it's complex. With all the sacrifices she had made that we all commend her for, we still couldn't just ignore the fact that she put so much pressure on certain individuals to the point some were internally damaged, specifically Pepa and Bruno.
Alma did not directly hurt them, but she played a part.

But those who do understand get a whole tale that can personally speak to them. And it's a beautiful story that does so well blending what we're seeing, from a miracle to a tragedy and then back to a miracle. this song definitely struck a cord with me because it made me understand a lot of parts of myself. my family are refugees from sudan, and we were lucky enough to come to the US. my parents were really tough on us, but i always remind myself that everything they did was to preserve our future. they sacrificed a lot for their family because that’s what matters most. they experienced trauma from the war in sudan, and experienced a lot of pressure to take care of 6 children when they had nothing. they worked extremely hard, but they also put a ton of pressure on us to succeed and basically be perfect, even if they had to physically and mentally abuse us into it. i’m really glad that this movie touches on a lot of aspects such as trauma from violent events around the world and how it affects people from a large and personal way. but it also shows the way poc have culturally have a sense of community.

It tells the story of a family that begun amidst the armed conflict in the country in the last decades in a way that no other production has done before, not even the Colombian ones. Almost all of the successful productions about Colombia have centered around the war on drugs and the druglors culture that has affected us negatively throughout history.
Encanto respectfully acknowledges Colombian history while honoring the people, the culture and the beauty that our country has at its core. One of the things I love most about this scene is how it parallels the opening scene with the explanation of where the Madrigal miracle came from. The beginning scene made it seem calmer, more composed and less tragic. Yes, Abuela's husband is killed still, but her face is saddened and she's not really shown crying. She's shown to be firm and strong despite the circumstances. Yet, when this scene hits, we see the real devastation that Abuela went through in order to make her who she is. She witnessed her husband being struck down in front of her very eyes and she collapses, screaming and crying and reaching out for him. She's not composed. She loses it and breaks down emotionally. On top of that, we see her in her room grappling with the trauma of what just happened to her. It's such a beautiful way of pulling the curtain back on a story passed down from one generation to another and showing us that there is a reality that is hidden from us, especially us immigrants. Our families tell us these amazing stories and yet it is hard to put ourselves in their shoes truly because they faced things we don't know about. We only know the story that is told and what is contained in that. We may never know the horrors that truly surrounded their situation that leaves them scarred, traumatized and feeling the way Abuela feels in this movie.

My great grandfather was close to losing his life in this violent period (early 1900s) . For the curious ones, this was a conflict between two political parties, the liberals and the conservatives. He was a conservative pharmacist but he also worked as adoctor, the only doctor in a liberal town. He loved to help so he did not charge the poor, and the town loved him. When the conflict turned violent the townspeople protected our family. We were lucky, but in other towns the story was quite different, and had to leave their homes. It is the same conflict that left Saint Laura Montoya fatherless. The displaced is a reality that has been in Colombia ever since, the conflicts that cause them have changed, drug wars, politics, guerrillas, but the results stay the same. This is relevant because so many people still suffer, so I applaud for Disney to acknowledging this part of Colombia’s history, the world needs to know.

my great grandparents migrated from poland when my grandmother was only a baby in the 1950s, after the country had been under nazi control for so many years. my grandma and her sister were extremely poor and seeing abuela having to build her life at such a young age made me cry so much harder than my friends when we watched it together. i didn’t understand why until i watched this scene again. when my grandmother speaks polish i can tell that she’s grieving her home. she’s still close with her sister after all these years, and it’s because of how hard they had to work to have the life they wanted. i feel eternally grateful of my grandparents and great grandparents. they built my life for me before i was even born under the weight of poverty and trauma, and i’ll never forget it.

Unless you yourself know the history of Latin America extensively, you would know that the US has done everything in its power to maintain super power status by putting us down & taken our resources without so much paying. While the US claims crime is coming in. The fact of the matter is, immigrants are escaping poverty and crime. Crime is not entering the US. Quite the opposite, it’s coming OUT into Latin America. Who supplies the militia? Co-ops? Spies? The only nation that manufactures guns & destroys other nation’s prosperity for their own gain? The USA. They can’t even BOTHER releasing Puerto Rico. Mirabel put into motion a series of events that moved the literal mountains around the Encanto, which were also a metaphor for Abuela not confronting her past trauma. If you notice there is a pause after abuela says “this river is where we were….” - she hesitates and then says “given our miracle”. She didn’t wanna say “attacked”. The mountains around the Encanto are a metaphorical response to the trauma of Alma seeing Pedro getting murdered, and after 50 years of not seeing that river, her first instinct upon seeing it is to default to her usual “we were given a miracle” schpiel instead of acknowledging her own suffering. The Encanto valley is Alma’s narcissistic fantasy where it’s 1900 every day and everyone has to play their role to keep up the facade, even as the world outside the Encanto changes. Now that there’s an easy pathway in, the Encanto is once again part of the greater world. During the credits, one can see Mirabel and Alma placing floating tea candles on the river, showing how Abuela has moved on into the acceptance stage of grief, after spending half a century in denial.

This scene made me cry so much, as a Colombian, even though I haven't suffered the conflict directly, I started to think about how we grow up seeing the violence in the news everyday, feeling powerless to do something to help our people and with fear that things will get worse. The forced displacement that abuela suffered, was probably during "La Violencia" in the XX century. Sadly, the conflict only got worse after that. Still, I'm so happy about this movie, it makes me feel proud of my people because it portrays how even if we live with fear, our paradise it's so beautiful that you can't help but love Colombia. Also, for non Colombians, the village of the story is like a mix of Colombia's culture in one place, we're so different so it was kinda weird but nice to see that. I think the movie implicitly explains why there are elements from the different regions, I think it's because all of those people suffered the same as abuela, and the conflict has affected every region in Colombia. The people in that village had the luck to find that miracle after what they went through. If someone reads this and is confusing, sorry for the broken english :P

Alma was left with nothing after Pedro's death, she was only there hoping for something, a miracle something that will keep her going. Her coping mechanism broke her family when her plan was to fix it, she was stuck in the past trying to make things perfect for the present that she didn't realize the future was already being torn for both sides (Her and Mirabel) because of it. She needed to stop, she needed to let Pedro and her pain go because if he was here he would've never asked for anything beyond what was already there.

The miracle wasn’t given to them because of worthiness, rather it was born as a gift because of pedros never ending love and his sacrifice for his wife and children’s safety. The notion “we have to prove our worthiness through our gifts” got to Abeulas head, something that the casita must’ve noticed with the last child that got their gift before Mirabel, it must’ve noticed how much perfection pressure she was putting on the kids rather than being there for them when they needed it; the miracle must’ve seen what was going to happen aka given the vision to Bruno and it needed someone who was understanding, compassionate and was able to look at things with the “outside of the box” way. The whole house is Mirabel’s magic and possibly she may be the one to take care of the candle when abuela passes away.
