The Dark Side of Pablo Picasso

  • Although Picasso never visited Africa, his interest in its art is well documented, from his discovery of African masks at a museum Paris in June 1907. He became an avid collector of African art. Here’s the interesting twist. It is public information and well documented that in 1920, Pablo Picasso said of African art, "L'art nègre? Connais pas." This translates in English to "African art? Never heard of it!" This was a bold denial, not only of African influence but of the very existence of African art.
This was very ironic for a man who was later found with a collection of African art. Some analysts say that regardless of what you think of Pablo Picasso, whether you like his art or not, it's hard to deny that he is perhaps one of the most influential, most prolific and most important artists of the past 100 years.

Whenever African artifacts are stolen or repurposed by Europeans (evidence abounds for this in history), here comes controversy. Given the Moorish and African roots of some Europeans, their African souls tend to reveal themselves in peculiar ways. Picasso is obviously no exception.

True @Gina.. Far from being considered artworks, African artforms were considered artifacts of colonial conquests and held little to no economic value. I believe this is where the term primitivism came from. But during the early 1900s with Picasso leading the way, African art aesthetics became a source of profound inspiration for the School of Paris, which had been searching for new and radical ways of representation.

Those european structures and buildings were actually build by the Moors who were Black.
They were the ones who civilised white people who were going through black plaque.
The Moors even taught white people how to have a bath with soap. Even tried to teach them how to be a decent people and how to be civilised.
Many inventions were stolen from Foundation Black Americans during slavery.
This is why it's important to know who we really are.
One of my favourite quotes is ,"Knowing my REAL HISTORY is knowing MY TRUE SELF and taking TRUE POWER".
History is written by the victors of war. It's the reason why european colonisers were able to capture the minds of many Africans. They destroyed anything that they can, stole some, hid some and rewrote some in order to disconnect us from our ancestors.
Many people have no idea why so many are brainwashed and conditioned by man-made religions like christianity.
ALL the stories in the bible are Black history mixed with lies, spells and hidden spells. Our enemies know who we are so much better than ourselves.
It's the reason why they are always in our business. As they are scared of many Black people learning the truth of who we are. But, it's inevitable so the Black people who are still asleep better start reconnecting with our ancestors and roots. An open mind, complete mindset change and be willing to unlearn the lies and relearn the truth. Each person needs to make a choice to make either to prepare as we are at war.

This is unbelievable. Am a Kenyan artist both in painting and sculpture. I've never accepted Picasso as anywhere close to a great artist as they portray him n very happy that it's now confirmed. Any painter who cannot do realism like a commissioned portrait is just but a fraud. They hide under abstracts in which it's difficult in the real sense to draw a line between a professional and an amateur. He doesn't even have the flow of colours in his pieces. How could they equate him to genius Da vinci.? This is basically an insult to art geniuses like Michael Angelo. Thanks for this eye opening video.

being influeneed by other art forms is what we do, there is a difference between being influenced and inspired to show, create a bvring something new to the table, or reveal old art in a new light thus opening a door for others to see what is out there and venture forth on a new road of artistic discovery. There are those who steal or plagiarize others works and I know one I can mention today who says he does just that... I won't though. Also the time period.. during Picassos days, ALL the artists were venturing out of the old Atelier style of learning.. by the 20th century, all the artists were trying and being influenced by ALL forms of art old and new... Picasso just showed the world what it had been missing and opened the door so others could see and venture there... Today many artists do steal or plagiarize others work... yet most are simply copying art styles because its easier to copy than have the courage to really go down the rabbit hole and create... Cubism is a reflection of Monet. His work went to cubism long before Picasso did it.. influenced, inspired.. its what we do.. I am not a big fan of Picasso, however I can say this.. he didnt have to steal a damn thing from anyone!!!

They didn't care about their ritual uses, they knew nothing about their original tribal meanings, or about the societies out of which they came. They simply used them formally, and in that way, cubism was like a small parody of the imperial model. The masks were simply raw material from the darkest Congo, like copper or palm oil, and Picasso's use of them was in effect, a kind of cultural plunder."

Picasso is vastly overrated and I believe that he was a shrewd and astute con man. There is a lot of evidence that the his first paintings, which were very fine, were actually done by his father and Picasso simply pretended that they were his. If this is true then it destroys the widely accepted idea that Picasso was able to paint very finely (as shown in his very early paintings) but chose not to. If we accept the idea that Picasso never painted his early paintings, then we are left with the reality that Picasso was only able to paint rough paintings throughout his life.

I understand the charge of plagiarism in visual arts is one fraught with challenges. Does the artist who sits down to make a painting of the Notre Dame commit plagiarism, by robbing the idea of the original architect? However, throughout his career Picasso copied from other people's ideas, as acknowledged by experts such as John Berger, the influential British art critic. He stole from Vincent van Gogh and Jean Ingres, Poussin and his fellow Cubists, to the extent that their work was often indistinguishable.

Life magazine did one of their holiday double issues (Christmas /New Years) on Piccaso, around 1962-3 I think.
There were several photos of Piccaso with different pieces of his African art, masks and sculpture. The interview had several mentions of the art, it's influence upon him and how he was attracted to the primal nature of its beauty.
Of course you are talking about a time when African American entertainers and musicians like Josie Brown among others were migrating to Paris where they and their art was celebrated not segregated.
So to claim that Picasso was a racist thief is (I'll say) less than accurate.

first of all,art is not national or continental. it is UNIVERSAL.
second, any artist can be inspired by anything and that does not mean steal.
according to your analogy ,will you blame an artist who express feelings and make contemporary art?
probably your answer will be: artist steals or copies feelings of himself 😂😂😂
it is true that in 19 and 20 century not only africa but other continents values or culture are stolen. plus perhaps the worst one was slavery. people from africa were victims of slavery.
but in 21. century instead of complaining about these facts and blaming the people from their past, you can or you guys can work for not to repeat these things again. otherwise this analogy is meaningless and childish.
personally, i dont see any difference from old times. africa no development nor peace.
it is same chaotic and poor continent.
and picasso was a real deal. instead of your video than man was working with two dimension converting it to the three dimension.
plus he is also inspired by cezanne. picasso also
admits. but you will get that he stole cezannes technique 😂😂😂
    oh boyy

He culturally appropriated from many, was misogynistic and demeaning to women, he had a manical ego and a flare for the dramatic. Truly no one I want anything to do with. I never liked his art and yet I adore African art. African art has soul and life. Picasso's work is lifeless imitation.

Agreed. However, Picasso refused to give credit where it was due. In fact, far from being considered artworks, African pieces of art were considered artifacts of colonial conquests and held little to no economic value. I believe they called it primitivism. But during the early 1900s with Picasso leading the way, African art aesthetics became a source of profound inspiration for the School of Paris, which had been searching for new and radical ways of representation.

It would be nice to see more substantial sources. You intended to portray Picasso as a hypocrite when he said “black art? never heard of it.”, but what’s the context? Why did he say this when he own African art, it doesn’t make sense and I would have loved context to explain this inconsistency. Also it’s not like taking inspiration is a heinous crime, what’s so bad about Picasso taking inspiration from an art style he admired? Are we going to shame the renaissance for “stealing the culture and artistic traditions of Greeks”?That would be ridiculous. Picasso didn’t steal, he innovated; He showed Europe something new with his talent and creativity to think outside the box. And it also would be nice to see a time line of his works compared to African works. Did he start to change his style after seeing african art? or was he already experimenting with surrealism when he saw african art and got new inspiration for his emerging style. Honestly, this is just lazy journalism

Yes, it does! Today, europeans have thousands of Afrikan artifacts in their museums and still spread the lie that Afrika had no civilization, etc. , and that Afrikans do not know how to take care of their artworks and artifacts. They know the ancient Kmtyw were Afrikans, but yet they still claim they were not Afrikans! Many of the tombs were blasted by europeans, robbed and plundered, yet Afruka never produced any culture, math, science! So, yes it makes plenty of sense, PP was one of many europeans that copied Afrikans and yet denied that Afrika was their teacher!

What’s so bad about all of this when you colonisé a continent, steal its children away into slavery, treat them like dirt, create social cast and put them at the bottom of it, put them into zoos, and do atrocities against them. Then, turn your attention to the motherland and stole its resources at the same time looking down on said people. All of these pieces that Picasso took inspo from were not acquired in fair or legal manners. On top of that it’s years and years of stealing from said people and give them no credits. I don’t know if you have ever heard of cultural appropriation but it’s that. When a dominant culture steal from a marginalized group. There’s a difference between appreciation and appropriation and it’s this case it’s straight up theft

    • @heliophiliab3400
      @heliophiliab3400 2 роки тому

@@JP-br4mx Ok, first off, Picasso never colonized a continent, and he never stole children into slavery. In fact, almost no one did since children don’t make good slaves. Tangent, but slaves weren’t stolen by Europeans from Africa, they were captured by African nations as prisoners of war from other African nations. At least that was for the most part, the story did start to shift once Europeans switched their focus from America to Africa, but by the time that was happening slavery was largely illegal in much of Europe (In fact France was one of the first in modern history to outlaw slavery). Also, it’s rather childish to say that because Africa had been colonized then no one is allowed to appreciate its culture. Honestly your “holier than thou” rhetoric is downright exhausting. Can’t you just appreciate good art without trying to dismantle someone’s life’s work? How pathetic
